The Pastor’s Corner
Hope everyone is mindful to drink plenty of fluids during
these hot and humid days of midsummer. For many it’s time
for vacation or perhaps a shorter work week. This Sunday’s
gospel reflects on Jesus telling the Apostles (those who had
been sent, as we saw last week) to step away to rest and to have
some quiet time away from the crowds along the Sea of
Galilee. The crowds could see where they were going and
walked along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee to be
with Jesus again. They were lost, and he pitied them and
taught them about the kingdom.
Today’s first reading is an excellent meditation for me as
your shepherd. The Latin word, pastores, is the classic name
for a pastor. Jeremiah warns the evil pastors that the Lord
will punish them for their willful neglect of the sheep.
Next Sunday and continuing for five weeks, the short
Gospel of Mark is interrupted for the famous “Bread of Life
Discourse” in the Gospel of John, Chapter six. This teaching
on Jesus as the Bread of Life will provide an opportunity to
reflect on liturgical worship; both the Mass and private
devotion. Pray for all our priests, that we be good shepherds
of God’s people. May I strive to fulfill the duties given to me
at St. Margaret’s for over three years now.
The cult of the saints is a very important part of our
Catholic tradition. Do you know that many parishioners
think that the statue behind the pulpit is Our Lady? It is St.
Margaret, our patroness. Our marble statues of Mary and St.
Joseph are in the northern transept where the new pews were
installed. Sitting and praying in the church, speaking to staff,
consulting with Catholic Mutual Insurance, and very mindful
of our parish history, a custom for many Catholics will be
restored. Through the talent and skill of our parishioner,
Dennis Fagan, a rack of votive lamps will be placed between
the two statues as a place to ‘light a candle’ for your private
intentions. An offering of $2 is requested …but don’t take
the lighter!! Since we have a stone floor, the safety issue is
minimized. Please do not let your little children play near or
light the votive candles. We’ll see how it goes and re-evaluate it
in six months or so.
Enjoy every day of the summer!
Msgr. Darcy
