Peanut Butter and Jelly Sunday For: “Let’s Feed Our Children” a free lunch

program in Sterling and Rock Falls.

Date: May 11-12, 2013

Who Participates: All Area Churches

Donations of jars of smooth (not chunky peanut butter

and jelly) not jam or preserves, will be accepted in order to help feed children

throughout the summer. Please bring your peanut butter or jelly jars to

Church on Sunday, May 12. We are also accepting them at the Parish Center

Office Monday-Friday, from 9a-4p.

After Mother’s Day Promotion on May 12, please deliver the peanut butter

and jelly to the Sauk Valley Food Bank, 1801 Plant Road, (west of Self-Help),

Sterling any Monday-Thursday between 9a and noon. It will be appreciated.

Last year over 28,000 lunches were prepared and served.

St. Peregrine Prayer Group

This prayer group meets on Wednesdays

in the chapel at 2:10 p.m., to pray for

those who have cancer or other very

serious health problems. Please join us

for 35 minutes of prayer for your loved

one/s who struggle with cancer.

Helpers of God’s Most Precious Infants

This is a weekly pro-life prayer group that

meets every Thursday after the 8:30 a.m.

Mass, in the chapel, to pray for the end of

abortions. We welcome those who would

like to join us.

Congratulations Duncan Gingrich, son of parishioners

Matt & Teresa Gingrich, and a 2009

graduate of St. Mary School was recently

honored with a Centennial Honors

Scholarship to Western Illinois

University. This scholarship covers all 4

years of tuition and room and board.

Duncan had to meet strict criteria for the

honor, including 32 or higher ACT score

and 3.5 or higher GPA. Congratulations

to Duncan and his family.

La misa diaria será a las 8.30a.m. en la capilla.

Cuando llegan a una gran ciudad, algunos hispanos se pueden sentir algo intimidados por la falta de color o de variedad en muchas de las calles. Todo se les hace igual y por esa falta de variedad, confuso y amenazador. La falta de una referencia o un idioma común hace sentir como abandonado, desprotegido e indefenso. La ciudad ideal no es, sin duda, una ciudad ideal es un lugar sin huérfanos; un lugar de alegría y de fiesta. En un lugar así, hay fortaleza y protección, aunque haya mucha variedad y muchas cosas no resulten familiares: pero se puede aprender porque hay diferencias y contrastes. Lo que se nos promete hoy en las lecturas es precisamente esa protección y defensa que viene de estar en la ciudad de Dios, en el lugar en que habita el Espíritu. No será familiar, pero habrá algo pero habrá algo común, y es la presencia de Dios en medio del pueblo. La promesa es no dejarnos huérfanos, pero no es de sacarnos del posible conflicto que pueda venir con la variedad. La variedad es precisamente lo que nos da identidad y nos saca de la amenaza de una monotonía en la que no sabríamos cuáles son los referentes. A veces no es fácil, como no lo fue para los primeros cristianos el aceptar la diferencia de los gentiles convertidos. Los que ya estaban en la comunidad como judíos se aferran, casi lógicamente, a sus tradiciones y costumbres. No es de extrañar. ¿Acaso nosotros no haríamos lo mismo? Pero llegan a darse cuenta de que es por el poder del Espíritu que pueden de verdad ser comunidad de Cristo en la variedad. Que lo que los une no es la diversidad de tradiciones culturales o familiares, sino el Espíritu. A veces el entenderse puede ser difícil. Todos tenemos experiencias de esto. Lo distinto puede ser amenazador y nos puede costar mucho entrar en ello. Lo desconocido casi siempre en el mismo grupo, hablando de lo mismo y en el mismo idioma..pero eso no nos saca de nosotros mismos, no nos obliga tanto a la reflexión, y no nos desafía a ser mejores y a dar de nosotros mismos. La ciudad de Dios es gloriosa, sí, pero también pide una entrega por nuestra parte..a todos y no sólo a quienes son iguales a nosotros.

¿Qué tensiones se dan en mi comunidad respecto a la diversidad? ¿Qué me es más fácil: estar con los que son sólo como yo o salir de mí mismo? ¿Qué tendría que hacer?
