New Year Greetings and
Salutations,
Today we celebrate the
Solemnity of the Epiphany of
the Lord. We hear the story
of the three wise men, or
Magi, who saw a star and
came in search of the infant
Jesus. The word, epiphany is
Greek for “showing forth.”
When the Magi followed the
star, they recognized Jesus as
the long awaited Messiah and
worshiped him.
The wise men brought gifts to
the Messiah. What gifts can
you give to Jesus, the infant
king?
Tomorrow all Faith Formation
families will be given a piece of
chalk and directions to bless
one of the entry ways at home.
Together as a family bless your
entryway. The instructions and
prayer are on a green piece of
paper in the Ziploc snack bag
with the chalk. Yay! Have
fun!
Classes resume tomorrow
January 7
th
at our regular
time. See you then!
What do you get when you
cross a snowman and a dog?
Frostbite! Ouch!! LOL!
Peace and Prayers,
Sabrina Queen
Queen’s Quotes from
Religious Formation
The Christmas season is already winding down as we celebrate the Feast of the
Epiphany. The “magi” came to adore the newborn babe and, according to the
Gospel, brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Obviously these are
symbolic gifts, perhaps foretelling the future that Jesus would have. As I often
point out, the Gospel does not mention how many of these “magi” came. Most
probably because there were three gifts, tradition tells us that there were three of
them. But we do not know for sure, just as we do not know if they were all men
or if some women came along as well. “Magi” is the plural form of the Latin
word “magus”, which means magician or astrologer.
The custom of giving gifts at Christmas most probably came from this Bible
story. Giving gifts on Christmas Day is perhaps a more recent custom. Some
countries had the tradition of gifts on December 6, the feast of St. Nicholas.
Not only among families and friends, but also here at the parish, many of you
participated in the various opportunities to give gifts to others. Through the
giving tree, organized by the Christian Service commission, literally hundreds of
you bought gifts to give to less fortunate families to help make their Christmas a
little happier. Faith formation families and the youth group also assisted the
“Mercado” in Southwest Detroit in providing gifts, once again for the poor,
especially for children. The Knights of Columbus collected winter coats for
needy children. Your generosity is something that continues to amaze me. And
not only at Christmas time. It seems that whenever we are collecting items:
Halloween candy, school supplies or whatever it may be, we are overwhelmed by
the amount that we collect. For the many people who benefit from your big-
heartedness, thank you. I am reminded of Jesus’ words, “Whatever you do for
the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you do for me.” We may not have
brought gold, frankincense of myrrh, but gifts much dearer to the hearts of those
who received them. Imagine the smiles on the hundreds of faces.
God Bless you.
Fr. Ken
From the Pastor’s Desk
Signing of the Door on Epiphany
A popular tradition celebrated on Epiphany is the marking with chalk inside the
main doorway of a house with the following: 20+C+M+B+19. The writing on
the doorway signifies:
20 = the current century (2019)
+ = Jesus' Cross
C = the initial of the Wiseman Casper
M = the initial of the Wiseman Melchior
B = the initial of the Wiseman Balthazar
19 = the current year
As a family writes these initials and numbers over the door, each member makes
a promise to look for Jesus until he/she finds Him. They are challenged to look
for Jesus in the lives of all people who visit their home. The family also promis-
es all who enter may find Jesus in their home as the family practices virtues of
consolation, understanding, hospitality, rest, forgiveness and love.
It is most fitting that we should bless the doors of our home every year in Janu-
ary. The first month of the year gets its name from the Roman God Janus whose
name means "gate" or "door" and the first month is the door to the New Year.
May it be a happy and truly holy one!

WEEK OF PRAYER
CHRISTIAN UNITY
Tuesday, January 22 at 7:00
This year it is held at:
St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy
This is a joint prayer service with
Timothy Lutheran Church
Newburg United Methodist Church
The Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church
“Every year, Christians across
the world gather in prayer for
growth in unity. We do this in
a world where corruption,
greed and injustice bring
about inequality and division.
We are called together to
form a united witness for jus-
tice and for Christian Unity
that becomes a means of
Christ’s healing grace for the
brokenness of the world. Only
by heeding Jesus’s prayer
“that they all may be one” can
we witness to living unity in
diversity.”
Please plan to join us for a
wonderful evening of prayer
and music presented from our
neighbor Churches.

EPIPHANY PROCLAMATION 2019
While a day like Christmas is fixed in our minds and on the calendars
on December 25th, many of the important feasts of the Church year
move, based upon the date that Easter is set. Easter changes each
year moving to the Sunday after the “Paschal Full Moon,” and can fall
between March 22 and April 25.
In ancient times before calendars were common, most people did not
know the dates for the upcoming Liturgical year. On Epiphany
Sunday, the upcoming dates were “proclaimed” after the gospel in
this way:
Dear brothers and sisters, the glory of the Lord has shone upon us,
and shall ever be manifest among us, until the day of his return.
Through the rhythms of times and season let us celebrate the
mysteries of salvation.
Let us recall the year’s culmination, the Easter Triduum of the Lord:
his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial, and his rising celebrated
between the evening of the Eighteenth of April and the evening of
the Twentieth day of April, Easter Sunday being on the Twenty-
first day of April.
Each Easter-as on each Sunday-the Holy Church makes present the
great and saving deed by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and
death. From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy.
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the Sixth day
of March.
The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on Sunday, the
Thirtieth day of May.
Pentecost, joyful conclusion of the season of Easter, will be
celebrated on the Ninth day of June.
And, this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on the First day of
December, 2019.
Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the Passover of Christ in the
feasts of the holy Mother of God, in the feast of the Apostles and
Saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed.
To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come, Lord of
time and history, be endless praise, for every and ever.
Amen.
