ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH MANY CULTURES, MANY COUNTRIES, MANY LANGUAGES IN ONE BODY: ST. PAUL’S FAMILY
TODAY’S GOSPEL Jesus said to his disciples: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me.

GOSPEL REFLECTION
Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the
was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky
waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).
PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10
In the gospel today Jesus continues to speak to the disciples at the Last Supper. Knowing that he is about to leave them he promises, “I will not leave you orphans” (v.18), pledging the gift of the Holy Spirit, “to be with you always” (v.16). Jesus’ death and resurrection are part of God’s plan and will lead to a deeper union between Jesus and his followers. The gift of “another Advocate” (v.2) assures his never-ending presence to the Church.
Ironically, the persecution of the Church leads to its growth. After Stephen’s death,
leads to its growth. After Stephen’s death, Philip, another deacon, goes to “Samaria…(proclaiming) the Messiah to them.” (v.5). That he is empowered by the Spirit is indicated by the fact that he speaks with power. “The crowds paid attention to what was said” (v.6) and he performs miracles, exorcizing demons and healing those who are paralyzed or crippled. In this he is doing the work of Jesus (cf. Jn. 14:12). This successful evangelization leads to a visit from Peter and John who “prayed for them” (v.15) and “laid hands on them” (v.17), as a result of which, “they received the holy Spirit” (v.17).
Peter writes with an awareness that believers will suffer for their faith. But this should not discourage us, “for Christ also suffered” (v.18). We are called to be examples of integrity, practicing “gentleness and reverence” (v.16), even in our dealings with those who persecute us. We are also called to be a people of hope since Christ’s suffering has a uniqueness about it that leads us to God. Although our suffering unites us to him, Christ’s suffering unites us to God in a way that our suffering could never achieve. He died, “the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous” (v.18).
For Reflection: Do I see value in suffering in my own life, in the lives of others? How do I experience the presence of the Spirit in the Church?
CATHOLIC HUMOR Little Billy was left to fix lunch. When his
mother returned with a friend, she noticed that Billy had already strained the tea. “Did you find the tea strainer?” his mother asked. “No, mother, I couldn’t, so I used the fly swatter,” replied Billy. His mother nearly fainted, so Billy hastily added, “Don’t get excited, Mother. I used an old one.”
LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK 1. Turn enemies into friends by doing something nice
for them.
2. Remember that a person that is foolish with money is foolish in other ways too.
3. Don’t cut corners.
4. Everyone loves praise. Look hard for ways to give it to them.
5. Be original even if it means being a little eccentric.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

Catholic Charities relies heavily on parishes and schools for food donations. The summer has become an important time to gather food which will be needed during the colder months. The demands upon our food pantries have escalated in recent years due to the downturn in the economy, loss of jobs and the tough time many people have stretching their dollars. Catholic Charities is one of the most important local sources of food for literally thousands of our brothers and sisters in genuine need - particularly children. Your participation will help those in need.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR:
After much thought, the Pastoral Council, Finance Committee and I have agreed that we have now reached the point where we need to adjust our Mass schedule to better adapt to the parking lot situation, as well as the much needed quiet time between Masses for the benefit of the Priests, as well as the Parish Community.
Starting the weekend of June 3rd, 2017, the Mass Schedule will be as follows: The 5:30 p.m. Saturday Mass, along with the 7:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Sunday Masses will remain unchanged. The 9:30 a.m. Mass will be changed to begin at 9:00 a.m. and the 11:30 a.m. Mass will be changed to begin at 11:00 a.m.
I realize that these changes are challenging and I thank you for your help and cooperation as we make the best of this transition. As always, if you have any questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. May God Bless us all,
Fr. Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D. Pastor
