SCHOOL FEES REMINDER

FREE ADOS-2 ASSESSMENTS

Term 2 school fees were due on 13th May 2018. If you are having difficulty with payment please contact the school on 9487 1277 and ask to speak with the Business Office. Thank you

Twinky Arias Business Office

St Lucy’s has been contacted by Dr Anne Chalfant (Annie’s Centre) to offer the opportunity for free ADOS-2 assessments. Ideally they are looking for students who have an existing ASD diagnosis. It would be ideal for families who are looking for an updated report to support NDIS or other funding applications. Please note that this is not being run by St Lucy’s staff, or affiliated with the school in any way. See below for more details if you are interested:

“We are offering families free ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) assessments as well as a comprehensive report prepared Dr Anne Chalfant, Clinical Psychologist. The assessment could assist families by:• Providing them with a formal assessment and report that

might help with funding applications eg access or support with NDIS or as a part of school funding applications.

• Providing them with further clarity around their child’s diagnosis.

• Providing them with expert opinion from Dr Anne Chalfant about their child’s social communication strengths and challenges, which could inform treatment planning/ fine tuning.

Families willing to participate would attend an ADOS-2 assessment at Macquarie University with Dr Anne Chalfant. Assessments would be conducted either by Dr Chalfant alone or in conjunction with a small team of medical and allied health professionals eg Paediatricians, Child Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologist, Speech Pathologists under Dr Chalfant’s direct supervision.

Assessments will be conducted from 11:30am-1pm during the week of Monday 30th July, daily until Thursday 2nd August, 2018.

Please contact Dr Anne Chalfant directly if you think you might be interested in participating in these assessments by emailing [email protected]. You will be assisting professionals in fine tuning the use of the gold standard tool for assessing Autism. You will also gain valuable information about your child from an internationally regarded clinician at no cost to you.

Kind Regards,Miriam Fraser Psychologist/School Counsellor

Siblings Day today is a great example of community where our students show off their school to their brothers and sisters and they in turn learn about our school as a community compared to their own school.

The Hope Mass this Sunday 17 June is another occasion where our links with faith and our local parish demonstrate our spiritual connection together. Feel free to come along at 9.15am at Holy Name for this friendly and relaxed service of worship where our children get involved and are accepted in a very inclusive community of believers.

So continue to enjoy our community in all its multi-faceted character.

LORETO STAFF VOLUNTEER DAYLast Friday, a wonderful group of staff from Loreto Normanhurst attended St Lucy’s for a staff volunteer day. They were all enthusiastic and keen to interact with our students. The staff attended our assembly, cleaned all the CA windows and gallery (any piece of glass they could find!) as well as doing the uniform stocktake, cleaning out the bike sheds and gave the Art Studio a good tidy too!

THERAPY UPDATEWeek 7? Really? Where did the time go?

Mel and I just ran our workshop on Alternative and Augmentative Communication. It was a small but enthusiastic group and a great opportunity to learn. The next workshop is on Wednesday 20th June, which is on Key Word Sign. If there are any topics you’d like to see covered in future workshops, or anything which would make it easier for you to participate in our workshops, please let me know

For weeks 7 and 8, we’re focussing on the word “like”. We’re talking about it in morning song, practicing the sign together, and using it around the school. Here’s a link to the video we’re watching in morning song each day, starring lots of wonderful students and staff from St Lucy’s - https://tinyurl.com/stlucyslike

If you’re looking for a good model of any sign, I would always suggest checking out the Auslan Signbank. Here’s a link to their entry for “like”. http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/like-1.html

‘Like’ is a great word for sharing our preferences. The cool thing about the sign for ‘like’ is that it’s exactly the same as the sign for ‘don’t like’ but with different accompanying facial expressions and body language (ie. Look happier for ‘like’ and slightly disgusted for ‘don’t like’). As such, it can be a good opportunity for helping kids to tune in to those aspects of facial expression and body language which they might sometimes miss. Let me know if you have any little breakthroughs focussing on this word

W sitting = child’s bottom is between their legs, knees are bent and rotated away from their body.

Why do our kids sit like this?

• It widens their base of support and lowers their centre of gravity. It is a convenient position as kids do not have to work hard in maintaining this position as they do not need to activate any core muscles.

Why is this a problem?

• This position limits trunk rotation. This results in midline crossing difficulties, trouble establishing hand dominance and balance difficulties.

• This can result in pigeon toe walking, as hip muscles become shorter and tighter

• Pain in their pelvis

What can you do?

• Encourage alternative sitting: side sit, long sit (legs in front), pretzel/ring sitting or sitting on a bench

• Work on improving core strength

• Verbal prompts to break bad habits

All the best, Steve Davies Speech Pathologist /Head of Therapy Services

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND PASTORAL CARE

St Lucy’s Sacramental Program: This week, we began the first of three sessions in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation with Sr Helen facilitating. We have five students preparing for this Sacrament and they are Tayla, Ollie, Kwasi, Alex and Will. At our first session, we sang a song ‘A Gift To You’ and then we listened to Sr Helen talk to us about being God’s gift. We saw our special reflection in the magic box and then drew a picture of us as God’s gift. We then sang another song ‘God Loves You and I Love You’ before being blessed with the special oil and receiving a tap on the cheek. It was a lovely experience!

We ask that you keep these children, and their families, in your prayers over the coming weeks.

HOPE Mass: You are all welcome to attend the HOPE Mass this coming Sunday 17th June at 9.15am. This Mass will take place at Holy Name Church, Wahroonga and is a beautiful Mass which is dynamic and inclusive and embraces one and

all! We look forward to seeing you there.

St Lucy’s Family Mass: Come along and join us for our next St Lucy’s Family Mass on Friday 22nd June at 5.30pm. This Mass takes place here at school and is led by Fr David. The format of the Mass is one that our children love and respond to. The Stage One and Stage Three classes will be hosting this Mass, and one of our students Lachlan, and his younger brother Louis, will be Baptised at this Mass which is very special! We look forward to seeing you there.

Congratulations! A big congratulations to Addison (Whirlpool Class) who became a big sister for the first time this week! She now has a beautiful little brother, Oscar. Such lovely news for Addison and her parents.

Wishing you peace and blessings!Vanessa Dillon.

We give thanks for the blessing of Winter:A Season to cherish the heart.

To make warmth and quiet for the heart. To make soups and broths for the heart.

To cook for the heart and read for the heart. To curl up softly and nestle with the heart.

To sleep deeply and gently at one with the heart. To dream with the heart.

To spend time with the heart.A long, long time of peace with the heart. We give thanks for the blessing of winter:

Season to cherish the heart.Amen

As we find ourselves well and truly within the season of Winter, we become mindful of the little gifts that God provides during this time.

The crisp mornings; the stillness in the air; the vibrance of the blue in the sky; the stark branches in contrast to the green; the fog and mist; and the dew upon the ground.

May we use this time to slow the pace of our busy lives and embrace the warmth that we seek.

Percussionistas performing at Parliament HouseCongratulations to our drumming group, The Percussionistas for their outstanding efforts playing at the St Lucy’s Parliament House fundraising lunch last Friday. The students were excited to be a part of this special day, and had been rehearsing very hard with their drumming teachers, Shancel Leacey and Lynne Pinker. We are very proud of how well every student conducted themselves on the day, particularly accounting for the nervousness they may have felt performing in front of so many people. They filled the room with their energy and enthusiasm as always! A huge thank you to Shancel Leacey and Lynne Pinker for all their hard work in preparing the students for this special event.

What’s happening in the art studioEveryone has been very busy in the Art Studio - we’ve been collaborating on paintings, making paper mache fruit bowls in art project, and incorporating musical instruments into our soundscapes! There’s no rest for these talented artists!
