OUR PARISH CEMETERY Clean-up Session was

rained out last Saturday. We still invite all St. Gabriel parishioners to get acquainted with our parish cemetery, named St. Margaret’s Cemetery. Perhaps you’d like to come to our outdoor Memorial Day Mass at St. Margaret’s Cemetery this Monday, May 27 at 9:00am. Or whenever you happen to stop by to see the cemetery, please feel free to pick up any

litter that blew in, or tidy up any other way you see fit. St. Margaret’s Cemetery is something we should all take responsibility for.

Dear Parishioners, This weekend, we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the revelation that God is Triune: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I remember in seminary, my professor began the class on the Trinity with a challenge: “Who cares that God is Triune? How is believing in a Triune God different than what other, non-Christian monotheistic religions believe, like the Jews or the Muslims? They believe that there is one God and so do we. Why does it matter that we believe He is Triune? Is it just a bit of trivial knowledge, or does it really make a difference in our faith and in our lives?” This is an important question, because the Christian belief in a Triune God is at the core of our faith, and it separates us from our non-Christian brothers and sisters. In past centuries, when our discourse was less civil, it was the cause of accusations of being polytheistic - worshipping more than one God, because we said that God is one but God is also three. That sounded like the pagans, worshipping multiple gods. If it doesn’t really make a difference that God is Triune, than why not just drop it in order to get along better with our neighbors? It does make a difference, first of all and at the most basic level, because it is true. Why does that matter? It matters because the more we know the truth about another, the more we are able to love them. Christ came to tell us the truth about the Father and what he told us is that he and the Father are one, together with the Holy Spirit, one God in three persons. This is a revelation that we could not come to know by ourselves; we needed God to come tell us, which is exactly what He did. This is hard to understand. Christ has revealed to us that he, the Father and the Spirit are one, but this truth is still inaccessible to our human reason, which is what you would expect. After all, we are talking about the nature of God, our Creator. We shouldn’t expect to be able to fully grasp who He is. That may be why we are sometimes hesitant to speak about God as Triune because we have a hard time articulating exactly what that means. We don’t want to say something about God that isn’t true. But while we do know that God is Triune, it is a mystery, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It is something we know and believe simply because Christ has revealed it, because He is trustworthy, and because it makes sense. And the fact that God is Triune tells us something else about Him: God is a relational being, a personal being, not a solitary, impersonal one. That has an enormous influence on us, especially in the way we pray. He is not “The Force,” that exists but doesn’t care. He is not the wind blowing through the trees or the babbling brook. That is not God. God is a living, tri-personal being, one who loves us and desires to be in a relationship with us. That is why Christ tells us to call out to Him as our Father, for we are His sons and daughters. If God is personal and desires to be in relationship with others, that tells us something about ourselves, too. We are created in His image, and so we are also relational. We cannot be solitary. Just as He did not stay within Himself and watch from a distance as the human race stumbled and fell, neither should we. There is no one on the face of this earth of whom we can say, “I don’t care what happens to you. Take care of yourself, you are not my problem.” That is not the image of the Triune God. We are called to empty ourselves for the sake of others, all others, to invest our lives in each other and to make it our goal to bring each other into communion with God. God loved us so much that He became one of us in order to reveal Himself to us. Let us take comfort in this truth of our faith and give Him praise, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. - Fr. Liekhus

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
