BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY

Friday, March 23, 2012, 7:30 p.m.Scottsdale Civic Center

Amphitheater Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present an outdoor concert by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Friday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater. Known to legions of fans as “America’s favorite little big band,” Big Bad Voodoo Daddy rocketed to stardom with their breakthrough performance in the 1996 film Swingers and has since become one of the most popular bands on the road today. The seven-man ensemble forged a massively successful fusion of classic American sounds from jazz, swing, Dixieland and big-band music, building their own songbook of original dance tunes with hits like Go Daddy-O and You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby). Having helped launch the swing revival of the 1990s, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy now carries on the tradition of America’s legendary big bands and orchestras by touring non-stop, performing more than 100 concerts each year for enthusiastic audiences around the world. The band’s toe-tapping music has appeared in more than 60 movies and television shows, and their career milestones have included an appearance in the Super Bowl half-time show and performances for three American presidents. The band’s recent album, How Big Can You Get: A Tribute to Cab Calloway, captures the essence of an American icon in a rowdy celebration of musicianship, mischief, genius, street smarts and fun. Seating is not provided in Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater so attendees should bring a blanket or low-rise lawn chair. Picnic foods and beverages are available for cash purchase. Pets and outside food and beverages may not be brought into the Amphitheater grounds. Gates open at 6 p.m. General-admission tickets for the lawn are available for $34 through www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or the Patron Services Box Office at (480) 499-TKTS (8587).

Bingo is still alive and well and played by all ages. Bingo may not be the fastest way to generate a win, but the jackpots are large and the cost to play is still low. Daily Jackpots are usually around $2500 but there are some places in Las Vegas that have Jackpots of $20,000 or more.

This new service began in February. The shuttle departs from Talking Stick Resort making connections at Scott-sdale Fashion Square, The W Hotel and Scottsdale Quarter. “Exceptional guest service has been a crucial element in making Talking Stick Resort the success that it is,” said Peter Arceo, senior director of sales and marketing for Talking Stick Resort. “In order to maintain that status, we continually seek out new ways to please our loyal guests and create new ones. The Lucky Express is another innovation we have created to enhance our service.” The Lucky Express runs Monday - Sun-

day, from 4pm - midnight. Each round-trip is expected to take no more than 40 minutes. The shuttle seats 30, and is open to all guests of Talking Stick Resort and to anyone looking to visit the property for a night-on-the-town. To take advantage of the shuttle, a voucher is needed when departing the resort. Vouchers are free to all members of the Player Rewards Club, and membership to the club is always free. The first stop is the W Hotel, located near Old Town Scottsdale on Camelback Road, followed by Scott-sdale’s famous high-end shopping mall Fashion Square. Afterward, the shuttle will head back to the resort and then travel to Scottsdale’s latest shopping destination, the Scottsdale Quarter, conveniently located across from Kierland Commons.

Reviewers’ Roundtable

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

‘21 Jump Street’

Two cops (Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum) must confront their teenage angst all over again when they go under cover as high school students. (R – 110 minutes)

Randy: “For a Hollywood remake, ‘21 Jump Street’ is pretty entertaining. Is it an award contender? No. But, it certainly delivers in the entertainment category and has no problem poking fun at itself, or the genre. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are a great duo and deliver too many laughs to men-tion. The cameos are a great touch. Overall, it is a heck of a wild ride. It is a far cry from the television show I remember, but who cares?” Grade: B

Joseph: “Despite outward appear-ances and personal preconceived notions, ‘21 Jump Street’ is hilarious, heartfelt and action-packed. Granted, the new movie, which is based on the television series that ran from 1987

to 1991, requires a little extra effort to suspend one’s disbelief due to its consistently over-the-top antics. However, it beats the odds with play-ful performances from Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and dynamic direc-tion by Phil Lord and Chris Miller to become one of the most well-round-edly entertaining motion pictures released thus far this year.” Grade: B

‘Being Flynn’

As he struggles to define his own life, a young writer (Paul Dano) encoun-ters his estranged father (Robert De Niro), whom he has not seen in 18 years. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 102 minutes)

Stan: “Based on Nick Flynn’s 2004 memoir and another indie film from Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Productions with De Niro also starring and Paul Dano’s captivating portrayal, ‘Being Flynn’is a stark revealing testament to the will power and tenacity of the author as well as a psychologically motivating blueprint for all of us, no matter what the age, for coping with family issues of acceptance and reconciliation.” Grade: B

Joseph: “Writer/director Paul Weitz’s new drama ‘Being Flynn’ excels at extracting emotion because it is so grounded in reality. That is to say that you will not find any feigned happy endings in the new movie, which is based on Nick Flynn’s 2004 memoir. Instead, all you get is the cold, hard truth – and, of course, a trio of terrific performances from Robert De Niro, Paul Dano and Olivia Thirl-by. However, it is in Weitz’s decision to tell it like it is that the flick is both dreadfully depressing and amazingly ameliorative – especially for anyone with parental problems.” Grade: B

‘Casa de mi Padre’

All hell breaks loose when the most feared drug lord (Gael García Bernal) in Mexico declares war on a rancher (Will Ferrell) and his family (Diego Luna and Genesis Rodriguez). (R – 84 minutes)

Stan: “Reminded of the ‘B’ movies of old with shades of the spaghetti western genre under the sure hand of director Matt Piedmont, this tale of greed, lust, and sibling rivalry is cleverly presented with those finer film noir nuances, including obvious

Srear-projection for driving and horse-back riding sequences, melodramatic death scenes, over the top dramatic confrontations, and, with an all Span-ish speaking cast with star Will Far-rell actually speaking the language through the entire film, ‘Casa de mi Padre’ is a pleasant surprise and perfect for that afternoon matinee comedic break.” Grade: C+

Joseph: “Will Ferrell’s latest comedy ‘Casa de mi Padre’ is mucho amus-ingismo. Or something like that. The new motion picture, which is a parody of Mexican telenovelas complete with Spanish spoken language, is rousingly entertaining. However, by the final act, the novelty of it all is staler than a bag of expired tortillas. This could have easily been avoided had screen-writer Andrew Steele crafted a story that not only succeeded as satire but also as a legitimate entry in the genre.” Grade: C

‘The FP’

In a small California town, rival gangs battle for control of their turf via Beat-Beat Revolution video game dance contests. Playing exclusively at AMC Arizona Center 24 and AMC Westgate 20. (R – 88 minutes)

Joseph: “‘The FP’ is mad-whack and that stuff is straight-up for reals. Writers/directors Brandon and Jason Trost’s frantically paced parody film set in the weird world of dance video game battles is as much a comic masterpiece as it is a relevant anecdote about loyalty. In spite of its intentional absurdity, the story’s basic message about ‘rolling together and dying together’ is not lost in the laughs. Then again, I may have just bought into the madness too much as a result of being so extremely enter-tained.” Grade: B

‘Jeff Who Lives at Home’*

A 30-year-old slacker (Jason Segel) finds his true destiny while helping his brother (Ed Helms) stalk the lat-ter’s possibly adulterous wife (Judy Greer). Susan Sarandon also stars. (R – 83 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘Sedona’

Visitors to the mystical town of Se-dona encounter eccentric characters and a series of calamities that lead

them to unexpected miracles. (NR – 90 minutes)

Stan: “With the air of a travelogue, intertwining stories, and off-centered characterizations, I was reminded of the quirky television series ‘Twin Peaks’ and the town where everyone knows everyone and nothing is what it seems, this film certainly adds to the mysterious persona of ‘Sedona’, the city nicely nestled high in the mountains of Arizona.” Grade: C

Joseph: “As nice of a place Sedona is to visit, imagine what wonders would await you on a daily basis if you lived there. The same could be said for film-maker Tommy Stovall’s new ‘dram-edy’ titled after the town. ‘Sedona’ succeeds in its attempt to lure the viewer in with quirky characters and spiritual themes but one cannot help but think it would have all worked a bit better as a television series. After all, the production values are quite low and the simultaneous stories – while acutely inspirational – are not nearly as significant as a bout on the big screen deserves.” Grade: C

‘Seeking Justice’*

A stranger approaches high-school teacher Will Gerard (Nicolas Cage) and promises to help him get revenge for a brutal attack on his wife (Janu-ary Jones). Guy Pierce also stars. (R – 105 minutes)

*Not made available for review.

‘Undefeated’

With the help and encouragement of their new coach, the Manassas Tigers from Tennessee strive to win the first playoff game in their high school’s 110-year history. (PG-13 – 113 min-utes)

Stan: “The familiarity of the theme of inspiration of the less fortunate to succeed is more than aptly pre-

sented in this Oscar® winner in the Best Documentary category this year and wears a bit thin throughout the film. A redeeming factor is the central focus of Coach Bill Courtney with magnetic screen appeal as he tire-lessly motivates his football players with the will to want to win against all odds while reminding me of my gym-nastics coach with the line ‘Football reveals character, whether than builds it’, is a worthy lesson for contempla-tion.” Grade: C

Joseph: “Having only seen one of the other films nominated for Best Documentary during this year’s Acad-emy Awards, one can only wonder how bad the competition must have been with ‘Undefeated’ claiming the crown. That is to say that the new football flick barely even crosses the 50-yard line much less manages a touchdown. Granted, filmmakers Daniel Lindsay and T.J. Martin have crafted a fair reflection of inspiring the uninspired but we have been here and done this before. And at least those times we were not forced to endure the ridiculous ramblings of (wannabe life) Coach Bill Courtney.” Grade: D

Soundbite Spotlight

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly En-tertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Director Matt Piedmont (‘Casa de mi Padre’)

By Stan Robinson

“In this film, you’ve got one of the number one movie stars in the world, Will Farrell. If you’re a fan of cinema, this movie has a great, emotional, fun story - and underneath – it’s a fun time at the movies. So if you want to have the experience of a true fun time at the movies, that isn’t what you’d normally expect, then this movie is for you!

I’m going to answer your question so that you’ll be able to sleep nights [with a chuckle!] and no we didn’t use ADR for Will’s lines and that was the trick we wanted to pull off! It was all Will speaking Spanish, we had a dialect coach, he had to learn that days shooting and he’s speaking in a northern Mexican ranch accent, that’s all Will! We wanted to be able to say with all sincerity that it wasn’t overdubbed, it wasn’t someone else’s voice, and present the answer to the question ‘Can Will Farrell act while speaking Spanish’ which is almost an impossibility and he managed to pull it off brilliantly.

Will likes to challenge himself and we like to challenge Will because we knew he could do it! We called it the ‘24 day fever dream’ because we had 24 days to shoot it. Will would pat himself on the back for finishing a day, and then start to get a panic going just knowing the next day was coming up and he’d have to do it all over again!” – Matt Piedmont

Bonus Features

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly En-tertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD.

‘My Week with Marilyn’

By Joseph J. Airdo

In director Simon Curtis’s “My Week with Marilyn,” Eddie Redmayne plays a production assistant who introduces Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Wil-liams) to the pleasures of the British countryside during the filming of “The Prince and the Showgirl.” Kenneth Branaugh co-stars as that film’s director Sir Laurence Olivier.

“My biggest job was to cast it right. Getting icons like Marilyn and Olivier right was a tall order but I felt in very safe hands with Michelle and Ken – two of the smartest, most talented actors around. I was so lucky to get them because – in the case of these parts, given that they were a very specific age and had to have the right look – there were short lists. But both Michelle and Ken were on the top of my lists so I was very grateful to get them both.” – Simon Curtis

“When playing Laurence Olivier, you are filling big shoes. People have plenty of examples – films, documen-taries and photographs – to compare and contrast so there is a long way to fall. To have been recognized with a nomination by the Academy (of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) – a group that cherishes the work of Oli-ver – was such an honor, a pleasure and also a relief that people felt we had not in any way failed to acknowl-edge the man’s extraordinary talent.” – Kenneth Branaugh

FINDING THE FUNNY & THE FACTS IN MONEY

WHAT IS THE U.S. DOLLAR REALLY WORTH?

ONE WOULD THINK THE ANSWER IS STRAIGHTFORWARD,

THE RESULT OF A STANDARD CALCULATION, HOWEVER, IT IS

ANYTHING BUT.

Prior to 1971 the US Dollar was backed by Gold and Silver and

other hard assets that provided the strength behind the currency. After

1971 the dollar was no longer backed by any hard assets and became a flat currency. As a flat currency the value

of a US Dollar is therefore worth what the government decrees it is worth. It is the Legal Tender Laws that give US Currency its value otherwise it would

be worth only what it actually costs to make – 6.4¢ per bill.

US Bills are actually made with a combination of linen and cotton, not

paper. This is why you can wash a dollar bill and it won’t fall apart. 97%

of all paper money contains traces of cocaine. As an anti-counterfeiting device a small plastic strip is inserted into all US Bills. The strip has written

on it the denomination of the note and is located in different places on different bills. Also when you shine a UV light on the bill the strip will

glow depending on its denomination. $5 bill glows blue * $10 bill glows

orange * $20 bill glows green * $50 bill glows yellow * $100 bill glows

red. In 1960, the Federal Reserve had

$177.41 in cash circulating for every person living in the US. In 1990,

that amount increased to $1,062.86 per capita. On the $100 bill, the

that particular time was chosen”

If you had $10 billion and spent $1 every second of every day, it would take 317 years for you to go broke.

A world record of $2,255,000 was paid in December 2006 for an 1890 $1000 United States

Treasury note. You’d need to fold a bill of any denomination about 8,000 times (first forward and

then backwards) before it will tear. Most people save $2 bills, thinking

they are rare and therefore valuable; they’re actually worth… $2.

The number 13 (corresponding to the 13 colonies) figures prominently on the $1 bill. The number of letters/

digits in 1776 (4) and its Roman Numeral equivalent MDCCLXXVI (9) adds up to 13. The dollar has 13 stars above the eagle. There are 13 steps on the Pyramid. There are 13 letters in ANNUIT COEPTIS. E PLURIBUS

UNUM contains 13 letters. There are 13 vertical bars on the shield. The top of the shield has 13 horizontal stripes. You can count 13 leaves on

the olive branch. There are 13 berries on the olive branch. The dollar bill

also features 13 arrows and 13 hats. If you could double your money every year for 20 years in a row (highly unlikely, just one dollar would turn into more than one

million ($1,048,576). More realistically, if you invested your

money at 8% from age 25 to age 65, just $3,900 per year would turn into more than one million ($1,010,320). That means it only takes about $325 a month to become a millionaire. It is illegal to put coins in your ears in Hawaii. If you drive 10 miles to buy a lottery ticket, you are more likely to die in a car accident than to win the lottery. If you leave an unpaid balance on a credit card charging

18% interest, the amount you owe will double in just four years and

three months. Starting in 2006, it cost the United State Mint more

than one cent to produce each penny and more than five cents to produce each nickel, due to rising commodity

prices. (GENIUS).

Irish Republic St. Patrick’s Day Festival promises live entertainment,

traditional Irish food, beer and games in Downtown Chandler on March 17th

beginning at noon.

Irish Republic is coloring downtown Chandler green for Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival on March 17: green beer, green leprechauns, green shamrocks and plenty of green cheer. More than double the party space from previous years will draw thousands of patrons celebrating at AJ Chandler Park (west) with green as far as the eye can see.

The Festival starts at noon and continues until 2 a.m. With Irish eyes smiling, party revelers will enjoy a bounty of Irish good fortune with games, live entertainment, flow of green beer, Jameson-enhanced Irish coffee and the perfect pint of Guinness. Irish themed games include cabbage bowling, beer pong, bean bag toss, a dunk-the-leprechaun tank and more.

Irish Republic celebrates the Valley’s best ode to Ireland with live entertainment infused with bag pipers, Irish dancers and activities for the family to enjoy. And what Paddy celebration is complete without music to dance a jig too? A lineup packed with contemporary and Celtic delights includes Take Cover from 2-2:30 p.m., Ocotillo Dance Center from 2:30-3 p.m., and bagpiper Mike Mercier from 3-5:30 p.m. Once the sun goes down, rockin’ performances include Kung Fu Grip from 6-8 p.m. and the Insomniacs from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Finally, DJ Hanzerelli will cap off

the night spinning festive beats from 10:30 p.m. – 2 a.m.

For 30 years of his life, St. Patrick brought hope to Ireland by establishing churches and monasteries across the country. The day of his death, March 17, 461 A.D., has since been a day for the Irish to celebrate the saint for converting the pagans to Christianity: essentially driving the snakes from Ireland. Over the centuries, the celebration has spread to become a worldwide event. In America, where there are more people of Irish descent than in Ireland itself, St. Patrick’s Day has become a cultural icon and across the world Irish and non-Irish alike join the party. Irish Republic in Chandler continues that fine Irish tradition.

General admission to the Irish Republic St. Patrick’s Day Festival is $10, presale tickets will be available for $8 and designated drivers will get in for $5. For an extra special treat, opt for the $40 VIP access ticket which includes general admission, all access lanyard, exclusive entry into VIP area with catered food and treats, no lines and access to private restrooms.

From noon-5 p.m. all ages are welcome to enjoy the Irish Republic St. Patrick’s day Festival; however, the event will be 21-and-over after 5 p.m. Children 12-years-old and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. A portion of the proceeds from the Irish Republic St. Patrick’s Day Festival will benefit Chandler Fire Honor Guard/ Pipes and Drums.

Open since 2008, Irish Republic Public House (formerly Murphy’s Law) is a friendly neighborhood people’s bar offering 35 beers on draft and 20 brands of bottled beer. The menu features local favorite dishes like fish and chips, meatball bangers, delicious hamburgers and fully loaded nachos. The service staff

adorn black kilts with logo tanks and high black socks for a dramatic, bold and sexy look. Irish Republic is located at 58 South San Marcos Place, Chandler, AZ 85225. For more information visit www.irishrepublicaz.com. You can also follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/irishrepublicpublichouse.

(SORT OF) NEW CULINARY EVENT

SIZZLES IN SCOTTSDALE THIS SPRING

AZ Wine & Dine’s First Annual Culinary Showcase coming to

Scottsdale Quarter Thursday, April 12th 2012 / 5-8pm

A new culinary event, with a very familiar feel, is being held at Scottsdale Quarter on April 12, 2012. AZ Wine & Dine’s first annual culinary showcase is being hosted by the Arizona Lodging & Tourism Association, who co-hosted Forks & Corks for the past eight years.

Held every April on a Thursday evening, this unique culinary event targets executive foodies for what’s been called a “happy hour on steroids”. Designed to highlight the distinct variety of culinary outlets at Arizona hotels and resorts, AZ Wine & Dine will also feature top restaurants found at Scottsdale Quarter and also

offers a wide variety of wines and craft beers.

The new location of Scottsdale Quarter was selected for the refreshed culinary event to provide a more intimate atmosphere with a more luxurious focus and that concept has already helped the event to attract the state’s most notable hotel and resort chefs including: Food Network Star, Beau MacMillan from The Sanctuary Resort, Lee Hillson from T.Cooks at the Royal Palms, Michael Cairns from Montelucia, Mel Mecinas from Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North, as well as The Phoenician, Fairmont Scottsdale

Princess, Westin Kierland, Different Pointe of View, Tanzy, the new SOL Mexican Cantina and many more.

AZ Wine & Dine will feature 20 booths offering culinary samples paired with complementing wines courtesy of Alliance Beverage and Young’s Market and craft beers hosted by Hensley Beverage Company. Live music from the Shining Star Band and a silent auction with amazing deals on vacation packages, dinners, sports and music memorabilia and more will also add excitement. Visit www.AZWineAndDine.com for more information.

Veg options include items like“TLT” tempeh, lettuce, tomato, avocado and vegenaise on whole grain bread $10 and Gluten Free Cheese Ravioli $15 made with roasted squash, brussels sprouts and parmesan mushroom broth.

Cocktails go green in both alcoholic and virgin alternatives. The Natural is made with fresh ginger, agave and soda $4. Looking for something a little stronger? BEER! SECTIO

N So St. Patrick’s Day is coming and you are looking for something a little different than the same old beer that everybody else is drinking…maybe something fun and exciting but still with that St. Patrick’s Day feel to it. Have we got some suggestions for you!

First, let’s talk Killian’s Irish Red. What’s that you say? Killian’s falls into the same old category? Not so fast because Killian’s has reinvented itself in a big way. You may know that Killian’s is one of the oldest brands in the world with the original recipe dating back to the 1860’s. In 1981 Coors Brewing introduced George Killian’s beer to the United States. It caught on immediately. In the early 1980’s craft brewing was just starting to catch on and people embraced flavors that were different from the pale lagers they had been drinking. However, the recipe was not quite as authentic as it could have been. The beer was a little sweeter than the 1860 version. The folks at Coors are turning back the dial and releasing a new

version of Killian’s that goes to show that everything comes back around again. The recipe update results in a rich roasted, full-bodied, well-balanced lager that maintains the signature ruby red color, but now is much closer to the original beer brewed in Enniscorthy, Ireland.

“George Lett brewed a beer for his friends, and it’s our friends we have in mind as we reintroduce the new look and taste of George Killian’s Irish Red,” said Katie Cowan, Killian’s brand manager. “This is a more robust, more complex lager, but still balanced and easy to drink with friends. It goes great with a wide variety of popular pub food, like wings, burgers and fish and chips.” But you say you still want a stout for St. Patrick’s Day? Okay, we have three in mind for you. First up is the newly canned Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout from

Anderson Valley. Released in green cans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this is the same deep, rich, dark oatmeal stout that Anderson Valley has always made and the bronze medal winner at the 2010 World Beer cup. Named after the Boontling (a unique dialect spoken in the Boonville area) name for Hendy Woods State Park, a deep redwood forrest with a tree canopy so thick it can seem like nighttime at high noon, this beer lives up to its namesake.

Have it by itself, with dessert or as dessert or have it with your corned beef and cabbage. No matter what it will make your St. Patrick’s Day special.

Legend has it that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, chasing them into the sea after the attacked him during a fast he was undertaking on top of a hill. Modern science suggests that this story is probably not true as there is no evidence that there ever were snakes on Ireland. Regardless, the fine folks at Lakefront, most famous for New Grist, their award winning Gluten Free beer, release Snake Chaser Stout annually. This velvety stout pours black with a creamy tan head. Toffee and coffee aromas in this hearty ale are perfectly balanced. Lightly hopped,

the flavor is full of the roasted malts and finishes with very low sweetness. A

NDAMN THE TORPEDOS! by “King” James Swann

Hello Again Beer Lovers, after a much needed week off, I’m back to chat about Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA in Cans. Yes you heard right, in the Can! As I’m sure you know by now, Sierra Nevada is huge on sustainability utilizing 10,000 plus solar panels and Hydrogen Fuel Cells to help power their brewery. Canning takes their Green Ethic even one step further. Yes, you have heard me preaching the beer can gospel in articles past but Did You Know: Cans are lighter, tougher and much easier to ship than bottles? This reduces their Carbon Footprint over bottles by a fairly large margin. Even more important, the beer stays bright and fresh longer in the can. Nuff Said right?

Ok, Damn the Torpedoes and let’s drink some beer! This is a big IPA utilizing Whole Cone Hops. Pouring a bright, golden orange colour, this brew really delivers on its promise of bitterness, aroma and taste. On the nose and palate you immediately get bright citrusy characteristics followed by a piney resin sensation that makes for big mouthfeel and bold flavour. The name Torpedo comes from Sierra’s own revolutionary method of dry-hopping. Designed, built and debuted at the brewery, the “Torpedo” is a sleek, stainless-steel piece of hardware used to deliver big floral hop aroma and taste.Indeed, it does deliver. Don’t ya just love technology? At 7.2% ABV.and 65 IBUs this beer just crosses the line into Imperial territory, yet finishes with a crisper profile than most Imperials. The everyday Imperial? Absolutely!

Great food pairings include pizza with green peppers and spicy sausage or a loaded cheesesteak sandwich. Booze pairings include a shot of good Kentucky bourbon for sipping or a dirty martini with four olives for snacking. I know, let’s put it all together and call it a meal. Who’s with me?

As always keep sending those comments and questions to [email protected] and take it easy this week. The last couple of weeks almost killed me!

Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeverages.com

There’s a 9,000-year lease on the original Guinness breweryThat’s right, in 1759 Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on a previously unused brewery in Dublin, at the time paying about $147 down plus $66 in monthly rent. Looks like that investment worked out pretty well.

very smooth beer, it is the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day...whether you’re Irish or not. It pairs well with dark chocolate (as long as it’s not too sweet), as well as many grilled entrees, which complement the roasted flavors of the dark malts.

Of course many of you prefer that cascading beauty of a nice nitrogen stout and we have an option for you.

Left Hand makes their

incredible Milk Stout Nitro which pours out of the long black faucet with a richness other beers can only dream of. The dark sweet stout settles in the glass and releases tiny, tight nitrogen bubbles resulting in a creamy head which makes for the perfect drink. Until recently, you had to go to one of the many bars in town that offered this treat on tap, but the folks at Left Hand wanted you to be able to enjoy this at home as well. So, after years of research and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, they have recently released America’s first bottled nitrogen beer. Instead of relying on a foreign object to release the nitrogen into the beer upon opening, Left Hand has developed a method of leaving the nitrogen gas in suspension to be aroused when the bottle is opened and poured hard straight down the middle of the glass. The result is the same cascade effect that you get when you drink it on tap. The taste is spectacular either way.

So there you have it, some alternatives to the same old stuff you always drink on St. Patrick’s Day. They all go great with traditional Irish Food and they all will chase a nice glass of Irish Whiskey. Is there anything else you need for St. Patrick’s Day? How about a ride home?

SECTION “Nickel and Dimin’!” The Vine Tavern and Grille is an awe-some place for you college kids. They have the best drink specials over any other place!! They have domestic pints, well cocktails, well margaritas, and well long islands for just $2.59 all the time. As for appetizers; everything is under $6. Tostada nachos are $5 and a dozen buffalo wings are just under $6. I honestly have a lot of friends that come to this place. It is a college town kind of place, so the party there is definitely a handful of fun. Definitely a low key kind of place, but worth your time if you want some cheap fun. 801 E. Apache Blvd. Tempe, AZ “Go to Your Happy Place” I always love going places that have a great mixture of people, and Bobby’s Latin Lounge is definitely one of those spots. Their happy hour is during the week and begins at 4pm. $2 imports, $3 imports/wines and half off appetiz-ers are not a bad call when you’re just getting off work. Can’t forget about their complimentary buffet either during their happy hour offerings, it is simply awesome! This place can get a little crazy at night, but it’s pretty low key during the day. I love the music and I feel like everyone that comes to this place is someone that I would wanna hangout with. Then again; I get along with most people and like to make everyone my friend! 8501 N. 27th Ave. Phoenix, AZ www.facebook.com/carrie.gurule

On the subject of tribute bands, one of the best in the Valley is an Eagles tribute called Take It To The Limit. They’ll be back at the Skye Restaurant and Lounge (16844 N. Arrowhead Fountain Center Drive in Peoria) on Saturday March 17th and always play to sell-out crowds. They are playing two shows; 6pm and 8:30pm. Visit www.skye-restaurant.com or call (623) 334-0100 for more information or to purchase tickets.

Irish or not, there’s something for everyone this weekend. Arguably one of the biggest parties this weekend will be at Tempe Beach Park! Starting at 1pm on Saturday March 17th, the music lasts all day with Flogging Molly, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss, Suedehead, Brothers of Brazil, Inept Hero, Halocene, Black Bottom Lighters, Westcott Avenue and The Wiley One. Tickets can be purchased at www.luckymanonline.com. Tempe Beach Park is located at 54 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at Rosie McCaffrey’s Arrrrr where’s me gold?! Oh those funny mischievous sprites are always looking for a jackpot. Wait, so are pirates. Is there a connection between leprechauns and pirates? How about a little man dressed in green, with one squinty eye, looking for gold at the bottom of a rainbow. No? Perhaps pirates just have Irish accents in my world. Either way, one thing’s for sure, pirates and leprechauns love beer (uh, yeah, that’s a fact). Hooray for St. Patty’s day in bringing all us pirates, leprechauns, and unadventurous folk together to drink Irish cream, whiskey, and Guinness all day Saturday. It’s a beautiful thing to see everyone wearing olive, jade, pea green, and other shades of emerald while being merry with random bar mates all in celebration of an Irish holiday. What better place to be Irish for a day than at Phoenix’s best Irish pub, Rosie McCaffrey’s. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is by far the best Irish bar in the state. In fact (for serious this time), Seamus McCaffrey himself will be Phoenix’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade’s Grand Marshal this year. This should tell you that the man knows what he’s doing and the desert’s Irish people are well aware of his authenticity as an Irish man, so his pub is bound to be craic. The festivities start at 7 am with 98.7 The Peak broadcasting live from this uptown bar along with 3 live bands playing throughout the day. Vinyl Station will be performing from 9 am – 2 pm, Aaron Ricker Band from 3 – 5, and The Sullivans from 6 – 11. Hear the sounds of bag pipes and rock music bounce off the wooden rafters and paneled walls of this two story pub and feel lucky until 3 am. Saturday, March 17th. 7 am – 3 am. 906 East Camelback Road. $10. Ages 21+

CASPA at School of Rock Before the weekend brings in all the Irish wannabes and short guys that love to pass for leprechauns, School of Rock will present us all with London dubstep master, Caspa. His association with dubstep champion, Rusko, when they created the album, FabricLive.37, launched him into UK stardom. Caspa is also known for his remix of rap star Ludacris’s “How low can you go,” making him the first dubstep DJ to remix a leading American rapper’s song. His mixes get millions of plays on YouTube and his bass drops move people into sweating fits on the dance floor. Although not the biggest or classiest club in town, School of Rock is surprisingly fun when they bring in the right DJs, which they have been doing for their UK Thursdays. On these nights, the club rocks out to dubstep, glitch, and drum and bass for all the Tempe electro heads so expect the dancing to look a lot different than what you’d see on “Get Ya’ Freak On Fridays.” Don’t get me wrong, freaky Fridays are fun too but if you want some extra bass to jumpstart your heart for an event-filled St. Patty’s weekend, listening to bump and grind music probably won’t do it. Thursday, March 15th. 9 pm – 2 am. 411 S. Mill Ave. Tickets: $15 @http://www.sletickets.com/. Ages 18+

We get you and your car home safely.

Drinking and driving is 100% preventable.
