Ordinary Time
The term “Ordinary Time” is not to be understood as
“everyday” or “ho-hum.” The word “ordinary” has its root
in the Latin word ordo or ordinatio which stands for
“rule” or “organization.” This is because these Sundays
do not have any special titles, they are only counted-
one after the other in an orderly fashion. The first week
of Ordinary Time begins with the feast of the Baptism of
the Lord on Monday and then continues to tell the story
of what Jesus did during his ministry. This is a very
important time of year for us as we will hear in our
Sunday readings all those things that explain why he
was crucified for us.
Christ was a polarizing figure in his day and continues to
be so in our time. He challenged the authorities of his
day, called people to a radical way of life, and gave
proof of his divinity through miracles. One might wonder
what was so controversial about this… His basic
teaching was love and respect of others while finding a
close relationship with the Father. Unfortunately, many
people choose to reject these basic tenets of faith in
favor of being selfish, greedy, and vengeful.
Often the best way to convince others of the need for
faith in their lives is by simply telling a story. Each of us
has a story of faith to tell, but if you don’t then you can
always turn to the Gospel. The readings for Ordinary
Time are full of stories, parables, and the Lord’s interac-
tion with many different kinds of people. If you pay at-
tention during this season, you may find a story that
someone you know could stand to hear. Don’t bother
trying to sound like an experienced theologian- just tell
the story and let the words speak for themselves.
-Fr. Paul

navigate the stairs to the cafe-
teria and their caregivers.

St. Mary's has identified a need for all ages, of
warm hats, gloves, and
coats. Please keep them in
mind as you do your Janu-
ary cleaning. A box will be
placed in St. Clements for
your generous gifts. There
is still plenty of winter when
these items are of great
necessity.
The Diocese of Davenport will be mailing contribu-tion statements to those who donated to the Annual Diocesan Appeal in 2017. A separate contribution statement will also be mailed to those who donated to the Catholic Foundation/Seminarian Appeal in 2017. If you donated to both the Diocese and the Foundation, you will receive two statements. The statements will be mailed January 25 and marked as important on the envelope. If you have ques-tions regarding your contributions contact the Dio-cese: 563-324-1911.
We have many volunteers who give us the support
needed to do the things that our church community
requires. Thank you to them and their generous use
of their gifts. Have you been looking for something to
do for your parish family? All it takes is a little time.
You don’t have to have special skills and the reward
is worth every minute. Coming up is the fish fry,
which is a wonderful place to start. There are things
going on Weds-Sat every week. Also a renewed family
life committee is being formed to include more cele-
brations and gatherings of children, elderly and fami-
lies. Call 322-0987 or send a note to
[email protected] to join in the fun.
