Time and again Paul is inspired by a messy problem to gain a fresh insight. In one memorable instance, he is forced to defend himself for not having vis-ited the Christian community at Corinth as promised. He was accused of saying “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time. His rather indignant re-sponse leads him on to declare: “... the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you… was not ‘Yes and No’; but in him it is always ‘Yes.’ For in him every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.’”
How simple but profound to say that Jesus is “Yes”! He is both God’s “Yes” to humanity, and humanity’s “Yes” to God. Jesus is the definitive divine human “Yes”.
This word of a single syllable is immensely rich in meaning. We see this in the wonderful early Christian hymn cited by Paul in his letter to the Philippi-ans (in today’s 2nd Reading). He wants them to be a “Yes” like Christ: “In your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus”.
Both Ezekiel (1st Reading) and Jesus (Gospel) assure us that even when our first word is “No”, God has the last word, and it is “Yes”.

Church Pews for Sale! Only 5 Left As part of the refurbishment of the Church, the cur-
rent pews are being replaced by chairs. So this pro-
vides an opportunity for you or any one you know to
purchase a pew or two! Perfect for your decking area,
your backyard, a school playground or even your fami-
ly room!
Those that were donated in the first place and have a
plaque on them have been offered to those families
(where it is possible to contact them), if they would
like to have them. If not, the plaques have been re-
moved and will be displayed elsewhere in the church.
The pews that are left are 3 metres long. They are
$90 each (roughly the cost of one new chair).
If you would like to purchase one or more, please
write your name on the list at the back of the church.

Reformation 500 - Joint Catholic-
Lutheran Service Of Commemoration “In commemorating the 500th anniversary of the
beginning of the Reformation this year, Catholics
and Lutherans can now do so because the Holy Spir-
it has lead them on a journey from conflict into
deeper communion. So from this vantage point the
beginnings of the Reformation will be rightly remem-
bered when Lutherans and Catholics hear together
the Gospel of Jesus Christ and allow themselves to
be called anew into community with the Lord. I in-
vite you to Evening Prayer together at St Johns Lu-
theran Church. It is a time when Lutherans and
Catholics can jointly rediscover the power of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ in our time.”
Archbishop Denis Hart , Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne
The service will feature liturgy from “Common Prayer:
From Conflict to Communion” and the Bach cantata "O
ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe" (BWV 34).
