WORSHIP

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held: Tuesday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. “I am here, come visit Me”

A NEW DAY DAWNS

Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing “by their actions” how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, “The world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live “as though” they aren’t doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets—and even their father—and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn’t a new day dawn today for us as well? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS

Our deep gratitude to parishioners and visitors for

OUR NEW CHURCH

As of the end of December the masonry work and plaster work for the new church will be on-going for some time as three sides of the building are being worked

on. Some of the exterior manufactured stone trim is also arriving on site. On the interior, wall studs and fur-down work continues. The interior rooms and ceilings are taking shape. Contractors are also working on the low voltage systems such as security, access and fire. At the St Vincent de Paul building and pavilion, the electrical rough-in work is on-going and exterior lighting installed. All of the parking area pole lights are installed and two are currently operating in the parking lot for security purposes. Follow along with the construction updates on the parish website under new church and construction journal. There you will find pictures following the construction progress. For your SAFETY, DO NOT ENTER THE CONSTRUCTION AREA including any of the cleared areas of our site even when there are no workers present. While we did meet our financial goals for our campaign, thanks to the generous support of many parishioners, our parish will be taking on a sizable monthly payment. If you are still making payments on a pledge, please continue to do so until fulfilled. Any additional gifts to our campaign will also be appreciated. If you would like to sponsor an element of our new church, we have an updated list of items that are available in the narthex. The requested donations for items range from $2,500 to $100,000. Please pray for the safe construction of our new church and for minimal weather delays. Contact our campaign team through Tom Condon at 281-382-8097 for more information about the campaign or Jerry Strenk at 936-449-6686 with Building Committee questions.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” As disciples, we are called to continue God’s work on earth. Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living gospel values.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is able to assist poor families by providing food, utility, rent and other bills and while caring for them. Monthly needed items: rice, creamy peanut butter, jelly, low sodium spam, spaghetti Through your prayers and donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in December, we were able to help 1363 neighbors. St. Nick visited the children with toys and goodies. Also celebrating the birth of Jesus were our disabled and veteran friends. Please help us continue to serve our community as we begin the new year 2021. Thank you St. Matthias and everyone who contributed to our success!!!

Sponsor a New Church Paver

The construction of our new church is well underway and is expected to be completed in late 2021. A portion of the sidewalk leading up to the new church has been set aside for special engraved pavers where parishioners and friends of our parish can create a lasting memory of their support for our new church. 4” x 8” and 8” x 8” pavers are available for purchase for you to have your special prayer, your family name, or other engraved including religious artwork. Orders can be placed online at our parish website, www.st-matthias.net, or using the order form available in the narthex and online. If you plan to purchase multiple pavers, please use a separate order form for each paver or order online where all pavers can be grouped under a single order. If you are interested in ordering multiple pavers with text that spans across them, please contact Tom Mayhew at [email protected]

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult

Did You Know!

Last week, the RCIA lesson was about Church History. Our Church history has experienced periods of abuse and corruption but guided by the Holy Spirit the Church also experienced periods of spiritual renewal, reform, and the founding of many religious orders (Franciscans and Jesuits). When St. John Paul II was pope, he asked forgiveness for sins committed in the name of the Church through the ages such as involvement in the slave trade and silence during the Holocaust. Through the centuries, the Church has been challenged by heresies (Jesus not divine or human), by barbarian tribes invading the Empire, secular interference in church affairs (the state appointing clergy and the pope moving from Rome to Avignon France), the Great Schism between the Eastern Orthodox churches and the Western Latin churches over papal authority and wording in the Creed about the Holy Spirit, and the Crusades (1095-1271; primarily about the desire to protect Christians and holy sites in the Holy Land). One significant challenge was the Protestant Reformation. In 1517, Martin Luther, a monk, was seeking to reform the Church but because of miscommunications between him and church leaders and outside secular forces led to a break from Catholicism and the beginning of the protestant churches. The Church responded with the Council of Trent (1545-1563) which clarified church teachings, corrected abuses and establish seminaries to educate the clergy. The Church would hold councils and write Creeds to combat heresies and other disputes and there were men and women who helped with reform and renewal in the Church. A few of these people were St. Patrick (one of the missionaries sent to convert the barbarian tribes to Christianity), Pope Gregory and St. Catherine of Siena (fought against secular authority), St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Dominic (preached to the people where they lived) and St Vincent de Paul (organized ways to help poor). Missionaries from Spain and France brought the faith to the Americas even at the cost of their lives. Catholic population in the United States was small until the arrival of immigrants mostly from Ireland and Germany. Overtime, Catholics from other countries add to the growth of the Catholic population. They were often subject to discrimination and misunderstanding such as wanting to help the Pope take over the United States. Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) introduced the most significant changes to the Catholic Church in over four centuries. The council made updates to the way Catholics worship and practice their faith and encouraged lay people to become involved in church ministries and social justice. How does the Church empower you through attending Mass and receiving the sacraments to be a missionary to those around you? Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to be Jesus’s hands, feet, and voice to every person you encounter.

Healing with Hope After having lost a loved one, have you thought about seeking a support group through the church and there was none. A committee was formed with Father’s approval to fulfill that need at St. Matthias. Whether your loss is recent or months or years ago grief is always present. Our purpose is to provide faith centered support to those wanting to be with others who have experienced a similar loss and to help each other through and during this time of grief. We are calling this ministry, “Healing with Hope”. After looking at several programs we have chosen to offer a 5-week program called “Grieving with Great Hope” in the coming year. More information in the near future about our new ministry and when it will begin.

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire

to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive

You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
