ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC HAPPENINGS
Our Sunday bulle n is an important way for us to communicate with you, especially during these days of the Coronavirus pandemic. It might be the only way that we can reach some of you. Every bulle n that you receive is paid for through the generosity of the businesses that you see adver sed on the back cover. Most of these adver sers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. We urge you to think of them when you decide to have a meal or other item delivered to your door. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their adver sements in the bulle n. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. Together we can help each other make it through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS TO OVERCOME RACISM Archbishop José H. Gomez has joined the Catholic bishops of California in a special presenta on of the Sta ons of the Cross to overcome racism in our hearts and society. The video, is available at h ps://lacatholics.org/ and the Diocese of San Diego’s Youtube channel. Bishops from throughout the state of California created video to draw a en on to the sin of racism and ask God’s help in elimina ng it It is led by Archbishop José Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and includes the leaders of all 12 California (arch)dioceses and the two Catholic eparchies. “As we pray today, we recall that our Church and our local community here have been shaped by the faith and the gi s of African Americans from the beginning,” prayed Archbishop Gomez. “So let us ask our Lord today to bring us closer as brothers and sisters, and con nue to build the family of God here in California and everywhere in our na on and world.” Archbishop Gomez introduced the special prayer from St. Odilia parish in South Los Angeles – the first African American Catholic Church established in the west built by African Americans as a beacon of faith, hope and love. The parish, established in 1926, is a hub for social and religious ac vi es in the community. Many African American Catholic families from throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles can trace their family’s Catholic roots back to St. Odilia’s. Anderson Shaw, Director of the Archdiocese’s African American Catholic Center for Evangeliza on, led the opening prayer. Each of the 14 Sta ons of the Cross – reflec ng on the persistent sin of racism as a rejec on of the full humanity of the children of God – was led by a bishop of a California Catholic diocese at per nent loca ons throughout California. The Sixth Sta on was prayed at the Fruitvale BART sta on in the Diocese of Oakland. The Diocese of San Diego presented the tenth Sta on of the Cross in cen-tral San Diego where the headquarters of the KKK stood in 1920. h ps://www.cacatholic.org/california-bishops-hold-%E2%80%9Cvirtual%E2%80%9D-sta ons-cross-draw-a en on-sin-racism

These apostles share a feast as founders of the church in Rome. Peter, a Galilean fisherman chosen by Christ as one of the Twelve Apostles, became the undisputed leader of the fledgling church a er Pentecost. Paul, a Pharisee and Roman ci zen who had persecuted Chris ans, became a er his drama c conversion the church's greatest missionary, its "apostle of the gen les." By tradi on both were martyred in Rome. Their adventures are recounted in the Acts of the Apostles, and le ers from them are included in the New Testament. h ps://catholiccurrent.org/saints/saints-peter-and-paul-apostles/ .

June 28, 2020 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Chris an love. We do what we can do, and God takes no ce. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been bap zed into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Some mes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether different but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspira on for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his doctorate in theology en tled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his reless traveling, drama c preaching, and peniten al austerity converted thousands of na ve peoples. Saving souls and celebra ng the sacraments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his only one. Educa on in le ers and cra s, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irriga on systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authori es or without controversy in the retrospec vely cri cal eye of history. But when John Paul II bea fied him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assis ng his converts to use their new faith to advance their true human development. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. DID YOU KNOW?
Prevent underage drinking
The Na onal Ins tute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that nearly 5,000 children under the age of 21 die from alcohol-related incidents every year. Studies show that children as young as 12 may be exposed to alcohol and drugs, and nearly 75% of high school seniors have tried alcohol at least once. Talk to your children about alcohol and the risks of underage drinking. Partner with other parents who see your children regularly, and make sure you are all on the same page about keeping children from drinking. Parents should also serve as posi ve role models for safe drinking behaviors. For more informa on, visit stopalcoholabuse.gov.
For more informa on on other ways to keep kids safe, contact Linda Filkins, the Parish Safeguard Commi ee Chairperson at (626) 214-7846 or the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children Office at (213) 637-7227. For par cular help, call the Vic ms Assistance Office at (213) 637-7650.
