GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although

Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK

To prepare for the day of judgment we should live honorable lives, Paul tells us. In Thessalonians we hear advice given to the community to follow the example of Paul, who, “night and day…worked, so as to not burden any of you” (3:8). The example of the apostle is put forward as a model for the believers to follow. We should be busy about the Lord’s work so that when he comes we will be pleasing to him.

In today’s gospel Jesus speaks of the coming times of trial. These verses probably reflect the experience of Luke’s community.

of trial, suffering, and persecution in this present age until he comes again at the end of the world. These verses probably reflect the experience of Luke’s community. In A.D. 70 the Romans destroyed the Temple of Jerusalem, leaving no “stone upon another stone” (21:6). We know from the letters of John and Paul that some were presenting themselves as Christ returned to bring about the end of the world. Christians are cautioned about this. Even in our own day we find evangelists telling us that we are living in the “end times.” What Luke’s church knows is that some of them will be persecuted because of their faith. Some are even betrayed by family members. In Acts of the Apostles we see Jesus’ apostles handed over “to the synagogues and to prisons” and “led before kings and governors because of (Jesus’) name” (v.12). But, Jesus assures us, “By your perseverance you will secure your lives” (v.19). God extends grace and mercy to all who will heed his call and his warning. Do not pass up, even for one day, God's invitation of grace and mercy to seek first his kingdom of righteousness and peace. This day may be your only chance before that final day comes. For Reflection: How am I preparing for Christ’s Second Coming? What price have I paid for my faith? Do you know the peace and security of a life submitted to the lordship of Jesus Christ?

CATHOLIC HUMOR

“Dear Lord, so far today I’ve done all right: I haven’t gossiped; lost my temper; been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent. I’m very thankful for the kind of day You have given me. But in a few minutes, Lord I’m going to get out of bed, and from then on I’m going to need a lot more help. Amen.

1. Don’t be rushed into making an important decision. People will understand if you say, “I’d like a little more time to think it over. Can I get back to you tomorrow?”

2. Decide to get up thirty minutes earlier. Do this for a year, and you will add seven and one-half days to your waking world.

3. Watch for big problems. They disguise big opportunities.

4. Don’t drive on slick tires.

5. .

6. .

7. Don’t interrupt.

8. Give thanks before every meal.

9. When you accept a task, finish it.

10. Give people the benefit of the doubt.

Spiritual Works of Mercy

Convert Sinners, Instruct the Ignorant, Advise the Doubtful, Comfort the Sorrowful, Bear Wrongs Patiently, Forgive Injuries, Pray for the Living and the Dead

How can we show others the mercy of God?

We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God's mercy.

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee of Mercy

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Message from our Pastor: I would like to personally thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity and support given to our parish community. Adjacent is our Financial Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. We were not as profitable as last year, due to the installation of our Elevator and Resurrection Wall. Nevertheless, I am pleased with this great achievement to our parish. This wouldn’t have been accomplished if it weren’t for your continued generosity. May God bless you always, Fr. Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D.
