Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost," they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Matthew 14:22-33 IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING MARRIED IN OUR CHURCH, PLEASE CONTACT OUR PARISH OFFICE. GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky

waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Mt. Horeb is another name for Mt. Sinai, the Mountain of God. Elijah’s experience of the presence of God on this mountain recalls Moses’ encounter with God in the same place. But they are very different experiences. While Moses’ meetings with God involve storms, earthquakes and fire, Elijah experiences the Lord in “a light silent sound” (v.12), sometimes interpreted as a whisper. Elijah’s experience teaches us that sometimes God’s self-manifestation is not what we would expect.

we would expect. St. Paul tells the Romans that the Jews, “my kin according to the flesh” (v.3), are the recipients of God’s continuing grace. “From them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah” (v.5). God’s promise to Abraham, to bless the nations through his descendants, is realized in Jesus. Matthew’s episode of Jesus walking on water has the added episode of Peter attempting to walk on water. This is unique to Matthew who emphasizes the role of Peter in his gospel. Jesus’ walking on water serves as a theophany, revealing his identity as God. Matthew tells us that after Jesus got into the boat and the sea calmed down, the disciples “did him homage, saying, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God’” (v. 33). The fact that some of the disciples were fishermen and were frightened by the storm heightens the storm’s intensity. It also heightens the sense of Jesus’ power. But the episode of Peter walking on water adds the dimension of the importance of faith to the story. Peter begins to walk on the sea but then, becoming frightened, he starts to sink. Jesus calls him, “you of little faith” (v.31) and asks why he doubted. In this text God is revealed not in the wind and sea but as the one who, more powerful than the forces of nature, can save us. For Reflection: Is my experience of God more like that of Moses or Elijah? When has God enabled me to walk on water in my life? People’s expectations of me as a Christian?

CATHOLIC HUMOR 1. Sue: See that woman over there? She’s been

married four times….once to a millionaire; then to an actor; third, to a minister; and last to an undertaker. Sal: I know! Once for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.

2. Girl: Too bad you flunked the test. How far were you from the right answers? Boy: Two seats!

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK 1. Show extra respect for people whose jobs put

IMPORTANT HEALTH SCREENINGS/EXÁMENES IMPORTANTES DE PREVENCIÓN Stroke Scan Plus will be here at St. Paul’s performing 8 ultrasound screenings on Friday and Saturday, November 3rd and 4th 2017.

Are you one of the many that have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or you have family history of heart disease, stroke, or internal cancers? If so, absolutely do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possible serious disease.

They will scan the arteries in the neck, the main artery off the heart, the thyroid, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and the arteries in the legs.

These screenings are typically NOT performed at annual check-ups, nor will insurance companies pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Collectively, these screenings cost thousands. They will be offering these screenings to you for $155 for all 8 combined. You will also receive an Atrial Fibrillation screening. Insurance is NOT necessary to receive this discount. However, Pre-Registration IS necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1- 866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today.
