Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

ST. RAPHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCHROCKVILLE, MARYLAND February 23, 2020

St. Raphael’s is highlighting a

“Ministry of the Week” We hope that you will find this a helpful tool

Clothing Drive St. Raphael parishioners are called to participate in the Corporal Work of Mercy in donating clothes for those in need. There are three collections scheduled between September and June of an academic year. In the fall, usually completed in September, we ask for clothing items that are between the seasons of summer and fall. In November, we collect warmer clothing and winter coats. This collection is held during the first three weeks of November ending on the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day. In May, we collect items of the transition from spring into summer. Watch the bulletin for notices of clothing drives.

Clothing volunteers meet the Monday after the Clothing Drive to sort and pack-up the items for the beneficiary organizations. We ask that all parishioners remember to whom the clothing will be delivered and uphold their dignity by donating gently used and laundered pieces. The beneficiaries include: Interfaith Clothing Center, Birthright, Sheppard’s Table and S.O.M.E. (So Others May Eat). Due to space limitations in the parish, the drop-off of clothing before or after the actual weekend date is discouraged unless special arrangements have been made.

Coordinated by Eileen Cheng, if you wish to join her efforts with other volunteers, contact Eileen at MsEBChen aol.com or call her at (301) 762-6340. Donation slips for income tax purposes are available to parishioners upon request.

Vincentian reflection: In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us by saying: “You must be perfected as your heavenly Father is perfect.” In what ways is the work completed by our SVdP Conference? We work with our clients with the goal of positively affecting their current problem as

well as their involvement in the solution to their problem. Vincentians can spend a good amount of time with their clients, and the assistance they receive can make a remarkable difference in their lives. During the time spent with them, Vincentians work to empower the client to make good choices in their financial lives, which helps to raise themselves out of poverty in a way that uplifts their human dignity. It is a work of faith. In doing this work, one can find the perfection in ourselves as God’s servants and as Jesus commanded.

Ash Wednesday is this week! Please take a Rice Bowl after Mass today, located at all the exits. During the 40 Days of Lent, the lives on Maria Ana, Trinh, and Yvone can serve as point for reflection for your own experience with prayers, fasting and almsgiving. To read their bios, visit https://www.crsbowl.org/stories-of-hope and watch the video. This is a great family activity that can lead to fruitful conversation if completed weekly. Rice Bowls are due back on Holy Thursday, April 9. Please write a check of the amount donated to St. Raphael Catholic Church and mark 2020 Rice Bowl on the memo line.

We need volunteers to help homeless women during Lent: Please help us help the homeless that occupy the Rockville Interfaith Shelter. We need your help and generosity to provide meals and donations during March 8-14th. If you are interested in providing a meal please contact Ed Staunton for details 301-943-0509 or [email protected] . A wish list for items needed is on page 5 and on the parish website. All toiletries donated can be dropped off in the school lobby box marked "SHELTER DONATIONS”. Note: SSL's are available.

Each one has a pre-drafted email that can be personalized as well as a phone script; (4) Social media posts on each issue that can be shared on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram; (5) A draft email you can share with family and friends to encourage them to speak up about the issues and get involved; (6) Some FAQs for folks who have questions.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Religious Education Calendar SRRE classes resume this week. Our next break will be April 4-15 (Holy Week and Easter Week). Find the complete calendar at https://www.straphaels.org/religious-education (scroll down) or contact the SRRE office for a print version. The SRRE Parent Handbook is available on the sidebar at www.straphaels.org/religious-education.

Confirmation Student Reminders Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth.

Confirmation I students (those in grade 7 or high school preparing for Confirmation in 2021) are working on their Confirmation Service Projects. The focus of these projects is the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Anyone who missed the Confirmation Enrollment Rite (Nov. 24) should pray the rite at home with their family (find rite on the SRRE webpage sidebar), then come in to our office to pick up a copy of 57 Saints.

Each Confirmation II student will participate in an individual Confirmation interview during March. The Required Learning for Interview packet is available in your packet, in the SRRE office, or at www.straphaels.org/confirmation-1. Those who were not able to attend the Confirmation Student and Parent Meeting last week should contact our office to sign up for a Confirmation Mass time and to receive information to give to your sponsor.

First Eucharist Reminders This week families are completing chapter two of God's Gift Eucharist (for grades 2, 3, and 4) or chapter three of We Give Thanks and Praise packets (grades 5, 6, and 7).

Our Family Retreat Day will be Saturday, March 7. This day is for all families with children(grades 2-7) preparing for First Eucharist this spring. The day includes banner making (9:30-

10:20 AM), workshops, and the Signation Rite (1:00 PM). We are still in need of parent volunteers to lead various parts of the day. If you have any questions, please contact the SRRE office. Those who missed the Caring Rite should have received an envelope with the rite and a prayer partner. Remember to pray for the candidate on your prayer heart!

Preparation for Sacraments The St. Raphael Religious Education (SRRE) office oversees and coordinates sacrament preparation for all children ages 7-18. This includes Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and Eucharist. Please contact Mary Beaudoin for information. If your child attends a Catholic school (other than SRS) and is in grade 2, 7 or 8, please complete the electronic registration form at www.straphaels.org/religious-education-registration.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word – Leaders and Assistants Needed

Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLW) is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word with readings in language that children can readily understand. Leaders share the Gospel in a way that is developmentally-appropriate for children. CLW is part of the 10:00 Sunday Mass mid-September through

May. We are currently in need of more leaders and assistants. Training and great resources are provided. Please contact Mary Beaudoin for details.

Christ Is Alive

Pope Francis wrote his Apostolic Exhortation Chistus Vivit (Christ Is Alive) to young people and the entire people of God. Below are two sections from “Jesus’ youth.”

28. In his adolescence and youth, Jesus’relationship with the Father was that of the beloved Son. Drawn to the Father, he grew up concerned for his affairs: “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” (Lk 2:49). Still, it must not be thought that Jesus was a withdrawn adolescent or a self-absorbed youth. His relationships were those of a young person who shared fully in the life of his family and his people. He learned his father’s trade and then replaced him as a carpenter. At one point in the Gospel he is called “the carpenter’s son” (Mt 13:55) and another time simply “the carpenter” (Mk 6:3). This detail shows that he was just another young person of his town, who related normally to others. No one regarded him as unusual or set apart from others. For this very reason, once Jesus began to preach, people could not imagine where he got this wisdom: “Is this not Joseph’s son?” (Lk 4:22).

During a prayer of Adoration we express our awareness, understanding, and love of God as our Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. We can use our own words or no words at all. St Therese explained it as a “surge of the heart”. We can also read and reflect on Catholic Prayers, Scripture, or the Liturgy of the Hours. All of these can be read from your phone. (See links below.) Of course God does not need our Adoration. God knows who God is; we sometimes forget. Therefore, God reflects back to us the prayer we offer and we become more aware that we have an awesome God. We become stronger and more ready to live a joyful Christian life. For more background on this liturgy, please see: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/adoration/devotions-and-eucharistic-adoration.cfm

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a time to publically show honor and love to Christ our Lord and King by your presence and personal prayer. You are encouraged to commit to a specific time slot of 30 minutes or 1 hour one Thursday per month. Do this by signing up on the chart at the desk in the Narthex. For more information, please contact Richard Meyer at [email protected].

“For me prayer is a surge of the heart, it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy.”

- St Therese

Q What kinds of prayers are said during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament?

A: “Adoration” is one of the four “ends” or goals of prayer. It is not the same as the other three: Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication. It is more focused on God
