    First Sunday of Lent:

The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. But the bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the Sacrament of Baptism...that people place their gifts, their resources — their selves — at God’s service in and through the Church.”

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

BECAUSE OF THE Archdiocese’s need to schedule all parishes for the “Rite of Election”, our RCIA participants

celebrated at the “Rite of Sending Forth” here at our parish

last Sunday rather than this Sunday. In this celebration of

the “Rite of Sending Forth” our Catechumens and

Candidates were asked what they were seeking from the

Church. Our Catechumens then signed their names in our

Book of Elect showing their commitment to join the

Catholic Church. This ceremony always precedes the

    “Rite of Election”.

Our Catechumens, along with their sponsors and the Book

of Elect and our Candidates, are scheduled to participate

this weekend in the city-wide celebration called the “Rite

of Election” where the Archbishop will accept their public

commitment to continue with the final stages of RCIA.

These Catechumens are now called the Elect. This period

in Lent is an intense period in their spiritual journey. They

will be reflecting on their weaknesses and strengths in

their relationship with God. We ask that you pray for our

participants as you, too, examine your own lives and

    reflect on your faith.

If you are interested in learning more about RCIA, please

call the Faith Formation Office @ 433-2777 Ext 138 or

    Martin Schott @ 521-9079.

Altar Society — ST. JUDE AREA Meeting

The Altar Society’s St. Jude Area meeting will be

Thursday, March 8, at 10 a.m. in the St. Joseph

Room. Ladies, see you at the meeting! For more

information, call Mary Helen Saldivar at 433-7690.

    ALTAR SOCIETY BOARD MEETING

The Altar Society’s next Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 1, from 9:30 a.m. — 12 p.m. in the St. Joseph Room. The Altar Society is having open enrollment for new members, to help keep our Church Altar looking beautiful. The Altar Society sponsors events during the year to maintain costs. Bring a friend and join us. We always have a good time. New members are able to join as a group that can set a time for their meeting, if they so desire. Our March meeting will be the last meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph room. Our April 5 meeting will be held at Cha Cha’s Restaurant, at 2626 Babcock Rd., at 11 a.m. Installation will be held on May 3 at Oak Hills Country Club. More information to follow. Questions? Contact Yolanda Flores at 732-8820.

to become parishioners to formally register with

Catholic Relief Services: Operation Rice Bowl

In today’s first reading, we hear about God’s covenant with Noah, with his descendants and with all living creatures. During Lent, we are called to deepen and strengthen our baptismal and covenantal relationship with God, which includes our responsibility to care for God’s creation. This week through Operation Rice Bowl, we learn about subsistence farmers in Madagascar. We pray for all who struggle to feed their families on depleted lands, and we fast in solidarity with those who hunger. We give so that CRS can help farmers improve their growing methods and act as good stewards of God’s creation.

LIFE NIGHT PARENTAL NOTICE Parents, below is a list of topics that your youth will be discussing over the following Sundays. We would ask that you discuss these topics with your teens. Questions? Contact Liz Ortiz at 433-2777 ext. 119 or attend any of the Life Nights. Parents are always welcome.

3/4 Topic: News Feed Whether or not you are on Facebook, social media

has become a very big part of everyday life. For teens, social media sites are a default when they are bored or working on a project or homework. The ma-jority of their “friends,” or followers, they’ve never

met. As parents, it is important to keep an ongoing and open conversation about your teen’s use of so-cial media. At Life Night this week, we are discussing

the Eighth Commandment as it relates to media. We will challenge the teens to be people of integrity and use media in moderation with honesty and dignity. Here are a few discussion questions for the week: 1.

What role do Facebook or other social media sites play in your life? 2. Do you feel more connected to your friends on Facebook than our family? 3. In what

ways can I help you moderate your use of social me-dia and technology? 4. How do you see the Eighth Commandment as a good guardrail for the use of

    media?

Special thanks to Mr. Stephen Garza and Mr. Carlos Perez, members of the Men of Service who graciously supported our Young Adult Ministry on Saturday, Feb. 11, by providing a delicious barbeque lunch during their field day. It was wonderful to see so many young adults come together to enjoy healthy fun and to build community in our own sports field.

On Sunday, Feb. 13, Y.A.M. celebrated its one year anniversary of “Y.A.M. Nights” — a monthly gathering after the 4 o'clock Mass for all young adults to attend. We are so happy to be a part of this community! Thank you for all the support and love over the past year. We can’t wait to continue to serve and share God’s love!
