Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever felt called to do something? Perhaps it was the moment you realized you were called to a life vocation--marriage, priesthood, or consecrated life, for example--or when you recognized a call to a particular career. Maybe it was a time when you felt called to a certain kind of service or ministry, or to care for the needs of a family member or good friend. The truth is, we are all chosen as Christ's people, called to share in Christ's mission of love, to "exist for the praise of his glory," as we hear in the Letter to the Ephesians today. In today's first reading, Amos tells how he was called from the life of the shepherd to that of the prophet; in the Gospel we hear how the disciples were called out to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. CALLED TO MISSION As baptized Christians, each of us is called to mission. When Catholics hear the word "mission," most usually think of those who go to foreign countries to serve and share their faith. Some might also think of a parish mission, a time of focused reflection, usually led by a visiting speaker. Remember the often-quoted line from Mission Impossible, "Your mission, should you choose to accept it"? Sometimes we use the word mission to describe our purpose or goal, what we have been charged to do. Thinking of mission in this way makes our call as Christians clearer. Our mission is to live as Christian people, to share our faith, to be people of service, and to
show Christ's love to others in the ways that we live our daily lives. The choice to live as people of mission is ours. How do you, or will you, live as a person of mission?
CALLED TOGETHER Notice that the disciples in today's Gospel were sent out two by two. This was not only a practical thing for Jesus to do as he sent the disciples out to preach, teach, and heal. It was also very spiritual, for being sent on mission together with another engenders mutual support. We live and grow in faith in deeper and more lasting ways when we are in community with others. Not only is our relationship with Jesus personal, it is also communal--we are drawn into communion with Christ, through and with the community of faith. Being part of a community offers us the strength and perspective found in relationship with others. We find support, encouragement, and consolation in trying times; we more readily challenge one another to live the gospel call to follow Jesus with our lives. What is your mission? With whom are you called? Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry's eldest daughter, Mary, restored the "old religion" in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called "Bloody Mary" for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called "recusants," from a Latin word meaning "refuse," since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim "Recusancy" as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

STAND AND BE COUNTED
Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be
part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you
advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner
makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,
weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and
Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a
registered, active and contributing member.
So, are you a registered parishioner?
If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in
the Parish Ministry Center or online at www.st-justin.org
God’s grace comes in unexpected, surprising ways, says Pope Francis
_____________________________________________________________________ VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- God does not conform to people's expecta-tions, and he often presents himself and his graces in surprising ways, Pope Francis said.
"God does not conform himself to preconceptions. We have to make an effort to open our hearts and minds to accept the divine reality that presents itself to us," the pope said before praying the Angelus to those gathered in St. Peter's Square July 8.
For example, the pope said, the people of Nazareth could not understand how Jesus, a simple carpenter with no formal education, could perform miracles and outdo even the scribes with his teachings.
Being so familiar with Jesus' family and modest roots, the residents go from being in awe to being incredulous at what the Lord had to say, Pope Francis said.
"Instead of opening themselves up to reality, they are scandalized," he said, because in their minds, God would never lower himself to speak through such an ordinary man.
"It's the scandal of the incarnation," which still exists today, he said, when people have preconceived notions about God, which keep them from recognizing him.
"It's about having faith; the lack of faith is an obstacle to God's grace. Many baptized live as if Christ didn't exist -- they repeat the gestures and signs of faith, but these do not correspond to a real bond to the person of Jesus and his Gospel," he said.
"The Lord invites us to adopt an approach of humble listening and waiting meekly because God's grace often presents itself to us in surprising ways that do not match our expectations," he added.
St. Teresa of Kolkata is a good example of this, he said. She was a petite, poor nun who -- with prayer and good works -- did miraculous, great things and "revolutionized the charitable work of the church."
"She is an example for our day," the pope said, asking that people open themselves up to God's grace, truth, mission and mercy, "which is meant for everyone, without anyone excluded."

MSDYR Theme: The theme for the Middle School Diocesan Youth Retreat (MSDYR) is "Venture," which means a risky or daring journey. The theme will be exploring the wilderness of faith and traversing the path of Christ's love; particularly, his powerful, courageous, and infinite love. To walk by faith is never an easy task, but to walk it together makes it a lighter load. We will encourage the middle school youth to turn their obstacles into opportunities and explore the beauty in the midst of chaos.
