must be alert and stay awake.
They must see what’s going on.
They must listen to directions and
what is being said.
This rule applies to our work. A
mother watching her children, or
watching the pots and pans on the
stove, or watching the budget,
must be alert and awake.
“Heads up.” That applies
especially to the public worship of
the family of God – very especially
in this Advent season. We must
stay awake during Mass, not
merely physically awake, but
mentally and spiritually alert.
“Watch the road” can be
translated: “Watch the lectors and
the priest.” Be alert to the
readings and join in with the
prayers and responses. Add your
voices to the singing of the choir
members. Try to get the meaning
of what you say and what you sing.
“Lift up your heads.” Look at the
consecrated Host; look at the
chalice of His Precious Blood.
Right now we are traveling toward
Christ. In a few minutes, we will
meet Him in the Christmas of this
Mass. In a few weeks, we will
greet Him in the Christmas of
I recall a story that
goes back several
years about a bus
driver in Oklahoma
who reached an
unusual record. In
twenty-three years
he drove a bus over 900,000 miles
without a single accident. When
asked how he did it, he gave this
simple answer: “Watch the road.”
Today’s Gospel gives the same
advice: “Watch at all times.”
Jesus puts it several ways: “Look
up”; “Take heed”; “Raise your
heads.” This is not only good
spiritual advice; it is a safe rule for
everyday life. How often we use
the expressions: “Stay awake”; “Be
on your guard”; “Heads up”; “Keep
your eyes open.”
To drive a car or bus safely we
must “watch the road.” An athlete
needs to keep his eyes open. He
must be ready for any emergency,
any change in a play or movement.
He must watch the ball. How we
admire those who play “heads up”
football. (Why I’ve lost hope in the
Lions!)
To succeed in school a boy or girl
must pay attention to the teacher,
Bethlehem. In a few short months
or years, we will be with Him in
the never-ending Christmas of
Heaven. Prepare for all three
comings. Watch the road; watch
ourselves, for we do not know the
day or the hour.
This thought occurs again and
again in today’s response: “Your
ways, O Lord, make known to me
… teach me your paths … guide me
in Your truth … the Lord shows
sinners the way … He guides the
humble … all the paths of the Lord
are kindness and constancy.”
Daily life is a lot like driving,
especially driving a bus; we are
responsible for the spiritual safety
of others. We need someone to
show us the way, to guide us.
Through the prayers and actions of
this Mass may Jesus help us to
stay awake. May He help us steer
away from what will hurt us
spiritually, and what will hurt
those for whom we are responsible.
May Jesus guide us to His coming
in this Mass, to His coming at
Christmas, and to His coming in
power and glory at the end of our
journey. God bless you!

Joyce Hansen, DRE
Thank you so much for supporting youth ministry through
your prayers, purchasing flower cards, and
participating in our Trivia night!
I am looking forward to a joy filled Advent.
How will you celebrate the season?
If there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I look forward to serving you in any way I can!
Many Catholics do not always understand what the season of Advent is
about. The society part of preparing for Christmas and the Christian/
Catholic part of preparing for Christmas are really two different things.
Advent is necessary in order to celebrate Christmas well. At the beginning
of Advent we focus on the end of all time. and the eventuality of our depth
and judgment. It is an annual checkup on our recognition that our actions
have bearing on the way we will be judged at the end of time by Christ.
The second focus is on our preparation for the season of Christmas when
we immerse ourselves in the mystery of the Incarnation and in God’s great
love and mercy for all.
This week begins not only the Advent season, but also the liturgical year.
Our focus is from darkness to light, it invites us to pause, reflect and pre-
pare. The focus this first week is to put aside the pressures and fears of
this world and trust in God.
We are being called to be alert to how God is calling us. To not be asleep in
our routines but to be alert and examine closely what is most important in
our lives. Is God at the center of our lives and our families’ lives?

Sharing the Gospel
One day Jesus will come back to
take us home to live with him in
heaven. So when scary things
happen around us, we do not need
to be afraid. We can stand up tall,
because we know heaven will be so
much better than this world.
Prayer
Dear God, when I am afraid, help
me to be brave and trust in you. I
know heaven will be wonderful.
