It was the year that marked the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of East and West Germany, and the final concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein. It was also a year in which remarkable leaders shone: Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Margaret Thatcher resigned after almost 12 years as Prime Minister of the UK and Hilton Rubin commenced his 16-year career at Mount Scopus College. Hilton’s many innovations have changed the face of Scopus. During his time here, we have seen the construction of the Besen Family Performing Arts Centre and the Slezak Multimedia and Technology Centre, the initiation of the Talmud class, Beit Midrash, Kavanah and Derech Eretz programs, and the introduction of the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program. Now, on his retirement from the College, we are facing the end of an era. In the Oscar-winning movie Mr Holland’s Opus, Olympia Dukakis says something that I believe encapsulates Hilton’s philosophy: “A teacher has two jobs: one, to fill young minds with knowledge. Yes. But more importantly, to give those minds a compass so that the knowledge doesn’t go to waste.” During Hilton’s time at Scopus he has fulfilled both these jobs. With a love for people, teaching and Jewish values, Hilton has inspired students and staff to find their own compass for enrichment and fulfilment. Hilton is a man who recognises individual difference and celebrates it! We have all benefited from the fact that, during his time at Mount Scopus, our school has become a place of learning that excels at identifying and nurturing that which is unique and outstanding in its students. This is evident in the stunning array of choice and opportunities offered in our programs operating from Kinder to Year 12. It is to Hilton’s credit that Scopus educates ‘al pih darkoh’ (according to each individual’s way). Rashi says that man may consider three people his parents: his mother, father and his teacher. For although his parents brought him into this world, his teacher gives him the tools and merit to enter the World To Come. Hilton is therefore the father of a very large family! Sport soars

Sport and Physical Education haveundergone a reincarnation at Scopus inrecent years.

While the choice of sports on offer hascertainly expanded, the realtransformation has been in students’participation and enthusiasm.

Through the Eastern IndependentSchools of Melbourne (EISM) interschoolcompetition, secondary students canchoose over 20 sports. From thetraditional football, cricket and netball, tobasketball, golf, soccer, tennis, hockey, badminton and more, students canalways find something of interest.

A team of 35 coaches works with Headof Sport and Physical Education, RobScholz, to ensure students have theskills and training needed to perform attheir best.

This structured, professional approach isalready reaping rewards with secondaryteams winning a staggering 17premierships this year, included our firstever Division 1 football premiership, aswell as gold in the Victorian Volleyball AllSchools Cup.

While Rob Scholz sees it as his duty toinstil a love of sport and physical activityin students, he knows the attitudesdeveloped on the sports field can beapplied across almost every subject andcarried with them for life.

With this in mind, he has introduced aunique program for Year 10 students inTerm 4 when senior interschoolcompetition is finished. Students choosefrom one of seven activities to try for afive week period: indoor rock climbing, snorkelling, ice skating, yoga, lawnbowls, 10 pin bowling and indoor bodyboarding. From all accounts theresponse has been sensational.

Chief Rabbi inspiresChief Rabbi of the Commonwealth, SirJonathan Sacks challenged students to“write their own chapter in the story ofthe Jews”, when he spoke at Scopusrecently.

He told students how as a people, Jewsare a tiny group, but we make adifference because we empower ourchildren to carry on traditions througheducation.

“Our family tree goes back longer thanany other in civilised history”, RabbiSacks said.

Comparing Jewish and Egyptian history,Rabbi Sacks made the observation thatwhile Egyptian civilisation lives only inmuseums now, we Jews, who wereonce their slaves, have survived andflourished.

By engraving our values on the heartsand minds of our children, and they ontheir children and so on, we haveachieved the sort of immortality theancient Pharaohs only dreamed of, heexplained.

“In Judaism, the greatest honour is to bea teacher”, Rabbi Sacks emphasised. The first thing Jews do when they moveto a new area is to build schools, likeScopus, to ensure that continuity.

“Our nation lives forever througheducation”, he told students.

He concluded by inspiring them to “carrytheir faith with pride”.

Our amazing raceUnder the International BaccalaureateMiddle Years Program (MYP), ourcurriculum incorporates activities thatenable students to engage in communityinvolvement, off-campus investigationsand collaboration with other schools andthe wider community.

Recently Year 8 students raced aroundthe city to discover some of the secretsof Melbourne.

The Humanities excursion onimmigration and multiculturalism wasdesigned to enhance and enrich learningthat had taken place in the classroom. Students completed tasks in small groupsby following clues and maps. They had toread maps and learn to use publictransport to make their way from oneinteresting landmark to the next. AtBirrarung Marr, they learned to appreciatethe connection between Australia’sindigenous people and their land.

The Amazing Scopus Race tookstudents to places some never knewexisted, including a foreign bookshop,Little Italy, and the Melbourne CityBaths, as well as the Chinese andImmigration Museums, the State Libraryand Glick’s.

The excursion was structured toencompass the MYP principles of learningfocusing on cultural awareness, environment, and community and service.

Year 9 Achshav InitiativeWe are excited to introduce the inaugural Year 9 Experience for the 2007 school year.

The aim of the Achshav Initiative (If Not Now, When…) is to involve students in anexperiential and reflective program, with a focus on issues and activities outside thetraditional classroom format. The opportunities for our students will include a CityCampus, Level 1 St John First Aid Training, the Creating Conversations Drug Educationprogram, an overnight farm stay, REACH workshops and community service projects.

Each new term will provide a different educational focus for students to embrace.Students will develop independence and attain a greater understanding of the worldaround them through the different activities. Incorporating the philosophies of the IBMiddle Years Program, the emphasis will be on ensuring academic disciplines inter-relatewith the program outside the classroom and so enable our students to understand theconnection between their classroom learning and the outside world.

In a dynamic and ever changing world, Scopus strives to provide a balance in learning, because education is more than just a curriculum of traditional academic subjects. Weencourage participation by promoting a variety of physical, social and academic activitiesto engage students. Mount Scopus Year 9 students are ready for the challenge.

My first SiddurThere was an air of excitement aroundour junior campuses recently, when Year1 students received their first siddurimduring special Siddur Presentationceremonies. A week earlier their parentshad come to school to design anddecorate the covers, using an array ofJewish symbols, plenty of glitter andfabric paint. Each book was lovinglyinscribed with wishes and hopes by theparents to their child.

These ceremonies were more than justreceiving a precious gift. They were acelebration of learning that our studentsbegan on their first day of kindergartenand will stay with them for the rest oftheir lives.

Adam Segal, Head of Primary JewishStudies explains, “It is knowing that ourchildren can go into any synagoguearound the world and be able to readfrom a siddur and identify with othermembers of our Jewish community”.

Farewell DorothyDorothy Stones recently retired after anamazing three decades at Scopus.

Dorothy was a vital part of thefundraising office – long before itassumed the fancier title ofDevelopment.

She started at Scopus long beforecomputers, electronic databases, Excelspreadsheets, even photocopying, before mobile phones, digital imagesand before faxes, let alone emails.

She has known four Principals, fourCollege Presidents, many ‘bosses’,numerous appeal chairmen and endlessPresentation Balls. Dorothy knew manyof our younger parents, volunteers andstaff from their school days.

Over the years she had maintaineddatabases, supported CollegeExecutives and been a constant sourceof information, support andencouragement for colleagues.

We thank Dorothy for her many, manyyears of service and incredible loyaltyand wish her a long, happy and healthyretirement.

Sharing their SimchaThe College continues to receive withgratitude donations marking specialSimchas in the lives of our supporters.

Thank you to the family and friends ofHannah Gersh, who generouslydonated to the College on the occasionof Hannah’s Bat Mitzvah.

We are also grateful to the family andfriends of Lisl Henenberg, who kindlydonated to the College on the occasionof her 80th birthday.

Mazal Tov and thank you to all oursupporters.

Preserving Scopus’historyAs a result of the Founders and Friendsevent earlier this year, a volunteercommittee, coordinated by HelenSynman, will commence the task ofauditing, cataloguing and storing ourarchives.

Lunchtime FitnessIn early October, the first meeting of theGandel Besen House fitness club sawstudents from Prep to Year 3 able toattend lunchtime fitness sessions threetimes a week.

Fitness activities like power walking, skipping, circuit exercises and gamesencourage our children to be physicallyactive and hopefully to associateplaytime with physical activity.

The fitness club will provide an incentivefor children to gain ideas on how theycan arrange their own fitness or exerciseactivities outside of school.
