The day has been celebrated since the early 17th century. It commemorates (gedenken) Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and 17 March is his traditional death date, which is why St Patrick's Day is celebrated on this day.
