BAPTISMS Dates and times are announced at the baptismal class. Parents of children to be baptized must attend two classes of prepara-tion. Godparents need only attend the first class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received Confirmation. The classes take place on the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm in English in the Old Church. If you do not live in this parish, you must obtain a letter of permission from your own parish to baptize your child at St. Peter Chanel. The Tender Face of Our Mother By Archbishop Jose H. Gomez

written December 14, 2012 Editor’s note: On Dec. 12, Archbishop Gomez began a new tradition at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels — celebrating midnight Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, following the traditional celebration of las mañanitas, an evening of song & dance in honor of the Virgin. The following is adapted from the Archbishop’s homily, which was delivered in Spanish. For the first time, tonight we celebrate this glorious feast in the presence of the precious relic of the holy tilma that bears Our Lady’s miraculous image! This is the only relic of this kind in our country or anywhere else outside of Mexico City. With this relic in our new Chapel to the Virgin, we feel a deep spiritual connection tonight with our brothers & sisters in Mexico — and with Guadalupanos of every continent! We belong to one family of God! Our brothers & sisters are scattered through every nation. Mary is the Mother of all of us! We turn to her tonight as Mother & Star of the Evangelization of America. We thank her for bringing Jesus to our countries & the gift of faith. We turn to the Virgin tonight also in a very personal way — as our mother. The miraculous tilma of St. Juan Diego gives us the only true “portrait” of our Mother Mary that has ever been “made.” It was a portrait “painted” from roses by the hand of God! That is why this beautiful relic we have is so precious! What a beautiful gift our Father has given us — to allow us to see the face of our tender Mother, who is the Mother of God! We need to turn to this image of our Mother all the time. We need to gaze on her sweet face & look into her peaceful eyes. We need to talk to her as little children & tell her everything that is in our heart. We need to feel her maternal tenderness toward us. Tonight we remember her apparition at Tepeyac. We remember the words of hope she spoke to St. Juan Diego: “Am I not here, I who have the honor to be your Mother? Are you not in my shadow & under my protection? … Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need anything more?” This great feast reminds us: We are surrounded everywhere by the love of God! We have Jesus Christ, our brother, who walks with us every day & gives himself to us — Body & Blood — in the holy Eucharist. We have the angels & the saints watching over us! And we have our tender Mother, the Virgin Mary! In her deepest heart, Mary is a mother who loves us. She asks nothing for herself. All for Jesus! All to be our mother! Through Mary who brings us Jesus — a new world opens up for us. We can live like a new creation. We can hope for great things for ourselves & for our families & children. We are children of God now! We can turn to God & call him, “Abba! Father.” We have all this through Jesus — and through the gift of the Virgin Mary who lives to bring us Jesus. We all know the story of the Visitation (Luke 1:39-48). Mary has just learned that Jesus is in her womb. And in haste she runs to bring Jesus to her cousin, St. Elizabeth. In this story we see the “missionary” & motherly heart of the Blessed Virgin. We see that Mary is filled with so much joy, such a desire to share Jesus! And when Mary tells her about Jesus, St. Elizabeth is also filled with joy!

EL TIERNO ROSTRO DE NUESTRA MADRE Homilía - Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

Por Monseñor José H. Gómez escrito Diciembre 14, 2012 Queridos hermanos y hermanas Guadalupanos, ¡Qué noche tan hermosa! Por primera vez, esta noche celebramos esta Santa Misa de me-dianoche en la presencia de la preciosa reliquia de la tilma sagrada que lleva la imagen milagrosa de la Virgen en nuestra Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles! Esta reliquia de la Tilma de San Juan Diego es la única reliquia de este tipo en los Estados Unidos y probablemente en cualquier otro lugar fuera de la ciudad de México. Con esta reliquia en nuestra nueva capilla a la Virgen, sentimos esta noche una profunda conexión espiritual con nuestros herma-nos y hermanas en México - ¡y con los fieles Guadalupanos de todos los continentes! ¡Todos pertenecemos a una sola familia de Dios! Nuestros her-manos y hermanas están esparcidos por todas las naciones. María es la Madre de todos nosotros. Nos dirigimos a ella esta noche como Madre y Estrella de la Evangelización de América. Le da-mos las gracias por traer a Jesús a nuestros países y por el don de la fe. Nos dirigimos a la Virgen esta noche también de una manera muy personal - como nuestra madre. La tilma milagrosa de San Juan Diego nos muestra el único verda-dero “retrato” de nuestra Madre María, que jamás se ha “hecho”. ¡Fue un retrato “pintado” de rosas por la mano de Dios! Por eso, esta hermosa reliquia que tenemos es tan preciosa. ¡Qué hermoso regalo nos ha dado nuestro Padre - que nos permite ver el rostro de nuestra tierna Madre, la Madre de Dios! Tenemos que recurrir a esta imagen de nuestra Madre todo el tiempo. Tenemos que contemplar su dulce rostro y mirar sus ojos llenos de paz. Tenemos que hablar con ella como niños y decirle todo lo que está en nuestro corazón. Necesitamos sentir su ternu-ra maternal para con nosotros. Esta noche recordamos su aparición en el Tepeyac. Recordamos las palabras de esperanza que habló a San Juan Diego: “¿No estoy yo aquí, que soy tu madre? ¿No estás bajo mi sombra y bajo mi protección? ... ¿No estás en el hueco de mi manto, en el cruce de mis brazos? ¿Necesitas algo más?” (ii) Esta gran fiesta nos recuerda: ¡Estamos rodeados por todas partes del amor de Dios! Tenemos a Jesucristo, nuestro hermano, que camina con nosotros todos los días y se entrega a nosotros – en Cuerpo y Sangre – en la Sagrada Eucaristía. ¡Contamos con los ángeles y santos que velan por nosotros! ¡Y tenemos nuestra tier-na Madre, la Virgen María! Las lecturas de la Sagrada Escritura que hemos escuchado esta noche nos revelan el corazón maternal de nuestra Madre María. En lo más profundo de su corazón, María es una madre que nos ama. Ella no pide nada para sí misma. ¡Todo por Jesús! ¡Todo para ser nuestra madre! Como hemos escuchado en la primera lectura, María nos trae la sabiduría de Dios, que como agua viva renovará nuestras almas. Por medio de María, Jesús entra en nuestro mundo y en nuestros corazones, nos dice St. Paul en la segunda lectura. Y de Jesús recibimos el don de su Espíritu Santo, que nos hace hijos de Dios. A través de María, que nos trae a Jesús, un mundo nuevo se abre para nosotros. Podemos vivir como una nueva creación. Podemos esperar grandes cosas para nosotros mismos y para nuestras fami-lias e hijos.

Archbishops homily continued… She is rejoicing because she realizes that she is a child of God. She realizes that Mary is the Mother of the Lord! And she cries out: Blessed are you among women! And blessed is the fruit of your womb! We say these exact same words every day when we pray the “Hail Mary.” And we should always pray the “Hail Mary” in the same spirit as St. Elizabeth — rejoicing that we are children of God! So tonight, we fly to Mary our Mother. We ask her to teach us how to be good mothers & good fathers to our children. We ask her to teach us how to be good sons & daughters. We want to be people who love God! A people who love our chil-dren & our families! We want to be people who live like Jesus & Mary & St. Joseph! So we ask the Virgin to help us to always be like her. To live with Jesus in our hearts! To live to share Jesus with every one we meet & in everything we do. Let us turn to our Mother’s sweet face! Let us stay close to our Mother! Let us allow her to be our life, our sweetness & our hope!

La homilía del Arzobispo continuada… ¡Ahora somos hijos de Dios! ¡Nada debe perturbarnos! Podemos volvernos a Dios llamándolo: “¡Abba! Padre”. ¡Podemos conocer la esperanza del cielo! Tenemos todo esto por Jesús – y por el don de la Virgen María, que vive para traernos a Jesús. Esta es la imagen de María que ve-mos en nuestra lectura del Evangelio para esta fiesta. Todos conocemos la historia de la Visitación. María acaba de ente-rarse de que Jesús está en su vientre. Y a toda prisa corre a llevar a Jesús a su prima, Santa Isabel. En esta historia vemos el corazón “misionero” y maternal de la Santísima Virgen. Vemos que María está llena de alegría, ¡con un gran deseo de compartir a Jesús! Y cuando María le transmite a Jesús, Santa Isabel también se llena de alegría. Ella se regocija en el Espíritu Santo. Ella se alegra porque se da cuenta de que es hija de Dios. Se da cuen-ta de que María es la Madre del Señor. Escuchamos sus hermosas palabras a María: ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres! ¡Y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! Decimos estas mismas palabras todos los días cuando rezamos el “Ave María”. Y siempre debemos orar el “Ave María” con el mis-mo espíritu de Santa Isabel – regocijándonos porque somos hijos de Dios! Así que esta noche hermanos y hermanas, agradecemos a nuestro Padre celestial por los muchos dones que nos ha dado a través de María. Y nos acogemos a María, nuestra Madre Santísima de Guadalupe. Le pedimos que nos enseñe cómo ser buenas madres y buenos padres para nuestros hijos. Le pedimos que nos enseñe cómo ser buenos hijos e hijas. ¡Queremos ser personas que aman a Dios! ¡Queremos amar a nues-tros hijos y nuestras familias! ¡Queremos ser personas que viven como Jesús y María y San José! Así que le pedimos a la Virgen que nos ayude a ser siempre como ella. ha mostrado su ternura y nunca ha olvidado la alianza que pactó. El corazón de Dios está abierto a los que viven en el

temor y titubean en la noche: Él les muestra el camino. Bendito sea Juan, tu enviado que prepara tu venida.

Benditas sean las mujeres y los hombres que nos abren el camino. Bendito sea el Señor que ha suscitado una fuerza que nos salva Lc 1, 68-69

Señor y Dios nuestro, haced del mismo modo, te lo rogarnos, que celebrando con alegría la Natividad de nuestro Señor Jesu-cristo, merezcamos, por una vida digna de El, gozar de su pre-sencia. Así sea.
