PASTOR’S CORNER Even as Jesus is being cornered and tested by the Pharisees he is able to respond calmly with lessons that are important for all of us to hear. Jesus expresses to us that the most important thing we can do in life is to love God, and through the power of that love, to strive to love others. The reading from Exodus reminds us that love involves never doing any harm to others. Jesus, by word and example always brought help and healing for others, especially those who were suffering or victimized in any way. The lessons of Christ the Teacher and Servant are universal and endure down through the ages so that we can become a more compassionate, peaceful and just world. As the Word of God touches our hearts may we be inspired and inspire one another by our actions in loving God and all people.

—Fr. Ed Stafford

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week we have in All Souls' Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday's grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The "Day of the Dead" is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life's sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead.

COOKIE DONATIONS FOR PRISON MINISTRY RETREAT The Catholic prison m i n i s t r y t e a m a t Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg is holding a Spiritual Weekend Retreat November 2-5 for Catholic inmates. In addition to your prayers for their 6th successful weekend retreat, the ministry team is asking for donations of cookies. The participants love homemade cookies—the bigger the better! This is the only time they are able to receive these special treats. We’ve been told that Mantua has the best cookie donations! If you’d like to donate cookies, simply drop them off on disposable plates at the Parish Office absolutely no later than Wednesday, November 1 (you may also bring them to the 7:00 p.m. Mass for All Saints). Please call the Parish Office (330-274-2253) or Pat Smith (330-274-8335) with any questions.

IN REMEMBRANCE The Church has a long tradition of remembering those who have died, to the love and mercy of God. We do this in a special way on the Feast of All Souls’ Day observances and throughout November. Our Book of the Names of the Dead is in the Narthex during October for you to add the names of loved ones who have passed away.

This is a Holy Day of Obligation on which we ce lebrate the Church Triumphant -- all the Saints in Heaven, canonized or unknown. Let us rejoice in all the men and women, blest in the eyes of the Lord, who celebrate the heavenly liturgy. They stand in God's holy place and sing of the love the Father has bestowed upon them through the blood of the Lamb.

MAJOR CHURCH CLEANING It’s been quite a number of years since we’ve had a major cleaning of our worship space. As a jumpstart to all our holidays coming up and before we all get too busy with our own holiday preparations, we’re planning a cleaning day on Saturday, November 4, starting at 8:30 a.m. In addition to our faithful church cleaners, this event is open to all of our parishioners who would like to help. Also, a great opportunity for those needing service hours fulfilled. Tasks include wiping down the pews using Murphy’s Oil Soap, washing windows, and getting rid of as many cobwebs as possible. All cleaning products will be provided but rags and pails are needed. If you’d like to bring your special tools to clean with, by all means, do so. Pizza and drinks will be provided for lunch afterwards.

SET YOUR CLOCKS Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 5. Please remember to set your clocks back on Saturday, November 4.

DINNER & DOCTRINE SPEAKER SERIES LOVE & LIMITS: A Theology of Hope and Dying

November is the traditional month to cherish the memory of our dead. It urges us to commune in prayer, with the souls of those we loved while they walked this Earth. We are continually reminded that “life is changed, not ended.” It is our belief that at the moment of death, we will

experience our ultimate encounter with the God of Love. In this encounter we will experience God more vividly than ever before because our spirit will be free of all human constraints. Please join us on Tuesday, November 14, at The Overlook, 1519 Overlook Rd, Kent, OH 44240 where Dr. Natalie Kertes Weaver, Ph.D. will address this tradition of our faith as she presents LOVE & LIMITS: A Theology of Hope and Dying. Dr. Weaver is a Professor of Religious Studies and Co-Director of the Theology and Pastoral Studies graduate program at Ursuline College. In addition Dr. Weaver is an author, speaker, and blogger with areas of interest and expertise including: feminist theology; theology of suffering; theology of the family; religion and violence; and (inter)sex and theology. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. and the presentation is at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25.00 per person and can be purchased at any Portage County Parish by Monday, November 6. One hour of General Religious Education Credit will be offered. For more information, please contact [email protected].
