Farewell Mrs Carm el Brut on

This week we farewelled a longstanding member of the St Patrick's College community. Mrs Bruton has served for more than 30 years at the College, originally in the Christian Brothers School, through the important years of amalgamation with the Presentation school, Mary Immaculate College and St Patrick?s College Sutherland.

Carmel worked in many different roles at the College and spent the last number of years in the College Library. Her work and dedication have been outstanding and have contributed significantly to the great College community we know today. Carmel has a deep knowledge of the history of the school, the staff and the College traditions. She will be greatly missed. On behalf of the thousands of students and their families, the staff and the College leaders, both past and present, a huge thank you for your work over many years. We wish Carmel the very best as she moves to the next adventure.

Congrat ulat ions

- Year 11 students Emily Whiteman, Grace Mamo, Elektra Lammers and Daniel Mauro for helping pack the container to support Monsignor Brian Rayner from Gymea Parish and the Fiji Appeal. Monsignor Rayner is always appreciative of the support the students of St Pat?s give to his parish.

- Mr Spencer Jones, father of Juliette in Year 9 for his outstanding performance on The Voice and making it to the finals. A great achievement that kept us glued to our seats for many weeks.

Subst at ion

Working with Ausgrid, the College is constructing a new substation to augment our existing power supply. The substation will be located on President Avenue, within the College grounds.  Construction will begin in the July holidays and is scheduled to be completed before the year 's end. There will be no disruptions to the daily operations of the College during the construction period. Students who are attending revision classes will need to enter and exit the College via Glencoe Street. Nagle Campus will be out of bounds except for drama and music students who will need to be aware of painting works when moving to and from the drama and music rooms.

Thank You

Throughout the term, especially over the last couple of days during parent/teachers interviews, I have had the opportunity to speak with many parents. I would like to take this opportunity to especially thank and acknowledge our parents and carers. Your support, care and love can never be underestimated or measured. It is such a privilege to participate in your childs? learning journeys as they meet challenges, take risks and grow. I wish every St Pat?s student a fun, restful and safe holiday so they can return refreshed for next term - ready to aspire to do their best and inspire the best in one another.

Go gently, Ms Libby Denny

From t he Assist ant Pr incipal

Sem est er One Repor t s

It was pleasing to see so many parents and students attend parent/teacher/student interviews over the past two days and engage in conversation supporting improved learning. For many students their report validates the effort and organisation they have put into their work in Terms 1 and 2. For others their report will identify areas in need of improvement, whether it be to do with engagement, effort, attitude, organisation or a combination of these. Students should use the holidays to reflect on their performance and develop/reset realistic goals for the second half of the year.

St ar t of Term 3

A reminder that all students return to school on Tuesday, 18 July. Monday, 17 July is a Staff Development Day where our staff will be involved in reviewing and strengthening our pastoral care structures.

Wint er Uniform

Students are to be congratulated on the way in which they have worn their uniform throughout Term 2. All students are to return for Term 3 in full College winter uniform, including stockings for the girls. Full details can be found on pages 5-8 of the student diary and all items are available from Lowes at Miranda. A reminder that the blazer must be worn to and from school each day and may be removed at the end of Pastoral Care, and that the jumper cannot be worn without the blazer.

Groom ing

I ask for parents continued support in ensuring students return to the College with haircuts that are appropriate to the standards expected. It is always unfortunate when students start the term on a negative note for something that is a result of a poor decision.

As this is the final newsletter for the term, I thank you for your support throughout Term 2. I hope you have a restful and refreshing break.

As we begin the holidays many students spend more time on social media as a means of staying in touch with their friends and sharing memorable moments throughout the break. The start of the holidays is often a great time to have a conversation reminding young people about the appropriate use of technology. This week's article by Catherine Gerhardt provides some tips worth remembering in relation to social media.

This week Snap Chat (a very popular social media App with our students) introduced a new feature called Snap Map which allows you to share your location with your friends on a map, however, what many are unaware of is that it will share your exact location with anyone on your friends list every time you open the App.

In order to protect both the safety and privacy of our students, we would encourage parents to discuss with their children the dangers of sharing such detailed information pertaining to their location and encourage Snap Chat users to consider switching to Ghost Mode which can be found by tapping the settings gear in the top right hand corner and select "ghost mode" in order to disable this function.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday.

Joy, Hope and Spir it

Last Friday marked our first lead up event to ACYF, and evangelisation evening for the year. 18 students and 3 teachers made their way to St. John Bosco, Engadine for a music and Q&A session with Fr. Rob Galea, and dinner with fellow students. The students in attendance had a fantastic night sharing stories, and engaging on their faith with other youth. I congratulate all students who attended on their participation, engagement, and representation of the College. Thank you to Miss Abade and Mr Donohue who came along for the evening - your support is much appreciated.

Mrs Lauren Smith, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Last Friday a group of students including myself went to the Joy, Hope and Spirit event featuring Fr Rob Galea. The evening was such an inspiring and amazing experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I honestly never thought it would be so much fun, from singing songs to listening to inspiring stories, eating pizza and learning new things about each other. It is definitely an experience I will never forget. Thank you to the teachers who came with us - Mrs Smith, Mr Donohue, Ms Abade and a big thank you to Fr Rob Galea for making the night so unforgettable.

Joy, Hope and Spir it (cont'd)

Friday nights are a time that many of us go out and create memories, and for a group of us, we experienced spiritual strengthening. Arriving at St John Bosco many of us have already had the pleasure of gathering in the presences of Fr Rob Galea. Personally, I didn?t know what to expect; it 's safe to say that it was more than what I expected and I wouldn?t change this experience for anything. With blessings, prayers and songs, the night was filled with joy, praise and a growing presence of the Holy Spirit. The ways in which Fr Rob spoke about life and the way we can grow closer to God and ourselves spoke meaning to me, challenging me to rethink and regrow in the light of God. A huge thank you to the teachers who took time out of their Friday night to take us to this wonderful and overly enjoyable event.

Rani Ram, 12M

On Tuesday, 27 June, Monique Viskovic and I joined St Patrick?s Primary School students at the St Joseph?s Conference Centre in Bringelly to participate in Captiv8, aimed at all students to learn about ?Joy? and how we could spread this throughout our communities. Once all the primary students had arrived we sat in the Good Shepherd Hall and heard an introduction from Peggy Saab, one of the organisers of the Event. Father Maurice joined us all in Prayer and Acknowledgment of country. After

this, student leaders were asked to stand at the front so that we could get into our groups for an ?Ice Breaker? activity. Groups were based on the caps received at the beginning of the day. Once we were in our groups, we challenged the children to talk with someone who wasn?t from their school and to potentially ?break the ice? and make them feel comfortable with students they had never met before. After this, it was time for our workshops; these had been chosen by student leaders separately. Students went to this workshop and assisted the teacher in charge for a total of three sessions. During these workshops, we were challenged as much as the children participating in the activities to not only engage the children and the teachers in the activity, but to also seek the true meaning of Joy and how it can relate to factors such as Gratitude. Each session spanned ten minutes and some activities included creating a gratitude stone which allowed students to show what they were most grateful for. These stones were placed at the prayer table for mass at the end of the day. Monique worked with a number of students in exploring ways to represent the Lord?s Joy through visual arts through drawing strength from God?s Joy in our own lives, especially in the face of adversity. Each student was inspired by St Teresa of Calcutta, as she said ?Jesus gives us life, life in abundance. If we are close to him we will have joy in our hearts and a smile on our face?. Following this we re-assembled in the hall for mass which was led by Father Maurice. It was accompanied by a short video of the primary students participating in a photobooth activity, where they were recorded by the senior students telling us how they would bring about joy in their community. All in all, the day was a very fulfilling experience, and we were both honoured to have been selected to participate. We would both like to thank Mrs Smith for her efforts in helping us take part in this experience, and also to the teachers ofSt Patrick?s Primary School for looking after us on the day.

Bandfest

The College Intermediate Band, Senior Band and Stage Band participated in the 2017 Bandfest competition last Tuesday, 20 June at the Kogarah Auditiorium. I'm most pleased to announce that all three participating bands won gold medals for their performances! The Intermediate Band performed a very popular rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody and the theme from How to Train Your Dragon. The Senior Band performed Disney March Spectacular and Kartoon Kaleidoscope. The Stage Band performed Chameleon, Soul Man, Moondance and Sing Sing Sing.

Much time goes into rehearsal and practice of these pieces and students are commended on their efforts in preparation for the competition. Particular thanks goes to our Band Director, Mrs Joan Thorp for all her work in arranging and coordinating the program for the event. Thank you Mrs Boyle and Mr Vartanian for your assistance, and a big thank you to our talented band tutors who

prepared our students so thoroughly.  Their support today was very much appreciated.  Thank you parents and students for your ongoing commitment to our band program, especially at this very busy time of year.

Year 7 Music - Brass Tut or ials

As part of the Year 7 Music Course - Instruments of the Orchestra - students have been involved in brass tutorials withMrs Joan Thorp. They had an opportunity to view demonstrations and to learn how to play these instruments, ranging from trumpets to tuba. This occurred during their music lessons and was enjoyed by students who can now join our

training band if interested. A big thank you to Mrs Thorp for leading this activity.

St arsearch Talent Quest

The 2017 Starsearch talent quest was a huge success, with an array of brilliance on show from Year 7 through to Year 12. Over 25 acts auditioned for the competition this year and our judges - Mrs Brenton, Ms Denny andMs Hickson had much difficulty deciding on the top three. After much judge deliberation, the following students took out the top places:

1st Place ? Monique Gough and Ricky Di Camplifor their performance of ?Moondance?

3rd Place ? Lachlan Jones, Chris Treadwell, Sam Coronel, Jesse Nichols, Christian Chareas - for their performance of ?Mr Brightside?.

Encouragem ent Award ? Josh Jarel Zarris for his performance of ?Count On Me?

I wish to also recognise the generosity of all staff and students that came to support the students. The large audience had many performers feeling nervous, yet these nerves were soon overcome once under the spotlight. All performers are congratulated for their participation and we hope to see you all again next year!

Mr Matt Dority, Music Teacher

2nd Place ? A tie between Lauren Busuttil for her performance of ?When We Were Young? and also Jemima Wrigley for her performance of 'I Dreamed A Dream'

From t he Newm an / Gif t ed & Talent ed Depar t m ent

On Friday, 23 June, ten students from St Joseph?s Primary School and 8 students from St Patrick?s College came to work with the Year 7 Newman class on poetry writing. Our aim is to produce a book of poetry by the end of Term 3. This is a joint initiative to celebrate our passion for writing.

We started the morning with the Year 7 students teaching a poem to the primary students. Students had a choice of two poems, both which explored challenging and universal themes concerning culture. The poems were ?Blessing? by Imtiaz Dhaker and ?Island Man? by Grace Nichols. They explored issues such as poverty, living in the city, shortage of water, gratitude, value of life and homesickness. The Year 7 Newman students had carefully planned ?surface? questions, followed by ?looking deeper? questions to encourage the primary students to connect with and respond to the poem. They also taught the primary students how to annotate the poem, showing their own completed annotations as an example. The primary students particularly enjoyed learning about sibilance, accumulation and personification. They also appreciated the deeper messages of both poems.

This was followed by a ?silent brainstorm? where all students explored the statement ?Poetry should say something important about the world. Agree/Disagree.? Students rigorously debated this statement, supporting their views with convincing examples and arguments.

Students were then taught the poetry form of ?cinquain? - where they attempted to tell the story of their own life, or the story of the universe - in only 22 syllables! There was a mixture of responses - from enthusiastic to frustrated. Either way - there was passion in the room!

Ms Burns from St Joseph?s Como introduced the group to our ?Newman Poetry Festival Site? - where students have formed groups with both primary and high school students - and together they will share, edit and enter their poetry.

We ended the morning with the Year 7 students sharing their presentations with the primary students, which included a number of valuable resources for the primary students to use as a stimulus for their writing.

We look forward to continuing this relationship with St Josephs Como and St Patrick?s Primary, eagerly anticipating the poetry that will soon be created.

Year 11 Indust r ial Technology Tim ber

Friday, 23 June saw the Year 11 Industrial Technology Timber class attend the annual Timber and Working With Wood Show at Sydney Olympic Park. During their time at the exhibition, students were exposed to a variety of different demonstrations such as lathe turning and slicing of slabs off a log. Once inside the hall, students viewed high quality designs submitted as past HSC projects. The Year 11?s were also able to wander through the tightly packed lanes of different species of timber displaying a variety of natural colours and grain types. Alongside this was an abundance of trained specialists who were stationed around the hall imparting their knowledge. The students all left with a positive attitude and copious amounts of new and exciting ideas for their own HSC projects. Well done on your participation on the day and the respectful manner in which each student interacted with other school students and community members.

Miss Louise Norton, Industrial Technology Teacher (TAS)

Year 11 Medit er ranean Food Truck

On 21 June, Year 11 Hospitality students ran a Food Truck out of the school kitchen, to raise money for Maliana, Timor Leste. In groups of three, students produced various foods that were on sale for a gold coin donation.

As a class we decided to model our Food Truck on a Mediterranean theme and served a variety of dishes including Greek Salad, Grilled Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki Sauce, Prosciutto and Spinach Flatbread Pizza, Lamb Gyros, Hummus and Falafel Wrap, and Haloumi kebabs with thyme and lemon baste.

In the lessons leading up to the service period the class took time to research and create recipe cards for their allocated dish. On the day each team followed their own workflow plan to produce 25 portions. Altogether the class served 150 plates to students and staff within 10 minutes.

Junior Gir ls CCC Foot ball

The team : Year 9 - Bianca Radman, Olivia Mahony, Lana Giampaoli, Shaylee Moffitt, Andie Robinson, Nicole Marzolla, Laura Schwartz, Georgia Edgell, Julia Mamo, Tess Ingram , Tulley McEvoy; Year 8 - Capri Tuffey, Eve Gardner, Lara Calabria, Alyssa Davis.

On Wednesday, 21 June our junior girls team had a knockout game against Freeman Catholic College at Kareela Oval. Freeman has always fielded a strong team and our girls knew they would need to be at their best in order to secure victory.

As the game began it was evident that two quality sides had come up against each other, with both teams waiting for the right moment to push forward and attack to snare a goal. Fifteen minutes into the game it was clear that St Pats were dominating. Bianca Radman was taking control in the middle of the park and proving very hard to deal with. Our two wingers Andie Robinson and Lana Giampaoli worked tirelessly to go forward and attack, as well as work back and help the defence out. The distribution through the middle by Charlotte Kensitt provided many opportunities in attack. However, by half time, the defensive efforts by both teams proved to be the winner, the score at half time 0-0.

In the second half it was evident what we had to do; that is make the most of our opportunities. A lobbed through ball which Alyssa Davis acrobatically reached and got the slighted touches on for a shot, lobbed over the keeper 's head, only to sneak wide of the post by millimetres. That was our greatest opportunity of the game at this stage. Freeman kept pushing through the middle but our structure made it difficult for them to create many opportunities. Approximately half way through the second half, a break away play with Lana down the left wing and a beautiful pass to the edge of the box straight to Charlotte who took the shot? GOAL! St Pat?s got up 1-0 in their toughest game yet. St Pat?s defence was key at this stage of the game. Bianca, a menace on the ball was being fouled left, right and centre. With 2 minutes to go, an unmarked player from Freeman outside the box had the opportunity to have a long distance shot, which seemed to be travelling well over the crossbar, however against the wind, it was help up and snuck in right under the bar. The game finished 1-1. This unfortunately meant Golden Goal extra time was to be played.

Two halves of Golden Goal was played with minimal opportunities to both teams. It was a very defensive approach from Freeman who played it safe the way through. At the end of Golden Goal, it was time for Penalty Shootouts. St Pat?s lost in Penalty Shootouts 3-1. It turns out that this was the second year the girls have lost to Freeman on penalties. The girls have come a long way, a courageous effort. Well done!

Year 12 Geography Excursion t o Pyrm ont - Urban Dynam ics of Urban Decay and Urban Renewal

On Friday, 23 June, the Year 12 Senior Geography class travelled to Pyrmont and Darling Harbour to study and observe first hand the urban dynamics of urban decay and urban renewal.

We arrived at school early to catch the 8.33am train to Town Hall, from where we walked to the National Maritime Museum to meet our informative and helpful guide Marina. Marina was supposed to guide us for two hours but generously stayed with us for three hours! The class examined both the natural and human geography of the area over time, drawing comparisons to the past.

We investigated the impacts of urbanisation and development of commercial and residential infrastructure in what was once a thriving commercial port and harbour. The land use here has changed dramatically over the last thirty years! It was invaluable to have the opportunity to picture the growth and history of our city.

On our ?town trail? through Pyrmont, our paths crossed with an elderly gentleman who was born, raised and to this day still a resident of Pyrmont. His name was Otto, he was 85 years of age and a former ?wharfie? and member of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) - he had seen many changes in his neighbourhood in his lifetime.

Otto?s knowledge let us gain an insight into how the area has changed from a blue collar working class suburb into an inner city urban hub for young professionals.

We stopped to eat lunch at the Harbour Side Plaza food court in Darling Harbour, where we reflected on the activities on the day. We then departed the city from Town Hall station and made our way back home.

We would like to thank Marina for giving her time, and going above and beyond her role to allow us to gain valuable insight to the area.

Also, many thanks to Mr Babic for organising an informative and enjoyable day.
