Doreen Kelly, Pastoral Minister . . . . . .

“They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations as an offering to the Lord… to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the Lord…” Isaiah 66:20

“‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate…’” Luke 13:24

“And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God.” Luke 13:29

Some years ago I went on a weekend trip to Milwaukee to celebrate the 50th birthday of a dear friend. The arrangements for the weekend had been made by two women in our group of five. We were to have a special dinner on Saturday night at a location that the two planners kept secret from the group, and especially from the “birthday girl.” When dinner time approached, we headed to the hotel entrance thinking we would catch a taxi, but the planners said the restaurant was in walking distance, so off we went out into the cold, starry February night. We followed the leaders down slushy streets and eventually turned into a dimly lit alley, which was completely confusing to the three of us not “in the know.” The leaders located an almost imperceptible door in the wall of a building and said we had arrived at our destination, but that we now had to “get in.” We entered a small dark vestibule, within which, was a narrow door with a small darkened slit of a window. The door opened and one of the leaders stepped inside…and the door closed behind her! It opened again and the other leader did the same, leaving the three of us in complete confusion and more than a little anxious. We whispered to each other nervously – what should we do? Do we need a ticket? How do we find the other two? We had no idea! The “birthday girl,” brave at 50 years old, stepped up to the door. It opened; she disappeared. Not wanting to be the last one left in the vestibule, I approached the door. On stepping beyond it, I found myself in another small dark room. A voice said, “Password please,” of which, of course, I had no clue! Would I have to leave? Would I be separated from my friends and end up lost in a dark alley in an unfamiliar city? Would I be left behind? God compassionately creates us in God’s image because doing so leads us to the Kingdom, back to God. Two particular facets of God’s plan speak to me in today’s Readings. First, we are constantly on a journey toward a greater fullness. Our journey may be literal – we travel to earthly places in search of beauty, adventure, education, and experiences that will expand our sense of self. In the same way, and often without leaving home, we journey intellectually and spiritually. Second, we are corporate: we are drawn to others; we need others. Many things in life can only be accomplished with the help of others. God, the Lord, sent the Israelites to “gather nations of every language” so that they could share with them the glory of the Lord, providing the way for these newcomers to gain access to “the holy mountain” – the place where God dwells. They had to be brought along by those who already believed and knew God’s compassion and mercy, and they had to claim it as their own – make it their “password.” In his ministry, and especially on his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus taught and modeled God’s compassion and mercy. He did this in radical and surprising ways by healing untouchables and spending time with outcasts and known sinners – the “last” in society of that time. Making the last first IS the way through the “narrow gate” into the Kingdom. How do we do this? How can we be like Jesus? How can we gain entry? We already have the password: GRACE – God’s self-communication of compassion and mercy which call’s out to the image of God that exists within each of us! Nurtured in prayer, scripture, and sacraments! Enacted in love! Love gets us through the narrow door every time!

God bless!

(A complete set of this summer’s series on “Grace,” including bibliography, are available through the Parish Office.)
