    ST. PATRICK

St. Patricks Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provinc ialholiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

St. Patrick's Day honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland . St.Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17. This date wasnot the day St. Patrick was born but the day he died inthe year 461AD.

At the age of 16, he was sold as a slave by a group of

Irish that raided his village. During his captivity, hebecame closer to God.

He escaped from slavery after six years and went to amonastery for a period of twelve years. During histraining he became aware that his calling was to convertthe pagans to Christianity. He traveled throughout

Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools

and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to

Christianity. He died on March 17 in AD 461.

That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.

    TRADITIONS

People wear green in memory of Ireland, the Emerald Isle .

One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. St.Patrick used it in his sermons to represent how theFather, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist

as separate elements of the same entity. Hisfollowers adopted the custom of wearing ashamrock on his feast day.

Other traditional icon is the Leprechaun. Theyare also very famous inIreland. Leprechauns are little make-believe fairies thatlive in Ireland. They are the shoemakers for the fairies. The story is that if you catch one you can make him tellyou where he hides his gold.

According to legend, St. Patrick used the

shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain

The first St. Patricks Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in the United Sates.

Irish soldiers marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their

Today, people celebrate the day with parades , wearing green, and drinking beer. Onereason St. Patrick's Day might have become so popular is that it takes place just a

Be prepared to toast on St. Patrick's Day

For all those who were wondering what to say on March 17th, when they raise their

glasses, here are a few phrases to remember:

May you be in heaven one half hour before the devil knows you're dead.

There are many good reasons for drinking,

One has just entered my head,

If a man doesn't drink when he's living,

How the hell can he drink when he's dead?

Here's to you as good as you are,Here's to me as bad as I am,

    As good as you are,

And as bad as I am,

I'm as good as you are,

    As bad as I am.

    May your neighbors respect you,

    Troubles neglect you,

    The angels protect you,

    And Heaven accept you.

An old Irish recipe for longevity:

    Leave the table hungry.

    Leave the bed sleepy.

    Leave the bar thirsty.
