Our parish offers many opportunities for Adoration

We certainly have come long way from the restrictions imposed on us by the coronavirus this past 15 months. But now we have another offshoot virus to contend with. The past few weeks at daily Mass, the first reading has been from one of the first five books of the Old Testament. We have been listening and reflecting on how the Jewish people were freed from slavery in Egypt and had a forty-year journey to the Promised Land. In spite of their uncertainly and panic in times of thirst and hunger, God was very patient with them. When they began their journey out of slavery, they were slow to see how patient God was with them and how present He was to them. While they did not always trust Him or see His hand, God never gave up on them. Every single day they had everything they needed not only to survive, but to live in the light of God’s light, providence, and care. In many ways the current set back with the coronavirus is challenging us like the Jewish people were challenged. While we do have all we need not only to survive but to live every day, the shadow of restrictions that include masks, social distancing, and travel restrictions loom over us. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In her we have THE example of trusting in God no matter what was happening that seemed be against His wisdom and plan for us. She had to be horrified at the death of the Holy Innocents as she, baby Jesus, and St. Joseph fled their homeland and went to Egypt. She endured one of the worst nightmares of any parent as Jesus was lost for three days and found in the Temple. What sorrow she knew as she stood at the foot of the Cross and watched her son, the Son of God, die so painfully and unjustly. Yet she never gave up hope. Her words to the angel Gabriel, “Let it be done to me as you say,” were the guiding force. Today we celebrate that she was bodily assumed into heaven. She was fully assumed into God’s life because she fully assumed Him into her life. The prayer of Jesus in the Garden on the eve of His crucifixion was the driving force in her life: “Not my will

but yours be done.” She knew at all times and in all places she was one with God and she had complete trust in His way and providence. In the fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary we reflect her as the Queen of heaven and earth. A queen has power. No king or queen, no world or national leader ever had her power. She did not always know how God’s way and will would be accomplished, but she had the inner power to trust that if she continued to believe she would see His purpose become a reality for herself and all people who believe. We got to this point in dealing with the coronavirus because we saw what needed to be done and we did it. We get through life every day with hope and purpose when we allow God’s way, light, wisdom, truth, and love to guide us. We are never alone. We don’t bemoan restrictions or paralyze ourselves with worry or fear. Assuming God into our lives through the gift of faith enables us to be all we have been created to be in whatever circumstances and situations we find ourselves. As we seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we have her faith to trust in God and to know our faithfulness to Him opens our minds and hearts to His faithful love, mercy, and wisdom in all we say, do, hear, and think. I offer the Hail Holy Queen prayer for spiritual nourishment.. Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

While pandemic restrictions have eased, many on Long Island are still suffering from its effects - physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. One of the ways we can assist our neighbors and the Church is through giving to the Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). For all of you who have given to the CMA in the past, thank you. Your gifts have helped bring the loving face of Jesus to hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders. Each year, the CMA creates pathways of faith that guide all people to our loving Father. This year, the CMA needs your help, more now than ever before, in our efforts to spread the Good News throughout Long Island. Last year was a challenge for everyone. As the pandemic surged through our Long Island community, pastoral care was expanded to those in need. Catholic Charities programs expanded its food programs to seniors and our parish outreach programs remained open; the Education Department was able to provide internet service to families that did not have it so that children could continue their studies and parents could continue to work; Faith Formation, Young Adult Ministry and Youth Ministry programs were able to remotely bring the faith to God’s people. All of this was accomplished because of your support and prayers. Please consider giving to the CMA so that we can make this year’s Appeal grow substantially in gifts, so that everyone who comes to the Church for help may receive it. Additionally, the CMA helps raise funds that help feed the poor, clothe the naked, and assist our veterans and people with disabilities. The CMA also assists women with untimely pregnancies who need assistance and seminarians who are following God’s call to the priesthood. Our parish will also receive a share of the funds if we reach at least 80% of our parish goal; the more money our parish raises, the more we will receive in rebates. Whatever you give, thank you for helping to create pathways of faith on Long Island. May God bless you, your family and this year’s CMA.

Donations of school supplies and gift certificates for new school clothes will be gratefully accepted at Parish Outreach. Many of our parishioners find September a burden financially. The following is a list of some of the supplies needed by children who attend Smithtown School District: 3” hard cover binders, plastic pocket folders, dry erase markers, backpacks, large glue sticks, scissors, post-it notes, highlighters, dividers for binders, markers, colored pencils. At this time, we do not have a need for notebooks. Thank you for caring. Any parishioners who find it difficult to purchase school supplies for their children are welcome to take advantage of this program. Feel free to call or stop by the Outreach office – (631)265-2668.

Just a reminder: The first day of school in Smithtown is Thursday, September 9th!

Successful gardeners often produce more than their family can possibly use. If that is the case for you, please keep our Parish Outreach Food Pantry in mind. Fresh vegetables are a welcome addition to the tables of those struggling financially. Donations can be dropped off at our Outreach office between the hours of 9:30 and 2:30 PM Monday through Friday, or at the rectory main office during rectory hours.

Cherish a Senior Gift Bags Many thanks to all those who donated items or complete gift bags as part of the “Cherish a Senior” project. With your help we were able to donate more than 50 bags to Catholic Charities. The gift bags will be distributed to parishes or programs that serve seniors and those that are lonely. We also send a special thank you to the staff members and campers at St. Patrick Camp who assembled the bags for us and St. Catherine’s Hospital for their generous donation. Receiving these beautiful gift bags will remind our seniors that they are loved and remembered. God bless you for caring!

Grief Support Groups and Covid-19 Support Groups for Children and Young People through Saint Patrick’s Parish Outreach

Summer is here, and we are hoping you and your loved ones are enjoying all of the wonderful experiences this beautiful time of year has to offer. The past year has been a difficult one for everyone, but it has been especially devastating for some members of our parish community. In response to a year of many losses, Parish Outreach would like to begin our Rainbows for All Children grief support program in mid-October. These peer support groups, led by trained facilitators, are for children and young people who have experienced a loss due to a death, a divorce or separation, a deployment, an incarceration or other trauma. The Rainbows program offers small peer support groups, according to age, for children in Kindergarten through Grade 8. The Spectrum program offers small peer support groups for students in high school and for students in college. In addition, Rainbows for All Children is offering the newly revised Silver Linings, a Community Crisis Program, to address the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on children and young people. Silver Linings is also a peer support program and is structured in the same way as Rainbows. If there is a need in our parish community, Parish Outreach would like to offer this program as well. If there is a child in your family that is in elementary, middle school, high school or college and would benefit from any of these programs, please contact Saint Patrick’s Parish Outreach at (631) 265-2668 or email us at [email protected] with the subject line, Rainbows for All Children. Be sure to include all your contact information. In order for us to plan and staff the programs and to help as many children as possible, please respond by August 6th. Be sure to tell us the program you are interested in and the ages of the children or young people who would be participating. Special Note: There is a possibility that a seven-week session of the Silver Linings Covid-19 Community Response Program could begin as soon as September if there is a more immediate need. If you feel that a child or young person in your family would benefit from gathering to spend time together talking and sharing their experiences and concerns sooner than our planned October 2021 start, please be sure to let us know. Thank you for taking the time to help us provide the support that is needed for our parish’s most precious gifts, our children.

Good and gracious Father, whose own Beloved Son suffered violence and death for the salvation of the world, listen graciously to our cry for all who are being persecuted for their faith. In your great mercy, comfort them with the Holy Spirit. Give them strength in the face of hostility and courage in the face of trial. Open the eyes of those who raise their hands in violence to see others as their brothers and sisters, children of the one Father of all. By your grace, turn their hearts from hatred to love. Through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Queen of Peace, may justice and peace prevail so that all may have the freedom to worship you, the one true God and him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Please pray for those persecuted for their faith.

Giving Made Easier Churches now routinely offer online giving for church donations. There are many reasons for this. Fewer people are using cash and checks. Mass attendance at your home parish is usually interrupted by vacations, business trips, illness, snow storms, and now coronavirus concerns. And many people find it easier (and greener) to not have to deal with church envelopes. St. Patrick’s offers several forms of online giving: (1) Faith Direct: Signing up for Faith Direct allows you to indicate a weekly contribution amount that is automatically withdrawn from your account. Just go to faithdirect.net or download the Faith Direct app from the App Store. Our Parish code is NY51. (2) Our website: You can contribute at any time by going to our website: stpatricksmithtown.org. Just click the “Donate” button at the top right. (3) Our Parish App: In addition to its many other features, the OneParish App has a donation page that allows quick and easy one-time or recurring donations. You can download the One Parish App at the App Store.

Where in the World is Christianity Growing and Why?

Pope Francis, in 2014, spoke in his homily about Christianity experiencing the largest numbers of martyrs today than ever before in its 2,000 year history.(1) "The world hates Christians for the same reason it hated Jesus: because He brought the light of God and the world prefers the darkness to hide its wicked works....The martyrs of today are greater in number than those of the first centuries," said Pope Francis again in 2016.(2) In 2021, the number of martyrs is even greater. Yet - despite this persecution on a massive scale, Christianity is growing faster than any time in history. Where is this happening and why? "The more you mow us down, the more numerous we grow; the blood of Christians is seed." - Tertullian, early Church theologian (155 - 220AD) In the last 100 years, the number of Christians in the world has quadrupled from about 600 million in 1910 to well past 2 billion in 2020. Christianity remains the world's largest religious group. (3) Africa and Asia, with believers in the most persecuted countries, are seeing incredible expansion of Churches while the Church in Europe and America is declining. Millions of people across Africa and Asia in historically unengaged people groups are now in rapidly growing Disciple Making Movements. In 2000, there were 6 such movements and today there are now 1,035. (4) The Status of Global Christianity data reports that between 2000-2020: * Africa had 37,825 new Christ followers each day over the last 20 years. * Latin America had 16,988 each day. * Asia had 13,443 each day. * North America had 1,999 each day. * Oceania had 473 each day. * Europe had 8 each day. Rick Hinshaw has spent the past three decades in primarily Catholic communications work: as a reporter, news editor, columnist, and for eight years editor of The Long Island Catholic; several years as co-host and co-producer of “The Catholic Forum” program on the diocesan Telecare channel; two stints as Director of Communications for the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights; and a year as Associate Director for Communications at the New York State Catholic Conference. Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.” As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

1. Some are shocked by Jesus’ teaching. Have you ever been shocked or surprised by his teachings? How did you react? 2. Jesus did not change his teaching to prevent people from leaving. When have you stood by your word even when it was not well received? 3. Describe the importance of the Eucharist in your life.

Many left Jesus at this point in his ministry. Talk about the importance to staying with Jesus even when others do not.

Let us beware of complaints, resentments, and evil-speaking against those who are ill-disposed to us, discontented with us, or hostile to our plans and arrangements, or who even persecute us with injuries, insults, and calumnies. Rather let us go on treating them as cordially as at first, or more so, as far as possible showing them esteem, always speaking well of them, doing them good, serving them on occasion, even to the point of taking shame and disgrace upon ourselves, if necessary to save their honor. All this ought to be done, first, to overcome evil with good, according to the teaching of the Apostles; and secondly, because they are our allies rather than our adversaries, as they aid us to destroy self-love, which is our greatest foe; and since it is they who give us an opportunity to gain merit, they ought to be considered our dearest friends. - St. Vincent de Paul
