ST MARY STAR OF THE SEA
PARISH
SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 12, 2017
Mission Statement
We the people of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Ocean City, Maryland,
want to respond to God’s love for us by doing His will, to live the Gospel of
Jesus Christ and to love each other as Jesus loved us. In this way, He can live, as
Risen Lord, in our midst and attract all people to the Father. As part of the Church, we
want to be a “Home and School of Communion” where, through the celebration and
living out the Sacraments, and various ministries, each member can live in unity as a
child of God, building up the Kingdom of God until Jesus will come again in glory.

Dear Parishioners & Friends: We take another big step into our Lenten Season and after being with Jesus in the desert we are now called to follow Him on a mountain. It is here that He reveals Himself as glorious Lord. If for Abraham had to be difficult to understand the call of God for us today it has become much simpler. In Jesus, we have the word of God incarnate: understandable, clear, and direct – we hear God saying about Jesus, "This is my beloved Son ... Listen to him" (v. 5). We don’t have to guess what God thinks, but just listen to what He says. We have to learn how He reveals Himself to us (v. 2), and to be prepared to climb the mountain, in prayer (v. 1), to listen to the voice of the prophets (v. 3), but without narcissism (v. 4). Listening is in function of living our life as children of God as we follow Jesus. To the extent that we listen to Him and put into practice His word our lives can also be transfigured. We know that life is a journey. When we convert and live according to His word, we discover moments of authentic joy, of success, of true experience of the divine. These are important moments that also help us to stimulate our generosity: to give all we are to God who rescues each one of us from anything that blocks us from Life. This week, let’s pray to the Lord that He will help us to understand that we can also Children in the Son of God, and pray that by working through Lent, we may end up experiencing Jesus’ resurrection in our life.
Lent is the season that allows us to take a look at all that separates us from God. There are many reconciliation services held in our area throughout the Lenten Season. Make sure you check the dates and locations so that you can participate in one of them. Many thanks to the kitchen crew who led our Friday Sta-tions of the Cross. This Saturday we have our Senior – Senior Prom. I’d like to thank all the members of our Youth Group TOP for organizing such a wonderful event.

Sharing the Gospel
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus showed his closest friends
- Peter, James, and John -
what heaven would be like. Jesus' friends were amazed to
see Moses and Elijah talking
to Jesus. Moses and Elijah had gone to heaven hundreds
of years before this day. Then Peter, James and John
heard God's voice from the cloud. Jesus, their friend and
teacher, was God's Son. They fell down in fear. You might,
too, if you were there.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for showing Jesus' friends what
heaven would be like.
Something to Draw
Draw a picture of what you think heaven might look like.
Mission for the Week
If you could see Jesus in heaven today, what would you talk
about? What would you
ask him?

We will give the Parish an additional time, as we start into Holy week, for Lenten Reflection as we have an additional opportunity to walk the way of the cross. Also, an awesome opportunity for parents and teens to work and walk together! If you are interested call or Email Rita at 410 289 7038 or [email protected] or talk to Deacon Dave!! We are excited to build on this beautiful parish tradition!
Coming Attraction Our Tuesday morning Adult formation class will restart next

between Sunday Mass and John’s Heavenly Vision in the

On Friday, March 3rd
, our entire staff gathered for catechetical training. Our topic of study was the Liturgy in our lives as Catholics. The training was possible through a DVD series featuring Bishop Robert E. Barron who provides a compelling examination of the Liturgy. We were enriched by our reflection. During Lent, our church encourages us to build a closer relationship with the Lord through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In order to provide an opportunity to our families to join in almsgiving, our school will participate in the Operation Rice Bowl program that is sponsored by the Catholic Relief Services. In doing so, we join Catholic families across the globe in responding to God’s people who are in need. MBS is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year for new applicants who are existing parishioners in one of our 8 sponsoring parishes. Beginning February 1 and through April 3, 2017, the application fee will be reduced from $250.00 per child to $100 per family. This is a significant savings for new applicants. Open enrollment applications will be accepted starting March 1, 2017 for our 2017-2018 academic year. Any questions or for more information about MBS, please contact Lisa Edmunds, Director of Admissions at 410-208-1600.
As per tradition, we have just had a
really cold week of the year so I
must turn my attention to warmth of
the Summer!!! So, of course I am dwelling on Vacation
Bible School!! Woohoo!!! This year we are going to be
creating the Maker Fun Factory! The theme is “created by
God, Build for a purpose! I am so excited!! We will
Embark on a VBS Adventure That Will help the children to
recognize that they are specially and wonderfully created by
God for his divine purpose! We will “Gear” up for an over-
the-top, well-constructed adventure! Hopefully during that
week we will Ground our kids in the rock-solid foundation of
God’s love, a love that takes us through all of life’s joys and
sorrows times. A Typical Day at Maker Fun Factory
Vacation Bible School: Our Kids will spend each day
experimenting and building through field-tested activity
stations with their gadget Crews. Every station is designed
to reinforce the daily Bible Point in a hands-on, interactive
way that keeps everyone engaged.
This is an awesome and exciting week for our kids and for
the teens and adults the work VBS. We gain so much from
the week but it takes many hand and various skill sets!
So, while it may seem early to be thinking of our summer
activities, I ask you to pray for a successful program. I also
ask you to pray for your role in its success! Can you join us
for the whole week? Help us with decorating? Provide
some of the needed items or more importantly pledge to
pray that the message reaches all of us so together we can
follow Jesus and recognize that we are made for this, live
