Dear Parishioners,

Last week we heard the disciples asking Jesus to increase their faith and this week we hear about the curing of the ten lepers. Jesus asked; “Were not all ten made whole? Where are the other nine?” In Jesus’ time, the only one that could declare a person cured from leprosy was the priest and that is why Jesus instructed them to go to the priest. This foreigner was not associated with a priest and therefore, he came back to Jesus who cured him. Jesus is the High Priest and in a sense was challenging people to recognize Him as such. When we sin, we are like the lepers who are ostracized from the community and it is in the Sacrament of Reconciliation that we are made whole and clean and declared fit to return to the community. In confession, the priest who gives us absolution sends us back to our rightful place in the community. Like the one foreigner who came to thank Jesus, we must also thank Jesus and God for the gift of healing that we receive in confession. I pray that all recognize that we are sinners and need the Sacrament of Reconciliation to put us back on the path to the kingdom that reinstates us into the community of faith. For those who do not regularly approach Confession, a good guideline to follow is about three times a year; once during Advent preparing for the Birth of Jesus, once during Lent preparing for Easter, and once between Easter and Advent, or anytime anything serious is preventing us from a deeper relationship with God and the community. Like the lepers in the Gospel today, I pray that we may all seek to be cleansed and cured so that we are better able to take our place in the pilgrim community of faith journeying to the Father and our eternal life in heaven.

Celebrating a New Deacon!

Carlos Pineda has been journeying with his wife Yvonne for the last five years of preparation in the diaconate program. I am pleased to announce that he has been called to the Sacred Order of the Permanent Diaconate by Bishop Kevin Vann. He will be ordained at Christ Cathedral on Saturday Oct. 19 and will celebrate with our community at the 9:00AM Mass on Sunday, Oct. 20 and the Spanish Mass at 7:00PM on Saturday Oct. 26. At these two Masses he will assist at Mass as a deacon for the first time. All are invited and encouraged to a celebration in the Parish Center after these Masses to congratulate Carlos and Yvonne. Please join me in welcoming them both to the service of St. Nicholas Parish. Congratulations and thank you for your “Yes” to God’s call to serve.

Parish Council

The following members of the Parish Pastoral Council completed their terms this summer: Joseph McMahon, Virginia Rich and Ginny White. Their dedication, involvement in Parish activities and input to the Pastor have helped the Pastor achieve his goals and have contributed greatly to the parish community. On behalf of the PPC, the Pastor and the St. Nicholas parish community, we offer our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for their unselfish service to the Pastor and their fellow parishioners and thank them for their service.

The following new PPC members were interviewed and appointed by the Pastor to the PPC: Andrée Carrier, Diane Casey and Rosalie Souza. In addition, at the request of the Pastor, Betty Newstrom agreed to serve another year and John Sivilla returned to the Council to serve a one-year term. We welcome them all and look forward to serving together and benefitting from the knowledge and experience they bring to our parish community.

Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be held this Sunday, October 13th

...preparing for a medical procedure or treatment.

...experiencing mental or emotional stress with physical symptoms. ...living with recurring illnesses or disabilities. ...living with a terminal illness or in hospice care. ...those of mature age or in frail health.

The Anointing of the Sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude.
