JULOCON 2017 - MOVING TOWARDS A PAPERLESS CLASSROOM

Paperless course content – handouts and resources Any digital file you want to distribute to students can be uploaded on to the STL link in one of two spots:

1) Via email

2) Learning site:- benefits: available to

everyone / multiple classes, can easily embed media directly into the page, multi-ple file types can be uploaded, easy to design page

3) Schoolbox class page: - benefits: available to

a single class, can embed media directly into the page (but it depends on the source), multiple file types can be up-loaded, easy to de-sign page

- the task-specific sheets can also be added to each ‘due work’ assessment item so that the stu-dents know exactly where to find the task sheet for each task.

- You can add links to any form of digital content – and to any pages on the Learning site as well!

Paperless submissions through Schoolbox

Why? reduce paper usage across the school, make better use of the de-vices that the students all have, can track when students have submitted their work, can have feedback saved on their devices to review at a later stage

Social StreamStudents can upload files or links directly (click and drag or via Google/One/iCloud drive to the Social Stream component on your Schoolbox class page:- benefits: other students can see the links and files; promotes a student

agency through the sharing of ideas with their peers- disadvantages: other students can see the links and files - this is not

ideal for assessment pieces

File DropboxStudents can submit digital files for you to retrieve via the File Dropbox

component available to add to your Schoolbox class page:- benefits: other students can’t see the files- disadvantages: they are not tied to the assessment item, so it is harder

for you to keep track of them

CourseOutline or Due Work componentsStudents can submit digital files for a specific assessment piece for you to retrieve either via the Course Outline component or the Assessments

tab (at the top):- benefits: other students can’t see the files; linked di-

rectly to a task; able to be graded using inline grader or Adobe, or be printed; can track when files were sub-

mitted and who is yet to submit, etc.- disadvantages: may take a bit longer for you to mark

Paperless Classroom - setting up tasks that allow for online submissions

1. Add a new ‘due work’ item to your course.

2. Include any necessary task sheets/descriptions/rubrics.

3. Under the ‘Submissions’ heading, change the option for ‘Accepts Online Submis-sion?’ from none to single or multiple. Multiple is often the easier option, as stu-dents often want to resubmit for whatever reason. It also means that if the task has multiple components, they can be uploaded separately from individual apps or programs.

4. Change the ‘due date’ to be when you would like the work to be sub-mitted by, and change the ‘late date’ to be when you would like the submit but-ton to disappear from stu-dent view. After this date/time, they will need to email you with an excuse and a copy of their work, or submit a hard copy in class.

5. You can choose to use an electronic rubric if you want by changing the ‘Use Rubric?’ to yes, but setting them up can be a little bit of a challenge.
