STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for

we all partake of the one bread.” 1 CORINTHIANS 10:17

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and in-

vite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being

grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold pur-

pose. One, it helps build God’s kingdom here on earth. Two,

it is a road map to Heaven. Let’s help each other get there!

Prayer of the Faithful

That we answer God’s call to build his kingdom on earth and

help each other get to Heaven!

Hungry Grouches Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16a

How do you act when you get hungry? If dinner is late or service

is slow, are you known for your patience?

Moses told the people that God made them hungry in the desert

to find out how they would handle it. Would they still keep the

commandments even when they were hungry?

Imagine being judged on how you acted when you were hungry.

Most of us would want to be judged in other circumstances: on

those occasions when we helped our neighbor, when we gave a

generous gift, or surprised someone with a compliment. But how

we act when we are hungry? That is not fair.

In reality, we are hungry all the time. We hunger for justice, for

love, for faith, and for community. We hunger for deeper union

with the God who made us. If God wonders how we behave

when we are hungry, the evidence mounts up every moment of

every day.

The manna that God sent to the desert fed hungry bellies, and the

word that God spoke through Moses fed hungry spirits. If people

responded in gratitude, they pleased God.

When we gather for Eucharist, God’s word forms us and God’s

food feeds us. If we respond in gratitude, we please God.

Family Perspective By Bud Ozar

Parenting is a Eucharistic activity because from the first moment

of conception children consume us, our flesh, blood, energy, time

and resources. If we don’t sacrifice ourselves, our children

would not have life. This is the priesthood of parenting. Christ is

present in this self-sacrifice.

Capping off another successful year!

It’s hard to believe but another school year has come and gone! Each year our success is possible because of everyone who lends a hand

in making St. Patrick the place it is. We couldn’t do it without you. I hope you know how grateful all of us at St. Patrick School are of

your commitment throughout the school year.

On behalf of our pastor Fr. Larry King, pastoral associate Deacon Don Sobolewski, Mrs. Townsend, and myself, we would like to offer

many thank you’s for a great 2016-17 school year. We would like to specifically thank the following:

Our school families for making the commitment to send their children to St. Patrick School. We appreciate that you are a part of our

school family and that you let us be a part of yours. This thank you extends to all our grandparents, as well.

Our top-notch teaching staff, school counselor, coaching staff and parish staff members. All of you are an integral part of our family

and we couldn’t do anything without you. Thank you for continuously going above and beyond to ensure all of our students are

cared for.

The student body for working hard both in their academics and in extracurricular activities and for serving as living examples of

their Catholic faith. We can’t wait to see how you grow and what you will achieve next school year.

The entire school support staff. We are blessed to have excellent administrative assistants who work in our school and parish office.

Their ability to multitask and accomplish so much each day never ceases to amaze me. In addition, we are blessed to have an excel-

lent maintenance and custodial staff who keep our school and grounds remarkably neat and clean. There are so many others, too

many to name, including those who work in latchkey, the lunchroom and on the playground. All of you are involved in the im-

portant task of running our parish school.

The volunteers who do so many things behind the scenes! We rely on our school board, Father Flohe Foundation, PTO, and Athletic

Association members as well as many other groups and individuals who help out at the school throughout the year.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the school or parish this year! Your financial support allows us to offer an education that

nourishes the entire mind, body, and soul of a child. You are helping us to create the future leaders of our Catholic Church and com-

munity. Thank you for your generosity!

We would like to express our gratitude to all for your trust, support, and cooperation during the school year. We are appreciative and

thankful to everyone who has anything to do with making St. Patrick School a great place to educate the children of Portland and its sur-

rounding communities. We hope that you will take time this summer to rest and enjoy the wonderful opportunity to renew body, mind,

and spirit before we begin another school year.

Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Update: Work is progressing on the renovation of the small building across the road from the east entrance to the church to transform the structure into a Eucharistic Adoration Chap-el. To date the floor has been insulated and a new subfloor installed, interior walls are framed in and the rough electri-cal has been completed. A special thank you to the mem-bers of IBEW Local 665 who volunteered their time and talent to complete the electrical work! Over the next few weeks, work will focus on exterior siding, wall and ceiling insulation and drywall. If you are interested in assisting on this project or for additional information call or text Ken Schneider at 517-643-2749, Mike Cook at 517-242-1352, or Dale Kramer at 517-526-2409.

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about the question, “What does it mean to be a practicing Catholic”? Well, in one sense, we are all “practicing” to become better Catholics and better people each day. But I’m talking about something more. The Church is very merciful. In her wisdom, she knows that we are all at different places on our journey closer to Christ. The Catechism tells us that the “necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort” (CCC 2041) is for us to keep the “five precepts”. What are the five precepts? A Catholic should:

1. Attend Mass every Sunday and each holy day of obligation. 2. Go to the Sacrament of Penance at least once per year. 3. Go to communion at least once per year, during Easter. 4. Observe the days of fasting (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) and abstinence

(Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and Fridays during Lent). 5. Provide for the needs of the Church according to their means.

In addition, a Catholic should keep the Ten Commandments to the best of their ability and assent to the teachings of the Church, including those regarding Marriage. Why does the Church impose these guidelines? We sometimes see this as a burden. Yet any parent knows that to love a child is to set boundaries and enforce rules for the good of the child. God, through His church, lovingly sets limits for His children to make us into the kind of people that He intends for us to be- which ultimately leads to our greatest happiness.
