grandparents is a testimony to our faith. While the names of Joachim and Anne may be legendary, we know that Jesus had grandparents, the parents of Mary (as well as those of Saint Joseph). Our God truly be-came human and lives among us.

Mary, the Jewish Woman that Changed History The Virgin Mary is by no means a being from another planet. She is a women like any other. Mary is a human being. She is not God, for sure, but she is the human that has most allowed the grace of God to embrace her. We must not forget that the Virgin Mary was born and lived in a specific place here on Earth. We call her Mary of Nazareth because the biblical account tells us that the angel Gabriel was sent by

God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to announce unto her that she would be the mother of the Redeemer of the world (cf. Lk 1:26). Some traditions say that the Virgin Mary was born in Seppho-ris, a village near Nazareth. Some others say that she was born in Jerusalem. What is certain is that traditions point out that her parents were two Israelites named Anne and Joachim. Mary may have been part of the tribe of Levi or the tribe of Judah; but, since she is designated as a Jewish woman, we affirm that Mary was part of the people of Israel, born of Israelite parents. She is a woman that was born into and was part of the chosen people of God, so that the Messiah would be born and, with him, the salvation of the world. The words that the Virgin Mary pronounced were: “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). These words are an echo of her people’s words as giv-en to Moses on Mount Sinai: “We will do everything the Lord has said” (Ex 19:8). The Virgin Mary went to the synagogue in Nazareth and listened to the Scripture; she learned and kept these les-sons within her heart. Mary wasn’t a woman too different from the others. She knew that one day the awaited Messiah would arrive and that a Jewish woman, just like her, would be chosen to be the mother of the Savior. She may even have prayed so that this moment so long awaited by her people would finally arrive. When the angel announced unto her that she would be the Mother of the Messi-ah, she could not understand how she could be a mother since she knew no man (Lk 1:34). Mary’s question lets us understand that, even though she was betrothed to Joseph of Nazareth, she had a vow of virginity previously agreed upon with her fiancé. It was customary back then to have two stages in the marriage. A year before the religious wedding, the couple would be betrothed and the bride would be considered already the groom’s property, even before living together and starting a married life. If the bride became pregnant before the religious wedding, she was considered an adul-terer. The angel’s explanation was thus necessary: “the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the pow-er of the Most High will overshadow you” (Lk 1:35). With this reply the Virgin understands that it is God who will make this possible; and she trusts Him and accepts. The Virgin Mary, trusting God and accepting his word as true, changed the course of history, for she allowed herself to be the conduit to carry out the plan of salvation of God for the world. Mother, you are blessed among women!

María, la mujer judía que cambió la historia. La Virgen María no es un ser de otro planeta. Ella es una mujer como cualquier otra. María es un ser humano. Ella, verdaderamente, no es Dios, pero es el ser humano que más ha permitido que la gracia de Dios la envuela. No debemos olvidar que la Virgen María nació y vivió en un lugar específico aquí en la Tierra. La llamamos María de Nazaret, porque el relato bíblico nos dice que el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad en Galilea llamada Nazaret, para anunciarle que ella sería la madre del Redentor del mundo (cf. Lc 1: 26). Algunas tradiciones dicen que la Virgen María nació en Séforis, un

pueblo cerca de Nazaret. Algunas otras dicen que nació en Jerusalén. Lo cierto es que las tradiciones señalan que sus padres fueron dos israelitas llamados Ana y Joaquín. María pudo haber sido parte de la tribu de Leví o de la tribu de Judá; pero, al ser designada como una mujer judía, podemos afirmamos que María era parte del pueblo de Israel, nacida de padres israelitas. Ella es una mujer que nació y formó parte del pueblo elegido de Dios, para que naciera el Mesías y, con él, la salvación para el mundo. Las palabras que pronunció la Virgen María fueron: "Hágase en mí según tu pala-bra" (Lc 1, 38). Estas palabras son un eco de las palabras de su pueblo, según dadas a Moisés en el Monte Sinaí: "Haremos todo lo que el Señor ha dicho" (Ex 19: 8). La Virgen María acudía a la sina-goga de Nazaret y escuchaba las Escrituras; aprendía y guardaba esas lecciones en su corazón. Ma-ría no era una mujer muy diferente de todas las demás. Ella conocía que un día llegaría el Mesías esperado y que una mujer judía, como ella, sería elegida para ser la madre del Salvador. Incluso puede que haya orado para que este momento tan anhelado por su pueblo llegara. Cuando el ángel le anunció que ella sería la Madre del Mesías, ella no comprende cómo podía ser madre, porque no conocía varón (Lucas 1:34). Por la pregunta de María se comprende que, aunque estaba prometida en matrimonio con José de Nazaret, ella debía tener un voto de virginidad previamente acordado con su prometido. Era la costumbre en ese entonces que la boda tuviera dos momentos. Un año an-tes de la boda religiosa, se llevaba a cabo el compromiso y la novia ya era considerada propiedad del novio, aun antes de vivir juntos y comenzar una vida matrimonial. Si la novia quedaba embarazada antes de la boda religiosa, esta era consideraba adúltera. La explicación del ángel era, por lo tanto, necesaria: "El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra" (Lc 1, 35). Con esta respuesta, la Virgen comprende que es Dios quien lo hará posible; y ella confía en Él y acepta. La Virgen María, al confiar en Dios y aceptar su palabra como verdad, cambió el curso de la historia, pues permitió que en ella se llevara a cabo el plan de salvación de Dios para el mundo. ¡Madre, bendita eres entre las mujeres!
