In 1996 the US Catholic Bishops published, Economic Jus ce for All: Pastoral Le er on Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy. It opens with:

“We are believers called to follow our Lord Jesus Christ and proclaim his Gospel in the midst of a complex and powerful economy. This reality poses both opportuni es and responsibili es for Catholics in the United States. Our faith calls us to measure this economy not only by what it produces, but also by how it touches human life and whether it protects or undermines the dignity of the human person. Economic decisions have human consequences and moral content; they help or hurt people, strengthen, or weaken family life, advance or diminish the quality of jus ce in our land.”

The Covid 19 pandemic has exposed cracks in our economy that has le some Americans behind. This should be disturbing to all Catholics. Everyone in the United States has suffered during this me of staying safe at home, closed schools, closed Churches, wearing masks when we leave our houses, and the disrup on to our daily lives. However, some segments of our economy have been able to work from home. Most of these have been be er paying, so-called white-collar jobs. Others, considered essen al workers, have con nued to work – though at greater risk to themselves and their families. Americans who worked for minimum or close to minimum wages did not have any cushion to fall back on when their jobs disappeared. Small business owners and their employees are taking the brunt of the hit to their economic security. The nature of small businesses, par cularly individually or family owned, are riskier enterprises with minimal investment to rely upon. The working poor of America are frequently one paycheck away from losing their homes, usually rented. They have less access to decent health care. O en over the threshold for Medi-Cal, but unable to afford insurance premiums, they have used emergency rooms as their primary health care. It is these Americans who have been financially devastated.

The one- me payment of $1200 from the Federal government was a step in the right direc on, but that money did not go far and has long been exhausted. The food pantries and schools’ food giveaways are also a step in the right direc on, plus the new P-EBT program will help school families and Medi-Cal recipients. But not everyone has Medi-Cal and they are in danger of going hungry.

It is hard to know what to do. The problem of inequality has existed all along, but it was hidden to most of us. It is not hidden anymore, and we have a responsibility to work on a solu on. The pastoral le er details what is required for economic jus ce, so those should be the ac ons with which we should concern ourselves. They are as follows. 1. Every economic decision and ins tu on must be judged in light of whether it protects or undermines the dignity of the human person. 2. Human dignity can be realized and protected only in community. 3. All people have a right to par cipate in the economic life of society. 4. All members of society have a special obliga on to the poor and vulnerable. 5. Human rights are the minimum condi ons for life in community. 6. Society as a whole, ac ng through public and private ins tu ons, has the moral responsibility to enhance human dignity and protect human rights.

Today, we celebrate Pentecost. We have received the advocate promised us by Jesus. The gi s of the Holy Spirit are ours to strive for: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, For tude and Knowledge will be needed to correct these inequali es that have been exposed. Let us call upon the Holy Spirit for courage and strength to tackle this problem.

CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP Catholic Men’s Fellowship of St. Louise de Marillac will resume their regularly scheduled Thursday Night Mee ngs via Zoom. Please join us to strengthen each other in faith and hope in Our Lord, Jesus.

When fear and uncertainty looms over our world, let us come together once again to pray, reflect, and provide fellowship in the Lord’s presence so that we can be a beacon of hope to those around us.

For more informa on, please contact: Gil Alderete at [email protected] Francisco Munoz at [email protected].

Guidelines for Churches to reopen have been issued and Archbishop Gomez has worked closely with the Los Angeles County Supervisors, the City of Los Angeles and the Public Health Department to determine when he will be able to set a date to safely reopen Catholic churches.

It is possible that we might first open the Church for private devo ons limited to small numbers of people. Confessions may be outside – perhaps on the Msgr. Pierce Hall pa o. At this point we know that a endance for each Mass will be limited to 100 people in the church building. We are exploring the possibility of streaming to the parish hall, or hos ng addi onal Masses in the parish hall, or even the possibility of people staying in their vehicles for Mass.

Prior to opening, each parish will be required to submit a plan to the Regional Bishop’s Office for approval, using the guidelines provided by the Archdiocese and Health Department. We are currently con nuing to work on our plan to be able to reopen our Church. If all goes well, it is possible we will reopen within the next week or two. Any reopening will likely be staged, with devo ons first, then weekday Masses, and finally Sunday Masses.

New safety prac ces and different considera ons to accommodate Mass, while keeping everyone safe, will be our top priority. Some prac ces will be the same ones you are familiar with, for example, wearing a mask or prac cing social distancing. There will also be some specific worship related guidelines for items like receiving Holy Communion or how to clean the church a er each use. We will need everyone’s coopera on.

Even when the church is opened for liturgies or devo ons, the Archbishop has indicated that he will extend the dispensa on from a ending Sunday Mass for a period of me. That will enable those who are uncomfortable with returning or who have good reason to not a end Mass in person, par cularly the elderly or those with suppressed immune systems, to be comfortable that they are s ll in God’s good grace.

We an cipate needing volunteers to assist us when we can reopen. If you think you can help us with some of the tasks we an cipate, such as cleaning the church or giving direc ons to parishioners and guests, please contact the Parish Center. We are star ng to create a list of volunteers and will reach out to you when more details are available.

Finally, please con nue to check the parish website frequently for ongoing informa on and updates. The parish website is www.stlouisedm.org.

Please con nue to pray for the successful reopening of our church and for all of those impacted by the pandemic.

GRAND RAFFLE

Well no once can say that 2020 has been a year of normal programs and ac vi es. We have encountered something that none of us would have ever thought was possible, and yet here we are in the midst of it. Our churches are closed, our programs are postponed or are moving to new methods of communica on. So what does this all mean for all of us and especially those who are seeking to journey toward Sacraments and a deeper rela onship with Christ?

We must reach out via our media, notes, phone calls, to those who need us! We may not be able to shake hands, give hugs, etc., but we can s ll give encouragement, share our faith, watch livestreamed Masses and videos from various Church sources. We all hope that this will not last much longer, but we have to be flexible and do our best.

We were not able to administer the Sacraments during Easter Vigil this year, but our RCIA members will receive them as soon as we are able to gather and celebrate with them.

Our young folks were not able to receive their First Communion or Confirma on, but they will as soon as we are able.

Have faith that God is watching out for all of us and guiding His Church. We must not despair.

If you or someone you know is seeking to find God, know more about the Catholic faith, or needs to complete their Sacra-ments of Ini a on, we would love to hear from you. We can par cipate with you in your journey, maybe not in the most tradi onal way right now, but we can and will journey with you.

You can call the Parish Office at 626-915-7873 or you can call Kathy Pres a at 626-963-1463.

God Bless.

SAINT CHARLES LWANGA AND HIS COMPANIONS (MARTYED 1886-87) June 3

“Master of Pages,” reputedly the handsomest man in all Uganda, Charles Lwanga, lay catechist, courageously led about forty teenaged boys, Catholics and Anglicans, on a forty-mile forced march to martyrdom for their common Chris an faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different churches, they strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead. King Mwanga, himself barely twenty, had ordered them executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages were the king’s male harem, who, now Chris ans, refused what pious accounts demurely describe as his “unreasonable demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned alive; the youngest, thirteen-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had o en shielded from the King’s lust; the most tragic, Saint Mbaga, whose father was his execu oner! In 1964, Paul VI canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican companions, recalling the heroism of early Chris anity’s African martyrs, which we modern Chris ans of far less faith never expected to see repeated. Forty years a er the Pope’s words, what does our faith cost us? Heroism aside, how generous is our response? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co Photo: h ps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Lwanga

Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from me to me on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arres ng details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems

mid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. SOCIAL TEACHING:GLOBAL SOLIDARITY Catholic social teaching consists of a wide range of principles, from the dignity of the human person, to economic jus ce, environmental stewardship, and the rights and responsibili es of each person. The final principle looks at social jus ce from the most macro level: Global Solidarity and Development. The principle teaches that the common good we work toward must transcend na onal and global boundaries. We must ul mately see ourselves connected to every human being, and working with them for the good of all. This is, admi edly, a lo y goal that's hard to achieve. But, as the Church taught in the Sacred Cons tu on on the Church in the Modern World, at the Second Va can Council: “All must consider it their sacred duty to count social obliga ons among their chief du es today and observe them as such. For the more closely the world comes together, the more widely do people's obliga ons transcend par cular groups and extend to the whole world. This will be realized only if individuals and groups prac ce moral and social virtues and foster them in social living. Then, under the necessary help of divine grace, there will arise a genera on of new women and men, the molders of a new humanity.” (GeS #30) A lo y goal indeed. But remember, the purpose of all the principles of Catholic social teaching is not to describe the world as it is, but to guide us toward the world as we wish it to be. Short of the Kingdom of God, these principles may seem idealis c. But it remains a crucial part of the Church's mission to encourage us all to work toward a more just, more peaceful world. h ps://catholiccurrent.org/fact-of-faith/social-teaching-global-solidarity/

MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH June 1

On February 11, 2018, the Congrega on for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments inscribed a new obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, into the General Roman Calendar. This memorial is celebrated every year on the Monday a er Pentecost. La n liturgical texts were also promulgated the same day. O God, Father of mercies, whose Only Bego en Son, as he hung upon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, his Mother, to be our Mother also, grant, we pray, that with her loving help your Church may be more frui ul day by day and, exul ng in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of the peoples. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. —https://catholiccurrent.org/twim-0627/memorial-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-mother-of-the-church/

DID YOU KNOW? Teach children how to explain inappropriate behavior

Sta s cs show that children may tell their story of abuse to adults as many as nine mes before someone recognizes what is being disclosed and takes ac on. An important part of empowering children to protect themselves from abuse is giving them the right language to explain inappropriate or uncomfortable behaviors they may encounter. A child who can describe what happened to make him feel violated or uneasy can much more easily communicate with trusted adults to stop a predator, or end a poten ally dangerous situa on.
