St. Justin Is Number One: Kittos “We are not rejoicing because we took the first position but because our names are written in heaven.” (paraphrasing Lk 10:20) Bishop Cantú requested last month that all the parishes in San Jose support their priests in the Rev Up the Sems Fun Run, a healthy and fun competition taking place in June. The funds raised would be used to support the training of our seminarians in the major seminary. The money would also be used to foster vocations in the diocese.
I told Fr. Chris my plan to bring out a table after Mass one Sunday, and to ask people to support us for the run. He agreed and suggested that I could stand at the back of the church or by the side of the rectory. I took his advice. In the morning Masses I stood by the side of the church because the sun isn’t out; in the afternoon I stood at the back of the church, waiting for our loyal parishioners to come and donate toward the event.
We were not informed of any competition towards the fundraising; rather, it was an activity we did in love of the Church, because we would like to support our seminarians and the diocese, in her goal to raise more priests for the service of God’s people and Holy Mother Church. Without any penchant for victory or competition, many of us (visitors and parishioners of St. Justin) donated towards the cause.
The D-day, June 22nd, was a hot one. The temperature was expected to rise to 96 degrees. We all arrived at the Bellarmine College Prep track. The race took off by 8.30 a.m. and ended by 9:30 a.m. In attendance were the who-is-who in the San Jose diocese: Bishop Oscar Cantú, Bishop Emeritus PJ McGrath,
Bishop Emeritus Carlos Sevilla (Yakima), visiting Archbishop Valerian Okeke of the diocese of Onitsha, Nigeria, the priests and the lay faithful were in their hundreds. There were songs and sounds of good music (ABBA, Queen’s We are the Champions, etc) booming all over the field.
The organizers of the event, Fr. Ritche Bueza and company, said that they had some awards to give out. I was talking to Fr. James when someone tapped my
shoulder and said they are calling you. I looked toward the podium and everybody was looking at me. I was agitated; I thought maybe my noisemaking was disrupting the program. The MC announced again, “The priest who raised the most funds is Fr. Gerald Nwafor from St. Justin.” I ran like a wildfire to the stage and received my trophy from Bishop Cantú.
For me, that was the highlight of the occasion. St. Justin is the true
champion. Today we have proved our love for the Church because we obeyed the command of her Alter-Christus. We are rejoicing because our names are written in the book of life. On my part and on behalf of Fr. Chris, I say, KIITOS, GRACIAS, SALAMAT, CẢM ƠN, THANKS and DALU.

relationship with Christ.
Ongoing Faith Formation Program will Resume in September!
These classes meet on Sunday morning. Registration forms will be available at st-justin.org or in the Parish Office. We will mail out registration forms for returning families in August.
Sacramental Preparation Program First Reconciliation and First Eucharist
You may register for this program if your child has already completed one year of Ongoing Faith Formation or is enrolled in a Catholic school. This program is for baptized children in 2nd grade and higher. Registration begins in August and is supplemental to Ongoing Faith Formation.
High School Confirmation Program
This program begins in September and culminates with the Sacrament of Confirmation in May. The candidate sessions take place on Sundays, 5:30-7:00 p.m. Registration begins in August and is limited to 22 students.
RCIA (adapted for children) If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults adapted for children. Please contact Mary Kane at [email protected] for more information.
CLOW (Children’s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, July 16th at 6:30-8:30pm in the
PMC. Come with any questions that you may have about faith, religion, and the
Catholic Church. This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized
Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the Sunday readings and includes

Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place Sunday, July 14th beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO.
Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer via email at [email protected] or at 408-296-1193 extension 109.
Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of July, we will continue to request canned Soup, Ravioli, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of size 5 and size 6 diapers. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the locals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious coincidence, the appointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the experience of worship situated us in community, and evoked a commitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life. —James Field, Copyright © J. Founding Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose Pierre DuMaine passed
away peacefully

Born to Eternal Life ~ June 13, 2019
Roland Pierre DuMaine, son of Nolan Amidee DuMaine and Mary Eulalia Burch, was born in Paducah, Kentucky on August 2, 1931.
After attending Saint Mary’s Academy in Paducah and Holy Family School in Glendale, California, he entered Saint Joseph’s College Seminary, Mountain View, and Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park.
Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 15, 1957, Father DuMaine served as assistant pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Belmont before he was assigned to graduate studies at the Catholic University of America, from 1958-1961. After receiving a doctoral degree in Education, he served on the faculty of Catholic University and Serra High School in San Mateo, was Archdiocesan Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Superintendent from 1965 until 1978, having been named a Prelate of Honor of his Holiness (Monsignor) in 1972.
Bishop DuMaine was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco on June 29, 1978, serving in that capacity until March 18, 1981, when he became the Founding Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose.
Amidst great difficulties, Bishop DuMaine succeeded in the largest privately funded renewal project of downtown San Jose: the restoration of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph. These efforts insured that the Cathedral Basilica survived the 1989 earthquake and became what it is to this very day: the crown jewel of downtown San Jose.
On November 27, 1999, the Holy See accepted the bishop’s request for retirement. After retirement, he served as visiting professor at both Santa Clara University and Stanford University. Bishop DuMaine will long be remembered for his dedication to the teachings and principles put forth by the Second Vatican Council. Among these were the call to holiness that is extended to all the baptized, the inclusion of lay and religious women and men in decision-making positions within the Church, and a commitment to Catholic Education and Formation in all of its forms.
A visionary who recognized the significant role of technology in social communications and the Church’s mission of evangelization, Bishop DuMaine served as chair of the United States Bishops’ Committee on Communications, as a member of the Pontifical Commission on Social Communications, and as a director and longtime supporter of the Catholic Television Network (CTN), a closed-circuit network serving Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the dioceses of San Jose and Oakland.
He was a man of great intelligence and wit and will long be missed by his family and by his many friends and collaborators.
