However, if the Longhirst Leader is to continue in its present form we still need to establish permanent funding.

In order to keep costs to a minimum we have decided that in future we will not regularly include any puzzles. Mike Elphick has produced all the crosswords, word searches etc. for several years and we would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all the time and effort he has put in.

We would like new people on the Editorial Group to introduce some fresh ideas. If you are interested or have any comments or suggestions concerning the financing or the contents of the Leader please do not hesitate to contact any member of the Editorial Group as listed on the last page. PARISH COUNCIL REPORT

At the AGM for Longhirst Parish Council held on 8th May Bob Jackson was elected Chairman for the coming year with Catherine Farrell being elected as Vice Chairman. The Clerk, Ian Thompson, read out a summary of the past year’s events and issues. Then the accounts for last year along with the probable budget for the coming year were explained and discussed.

A new list of meeting dates for the coming year was issued. Some dates have been changed to ensure that our County Cllr, Alan Sambrook, can attend the PC meetings (see below).

The closure of the C125 was then debated at length by the PC and the considerable number of residents who attended. Present from UK Coal were their Regional Manager, Mr P. Woods and their Site Manager, Mr P. Miller. NCC was represented by Cllr. A. Sambrook and Mr J. Nugent from the Planning Dept.Although there was a lot of debate the reality is that the road is closed and looks as if it will remain closed for the time it takes to extract the coal from the west side of the road. The PC stated that we had been told that any road closure would only come about through a planning application, which would have allowed consultation to take place. The road was closed arbitrarily by NCC Highways Dept. on health and safety grounds without any consultation, which they can do legally! The PC pointed out that this road closure not only grossly inconvenienced many Longhirst residents but it also had considerable financial implications for residents and businesses. When asked who would re-imburse any financial losses neither UK Coal nor NCC replied.Cllr. Sambrook and Mr Nugent are looking at the issue again, but it is highly unlikely the road will reopen.

NCC Highways Dept. have informed us that work on potholes will soon be done on the C125 and on the Longhirst Station to Linton road.

The fact that the resurfaced road at the entrance to Longhirst Colliery is holding standing water due to the poor quality of the original work was again emphatically pointed out to Cllr. Sambrook.

A small working party has been set up to consider the Clerk's salary as he has not had an increase in the last 8 years and there are also new national scales to consider.

The two flower tubs at the War Memorial are to be replaced by the PC and three new ones bought for the opposite corner of the junction.

An application for a grant of £250 was approved to allow the Longhirst Parish Association to buy new tables for the Village Hall.

The cost of extending the footpath at the north end of the Village (west side) has been approved and this will be done as soon as possible.

We were informed that there is now a definitive map of footpaths and bridle paths on the NCC website.

The date of the next meeting is 10th July at 7 pm in the Village Hall. Future meetings will be on 11th September, 13th November, 15th January, 12th March and 14th May. Bob Jackson

VILLAGE HALL NEWS .

The redecoration of the Foyer, the Reading Room, the Small Meeting Room and the Kitchen was completed during the week commencing the 2nd May and the Reading Room was re-carpeted on the 8th May. Our thanks are due to UK Coal and to an anonymous benefactor for making this possible.

Our thanks are also due to Colin Bentham who has repaired the damaged door handle between the Sports Hall and the Store Room and installed the solar powered light which comes on automatically when it sees a warm body near the front door – a great help for those of us who scrabble about with keys on dark nights.

Many of you will be particularly pleased to hear that we have purchased six large and six small folding tables which are less than half the weight of the tables we have been using in recent years. This has been made possible by grants from UK Coal, the Parish Council and the Longhirst Garden Association. Our thanks are due to all three benefactors.

To celebrate their Twenty-first Birthday the Woodhorn Matters are mounting an exciting Exhibition in the Bagpipe Museum (lift available) at the Chantry in Morpeth this June. VICAR’S LETTER .

You may have read about the difficulties with the heating at St. John’s Church in the last edition of the Longhirst Leader and how repairing and renewing the oil fired system would inevitably mean damaging the tiled floor, huge expense and

the continued vulnerability of the oil supply to theft . Having consulted a number of heating experts over the past few weeks we are now seriously exploring the possibilities of electrical forms of heating, both in terms of overhead heating and also night storage. We will be consulting with one or two of our neighbouring churches which already use these systems. Having resumed morning worship at St. John’s at Easter we have been using a number of electrical fan heaters running throughout the previous night to take the chill off before Sunday morning services and these have been very effective now that the weather is warming up. The purchase of a dehumidifier has also noticeably reduced the damp. Thanks to all those who have expressed concern and have offered suggestions as to the best way forward.

As you will know this year marks the commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War. We intend to mark this on Sunday 3rd August in our morning service at Longhirst at 9.30am culminating with an observance at the War Memorial afterwards at 11am. In the afternoon at Bothal Church there will be a Commemoration Service at 3pm which will be part of a series of commemorative events planned to take place in Pegswood over that weekend. John Park
