Parish Mission Statement
Our Parish Family, under the influence of the Gospel, strives to be bold and fearless disciples of Jesus Christ. We witness to our Catholic
faith by living the Eucharist. We are the hands and feet of Christ in our service and in our joyful proclamation of the goodness of God.

Joyful News
A big THANK YOU to
everyone who pitched in to help
with the Mass on the Grass and
parish picnic last Sunday. After a
long summer of high heat and
humidity, the weather cooperated
and we had a great day. From the set up to the clean up, the
Mass preparation and games for the kids, the food preparation
and serving, everything went well. Thanks to all of you who
brought a dish to pass to others, too. Everyone pitching in
helps to bring us closer to God and make the community
stronger.
I was very young when President John Kennedy was
assassinated, and I’m sure that I didn’t fully understand what
was happening. I bring this up because we often hear his
Inauguration speech quoted. I was too young to remember
that, but the line “Ask not what your country can do for you.
Ask what you can do for your country” is perhaps one of the
most famous and often-quoted sayings in our language.
Kennedy actually took the phrase from earlier politicians such
as Oliver Wendell Holmes and Warren G. Harding. In those
few words, his point is very clearly made. It’s not about what
I can take or get, it’s about what I can give. The same goes for
your parish. It’s not just about what you can get here, it’s also about what and how you can give. Time, talent, treasure. It
may sound too cliché but I think it’s worth thinking about.
How can you be a more active member of St. Mary, Cause of
our Joy parish? Other than the obvious answers, what is it that
you want to take away from the parish?
We’ll be coming up with a new mission statement for our
new parish. It’s important that you let your ideas be known.
You’ll have a chance over the next couple of weeks. Please
make sure that you take some time to give some thought to
what you will give, and what you want to receive.
God Bless. Fr. Ken

The Bottom Line An oldie but goodie.
Saul knew he had moved to a heavily
Christian town when he was watching the
Star Wars trilogy at the local movie
theater. Every time the phrase “May
the force be with you,” was uttered on-
screen, the audience replied, “And also
with you.”

The Jubilee Year of Mercy With Pope Francis
Missionary Disciples
Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone
who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and
proclaim that love. Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love
of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are “disciples” and “missionaries,” but rather that we
are always “missionary disciples.”
- Evangelii Gaudium
Reflection: There are many examples in Scripture of people who experience the mercy of God and then turn to share
this mercy with others—the Samaritan woman and St. Paul are two examples. Have you seen this in your own life?
How can you more deeply experience the mercy of God so that you can give it to others more richly?
It’s hard to believe a new school year is here. I hope all of you had a fantastic summer! Gearing up to tackle a new year in high school can be a real challenge. Maybe it’s your freshman year – you don’t know anyone and making friends is all you can think about. You have to learn a new floor plan, how to schedule your classes, and there’s going to be all that freedom! Perhaps this is the year you’ll muster the courage to try out for that team. Or maybe it will be your year to try out for the lead in the school play or musical. It might be the year for your first romance or maybe you end it. Or it ends with your broken heart. What if that new teacher won’t get off your back? How about that coach? How much more can he ask for? It’s tough to juggle a part-time job – and keep your grades up! Grades? College? Graduation? Friends who are into alcohol and drugs, sex and trouble. Friends who let you down! Friends who disappoint you. Where do you draw the line? The challenges are endless! These are some of the topics that we talk about at our youth group meetings. What crosses do you face in the beginning of a school year? How can you deal with them? How can we live our faith to make the kind of difference in our lives that makes these crosses bearable? Jesus said that to follow him, we must pick up our crosses and go forward, even when we are afraid, even when we don’t think we can, even when we don’t want to. Yet we know that with Christ, all things are possible. Let your faith be your shield. Are you interested finding out what St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, High School Youth Ministry has to offer? Then come and visit us at one of our upcoming meetings or events. The high school ministry program is open to any 9th - 12th grade high school regardless of what high school you attend (public or private). The youth group meets weekly on Mondays from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. from September until mid-June. July brings the opportunity to attend a week long summer mission trip and assist with the week long evening vacation bible school program as part of the skit, song, or game teams. Our first meeting will be held on Monday, September 12 at 7 pm in the new youth group room ( Room 105) in the parish center.
Saturday, September 10– PB&J Outreach – Martin Luther King & Third Street - Service Opportunity – Clothing Distribution- 7:30 a.m. departure from the church parking lot.
Monday, September 12 - First Youth Group Meeting - 7:00 -9:00 p.m. - in the youth group room in the parish center. - Snack is always served
Any questions, feel free to contact Carol Nelius, Coordinator of Youth ministry at [email protected] or 734 765 5525

!TODAY'S KNIGHTS: WHAT WE DO Some of you may remember long-time founding members of our old Tri-Parish Community: Bob and Ruth Ca-dotte. For years they were one of the many “Workers in the Vineyard” with-in our Church. We don’t see much of Bob anymore since he has now taken to full time care of Ruth and can’t get out much. Brother Knight Duane Har-bowy has been bringing the Eucharist to the Cadottes on Sundays as part of the Parish’s Homebound Eucharistic
Ministry for some time now. We re-cently received an eager letter from Bob and his request to join the Knights. We often hear from many men that they don’t have any time, or in some cases they feel they are a bit too old to help out. Give Bob Cadotte a call; he
may disagree. Into his nineties, he doesn’t get out into the vineyards or work like Martha anymore due to his caretaker role. He is now called to be more like Mary and sit at the feet of Jesus in prayer. Shown is Bob at his home during his First Degree Ceremony with Jerry Bo-rycz (left) and Duane Harbowy (right). We welcome your prayer, vivat Jesus Mr. Cadotte!

Killing! Killing! Murder!
PART II More states in the USA have legalized euthanasia/assisted suicide. The ra-tionale given: “Why
should someone who is ill, suffer?” Even though we have more capabilities of controlling pain and symptoms than ever before in history, the solution of-fered is to kill the person. Once again, human life is dehumanized and deval-ued. Finally, with a cry of racism, peo-ple are killing those sworn to “protect and defend” citizens. Certainly, there are some police officers who do not adhere to their oath. However, can ran-dom killing of police officers be justi-fied? Is there any logic to it? In a per-verse way, maybe there is some logic because it continues down the path started with the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. If our choices, or our lot in life, lead to situations that we don’t like, we eliminate (kill) the “problem”. These “solutions” aren’t valid. Inno-cent human life, at all stages, should be valued. “Life is like an arch. If you discard one segment as worthless, the span collapses…the value of ALL life brought low.” More info: LIFESPAN 734.422.6230

MEN’S RETREAT
Once again, ALL men of St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy are invited to the annual Men's Retreat at St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center, Detroit. A retreat is a special time to withdraw from the demands and challenges of daily life. It is an opportunity to rest, reevaluate life, and enjoy a real spiritual boost. A retreat is a precious opportunity to renew faith, to experience the loving presence of God and to seek the wisdom so necessary for good daily living. Be good to yourself. Come along with men from our parish and other parishes and find a new closeness to God in your life. Our retreat begins with dinner at 6:30 pm, Friday, Sep-tember 30, and ends after Mass about noon on Sunday, Oc-
tober 2. The retreat theme is: "Abide in Me: Choosing to Live Faithfully in an Era of Chaos". More information is available on line at: stpaulretreat.org, or phone the Re-treat Center at: 313-535-9563. Paul Markus (734-516-5842), or Doug Cyr (734-634-0719) can also help with questions or reservations. A $30 registration is required and may be made on line. Space is limited so don't wait too long to make a reservation. If the September 30 date does not fit your schedule, the same retreat is available on many weekends all the way through April next year.
