Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating they are parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations. In a community as large as St. Raphael, one means of verifying participation is through the regular use of parish offertory envelopes. Divine Mercy

Roman Catholic news agencies write that the late Pope John Paul II realized the greatness of Sr. Mary Faustina from his earliest days. Sister Faustina died in 1938, at the early age of 33 in Krakow, Poland. As a young man in the same city, Karol Wojtyla would visit the sanctuary dedicated to her after her death. The nuns of Sr. Faustina’s

convent were seeking to have her recognized. The words in her diary document her conversations with Jesus over seven years. (Her confessor asked her to document these conversations). As written they were detailed and long, and not those of an educated writer (Sr. Faustina only had a third grade education). Her diary was consequently suppressed by the Vatican. In the 1960s Cardinal Wojtyla, then the Archbishop of Krakow, worked with the vice-postulator for Faustina’s cause to re-translate Sr. Faustina’s diary into something more acceptable. The ban on Faustina’s diary was lifted in 1978, six months before the election of Cardinal Wojtyla as Pope. This is an example of the words of Christ to St. Faustina - "My dearest secretary, write that I want to pour out My divine life into human souls and to sanctify them, if only they were willing to accept My grace. The greatest sinners would achieve sanctity, if only they would trust in MY mercy". The second encyclical of Pope John Paul’s pontificate was dedicated to the Divine Mercy theme, Dives in Misericordia (Rich in Mercy). Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated at St. Raphael on April 28 the 1st Sunday following Easter. Expect special graces. You are invited to participate and become part of this celebration. Questions or to help: Contact Dick Jasinski 301-983-1445

Second Collection This weekend, March 16-17, the second collection is for The Church in the Developing World. The collection for The Church in the Developing World is directed toward the Church in Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Africa. The Church in these parts of the world experiences considerable challenges and great needs, while the faithful in these areas are often limited in what they can contribute. This collection supports such areas of ministry as evangelization, the education of clergy and laity, youth ministry, catechesis, social service programs, and church construction and renovation. Please be generous according to your ability. It allows us to reach out beyond our parish communities to support those in great need in other areas of the world.

2019 Annual Jubilarian Mass The annual Jubilarian Mass honoring couples married 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 51+ years will be held Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. To register please use the sign up forms in the back of the church and return to the parish office before April 26.

ST. RAPHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND March 17, 2019

Vincentian reflection: In today’s Gospel, Jesus brings Peter, John and James to pray with Him on the mountain, and we “see” the supernatural scene of the transfiguration; Jesus’ face and clothing became dazzling white. From a cloud comes the

voice of God the Father that said: “This is my chosen Son, listen to him.” We need to take to heart gospel living. “This Sunday we are given a glimpse of glory to help us on our journey of a lifetime of self-emptying. This tells us something about how we might keep Sundays. If each Sunday is a day of rest, a time to be good to ourselves, to do something special that is uplifting, to enter into a moment of glory by praying, we would be better fortified to continue our journey.” (Living Liturgy, p.74). Practice keeping the Lord’s Day holy. Words of appreciation for parishioners: The 2019 CBS Shelter Week demonstrated St. Raphael’s commitment to the residents of The Women’s Center! The provision of meals and much-needed supplies was a blessing for the residents and staff of the center and was deeply appreciated. Thank you to all the families and parish organizations who provided what it was needed most: love and respect for our sisters trying to improve their lives. March 17

th is the deadline for supply donations; if there

are any additional supplies you wish to donate, please donate them no later than Sunday evening in the reception area of the school. CRS Rice Bowl-Listening closely to those who go unheard: In South Sudan, ongoing violence continues, forcing many to seek refuge in a neighboring country, such as Uganda. This week, we encounter one named Annet, a 16 year old who became “mom” to her three younger siblings after their parents’ death four years earlier. Uganda’s refugee settlement, Bidi Bidi, is home to over 300,000. Imagine the scene and how a 16 year old would have to protect and care for her siblings. She received assistance from CRS; they provided her with one of their houses built for families, a plot of land to farm, farming tools and taught her how to farm. Annet has to wait until she can return to her homeland but now she knows a brighter future will come. She recently stated: “My hope is to raise my siblings,” she says. “And I know I can do it with the help of CRS and my Catholic faith.” To find the recipe from Uganda (Bamia or Okra Stew), visit: https://www.crsricebowl.org/recipe/bamia .

ADW Lenten Food Drive is around the corner: Next weekend, March 23-24, brown paper bags will be distributed after All Masses. Printed on it is the list of items to donate according to the first letter of your surname. Please take one from one of the volunteers! Return your donation on the weekend of March 30-31, to the truck parked in the circle of the parking lot. Volunteer hours are still available for both weekends. Kindly call or email Sandy Shamburek at 240-864-2514/[email protected]. Proceeds to benefit St. Martin’s/Gaithersburg food pantry.

“Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring.”

~St Catherine of Siena

Mondays are St. Raphael’s host day for 40 Days for Life! We are asking parishioners to sign up by visiting: Https://40dayssforlife.com/local-campaign/bethesda/. The location for prayer is located on the public sidewalk north of the Wildwood Shopping Center (in front of the Sun Trust Bank) on Old Georgetown Road. For parking instructions, visit: www.prayforbethesda.com. For those parishioners unable to physically be present at the site, pray at home. Prayer is a powerful tool we have to end the violence on unborn babies.

Don’t go it alone: One of the tragic results that a post-abortive woman learns is that after the abortion, the clinic that urged her to have the abortion so she could have freedom to make decisions with her own body, those people are no longer available to them for help! In general, the aftermath of abortion is ignored by the public. Many of the groups who work to protect abortion legislation think the woman who suffers from these symptoms is making them up. But there is hope after abortion. Critical to healing, women need to find support and understanding in a safe and confidential setting with proven methods. One example of such a program is call Project Rachel. At Project Rachel, trained counselors, priest and ministers are prepared to help post-abortive women. The help comes in support groups and retreats that can provide guidance and relief from the negative thoughts of self-doubt and unworthiness. Anyone can ask for the help available to help women heal from abortion. Their website is www.hopeafterabortion.com.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

First Eucharist Reminders Attend Sunday (or Saturday night) Mass each week - because your child’s second, third, fourth, and 100th Communion are just as important as his/her first Communion. Now is the time to be fully active in the life of the Church and to form habits that will endure.

This week, families are completing chapter four in God's Gift Eucharist workbook and Together parents booklet. Older children (grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) are completing chapter five in Eucharist: We Give Thanks and Praise.

All families are sharing a special family meal whenever possible, since the Eucharist is both a sacrifice and a meal.

Those families who missed the Signation Rite are asked to contact the SRRE office to receive a Cross and then to pray the rite at home.

Confirmation Student Reminders Confirmation II: Please be sure to forward the Decision Point videos link and Confirmation rehearsal and Mass information to your Confirmation sponsor. Confirmation candidates will be interviewed during their SRRE class time, SRS religion class time, or by appointment. Interviews will begin March 17 and continue through April 2.

We just learned that Bishop Bevard will be at St. Raphael to celebrate the Confirmation Mass on May 11. Bishop Fisher will be here to celebrate the Confirmation Mass on May 18. Letters to the Bishop are due in the SRRE office this week.

Confirmation I students are working on their Confirmation Service Projects. Our hope is that they are learning more about Catholic Teaching regarding the Life and Dignity of the Human Person; the Call to Family, Community, and Participation; Rights and Responsibilities; the Option for the Poor and Vulnerable; the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers; Solidarity; and Care for God's Creation.

Prayer Ministry As the day of sacraments approaches children, teens, and adults can be visited by demons of doubt, fear, and presumption. They will need are the virtues of faith, of hope, and of charity to help them. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1813) reminds us that these theological virtues are gifts from God. “They are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and of meriting eternal life.” Please pray for all those preparing to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil and during the Easter season.

Catechists and Class Aides Needed Throughout our lives we depend on others – parents, family

members, and catechists - to form us in our Catholic faith.

This formation has several aspects: knowledge of our faith,

liturgical education, moral formation, prayer, life in a faith

community, and how to share the gospel. SRRE seeks to

support parents and other catechists in this work of faith

formation. We are currently in need of two class aides and a child care aide for our Monday night classes (7:00-8:15 PM). To learn more about how you can become involved in the ministry of catechesis this spring or in the future, please contact Mary Beaudoin.

Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World

In his apostolic letter Gaudete et Exsultate (in English, Rejoice and Be Glad), Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to become saints. This week: Ideologies striking at the heart of the Gospel

We often hear it said that, with respect to relativism and the flaws of our present world,

the situation of migrants, for example, is a lesser issue. Some Catholics consider it a secondary issue compared to the “grave” bioethical questions. That a politician looking for votes might say such a thing is understandable, but not a Christian, for whom the only proper attitude is to stand in the shoes of those brothers and sisters of ours who risk their lives to offer a future to their children. Can we not realize that this is exactly what Jesus demands of us, when he tells us that in welcoming the stranger we welcome him (Matthew 25:35)? Saint Benedict did so readily, and though it might have “complicated” the life of his monks, he ordered that all guests who knocked at the monastery door be welcomed “like Christ,”

85 with a gesture of veneration;

86

the poor and pilgrims were to be met with “the greatest care and solicitude.”
