HOMILÍA DEL SANTO PADRE BENEDICTO XVI Plaza de San Pedro Domingo 21 de octubre de 2012 El hijo del hombre ha venido a servir y dar su vida en rescate por la multitud (cf. Mc 10,45). Venerados Hermanos, queridos hermanos y hermanas. Hoy la Iglesia escucha una vez más estas palabras de Jesús, pronunciadas durante el camino hacia Jerusalén, donde tenía que cumplirse su misterio de pasión, muerte y resurrección. Son palabras que manifiestan el sentido de la mi-sión de Cristo en la tierra, caracterizada por su inmolación, por su donación total. En este tercer domingo de octubre, en el que se celebra la Jornada Mundial de las Misiones, la Iglesia las escucha con particular intensidad y reaviva la conciencia de vivir completamente en perenne actitud de servicio al hombre y al Evangelio, como Aquel que se ofre-ció a sí mismo hasta el sacrificio de la vida. Saludo cordialmente a todos vosotros, que llenáis la Plaza de San Pedro, en particular a las delegaciones oficiales y a los peregrinos venidos para festejar a los siete nuevos santos. Saludo con afecto a los cardenales y obispos que en estos días están participando en la Asamblea sinodal sobre la Nueva Evange-lización. Se da una feliz coincidencia entre la celebración de esta Asamblea y la Jornada Misionera; y la Palabra de Dios que hemos escuchado resulta iluminadora para ambas. Ella nos muestra el estilo del evangelizador, llamado a dar testimonio y a anunciar el mensaje cristiano conformándose a Jesucristo, llevando su misma vida. Esto vale tanto para la misión ad gentes como para la nueva evangelización en las regiones de antigua tradición cristiana. El hijo del hombre ha venido a servir y dar su vida en rescate por la multitud (cf. Mc 10,45). Estas palabras han constituido el programa de vida de los siete beatos que hoy la Iglesia inscribe solemnemente en el glorioso coro de los santos. Con valentía heroica gastaron su existencia en una total consagración a Dios y en un ge-neroso servicio a los hermanos. Son hijos e hijas de la Iglesia, que escogieron una vida de servicio siguiendo al Señor. La santidad en la Iglesia tiene siempre su fuente en el misterio de la Redención, que ya el profeta Isaías prefigura en la primera lectura: el Siervo del Señor es el Justo que «justificará a muchos, porque cargó con los crímenes de ellos» (53,11); este Siervo es Jesucristo, crucificado, resucitado y vivo en la gloria. La canonización que estamos ce-lebrando constituye una elocuente confirmación de esta misteriosa realidad salvadora. La tenaz profesión de fe de estos siete generosos discípulos de Cristo, su configuración al Hijo del hombre, resplandece hoy en toda la Iglesia.

HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI Saint Peter's Square Sunday, 21 October 2012 The Son of Man came to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (cf. Mk 10:45) Dear Brother Bishops, Dear brothers and sisters! Today the Church listens again to these words of Jesus, spoken by the Lord during his journey to Jerusalem, where he was to accomplish the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection. They are words which enshrine the meaning of Christ’s mission on earth, marked by his sacrifice, by his total self-giving. On this third Sunday of October, on which we celebrate World Mission Sunday, the Church listens to them with special attention and renews her conviction that she should always be fully dedicated to serve mankind and the Gospel, after the example of the One who gave him-self up even to the sacrifice of his life. I extend warm greetings to all of you who fill Saint Peter’s Square, especially the official delegations and the pilgrims who have come to celebrate the seven new saints. I greet with affection the Cardinals and Bishops who, during these days, are taking part in the Synodal Assembly on the New Evangelization. The coincidence between this ecclesiastical meeting and World Mission Sunday is a happy one; and the word of God that we have listened to sheds light on both subjects. It shows how to be evangelizers, called to bear witness and to proclaim the Christian message, configuring ourselves to Christ and following his same way of life. This is true both for the mission ad Gentes and for the new evangelization in places with ancient Christian roots. The Son of Man came to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (cf. Mk 10:45) These words were the blueprint for living of the seven Blessed men and women that the Church solemnly enrols this morning in the glorious ranks of the saints. With heroic courage they spent their lives in total consecration to the Lord and in the generous service of their brethren. They are sons and daughters of the Church who chose a life of service following the Lord. Holiness always rises up in the Church from the well-spring of the mystery of redemption, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah in the first reading: the Servant of the Lord is the righteous one who “shall make many to be accounted as righteous; and he shall bear their iniquities” (Is 53:11); this Servant is Jesus Christ, crucified, risen and living in glory. Today’s canonization is an eloquent confirmation of this mysterious saving reality. The tenacious profession of faith of these seven generous disciples of Christ, their configuration to the Son of Man shines out brightly today in the whole Church.
