MIDTOWN TRANSPORTATION CENTER

Within a several-block span in Houston’s midtown district, there are two bus stations, multiple bus and Metrorail stops, and significant vehicular traffic but little pedestrian traffic. To facilitate more localized forms of trans-portation, the proposal combines the various stations and stops into one, central hub combined with other programs spanning a ten-block area.

Functioning as a sort of closed-looped system, the mix-use center provides the opportunity to redistribute people into the city with alternative means of transportation. Larger forms, such as cars, buses, and the rail, can be traded for smaller forms such as bikes and scooters, taking people from the highway to the street and ultimately changing their experience within the city.

The transportation center houses a Metrorail stop, bus station, and bike and scooter rentals on the ground level. The retail area unifies the various programs, configured as a horizontal surface that runs the length of the site and then is penetrated vertically by the hotel, parking, and office spaces. Rather than solely being an area of transition, the various programs complement the amount of traffic, keeping people on site.

The concept behind the master plan is centered around patterns of density that are particular to Houston’s downtown district. It is characterized by two edges: the urban edge and the bayou edge. The urban edge is a series of low, compact retail spaces which act as a filter, only allowing pedestrians to enter the site.

Progressing through the site toward the bayou, the buildings rise. The sur-face is then infilled with natural vegetation rather than parking, and the necessary parking is imbedded within the towers. There is a progression from the denser ‘urban’ edge to the denser ‘vegetation’ edge. This allows pedestrian movement and vegetation growth to inform each other.

Downtown has seen drastic changes since its early development along Buffalo Bayou. As the population has grown, surface density has actually decreased and been funneled into high-rises which are spread throughout an immense amount of surface parking.

Carved out holes allow for circulation and out-door space within the body of the tower. These punched out breezeways connect multiple floors, creating public space within the tower and visually interrupting its solid presence.

Metal mesh panels running the height of the tow-er would allow for vertical vegetation growth while also providing shade for the inner glazing layer. The skin further connects the building to the site by pulling the vegetation upward and allowing for a level of transparency that also makes the tower less sizable in appearance.

The site for the small lecture hall and gallery space is located on Richmond Avenue along the proposed Metrorail station corridor. The site and building are a gateway to the Menil campus, so the circulation through the building dictated both the structural system and relationship between the gallery spaces and the main lecture hall and outdoor theater. The plan allows for circulation through the building and onto the Menil campus and the siting integrates Dan Flavin’s exhibit in the neighboring Richmond Hall.

The structural system is based around the concept of three anchor points: the lecture hall plane is anchored at the stage and lifts up to allow for an entrance underneath the space and the gallery space is “anchored” on the opposite end. The gallery plane slopes the opposite direction from the main lecture hall and feeds into the outdoor theater which acts as a third anchor point, continuing the pattern of circulation.

The main lecture hall is surrounded on either side by two deep trusses. The gallery then hangs off the extended steel beams that run across the center trusses. The gallery spaces are separated to allow for more natural light and a visual connection to the first floor entry and gallery. The fractures also create a sense of separation between the galleries and mark the pro-gression of the slope.
