More attractions... more entertainment!With just a few weeks to go until this year’s Fete and Carnival the committee are confident that there’s even more entertainment planned for 2014 than ever before.

We hope that by producing this free programme and distributing it with the assistance of the Parish Council you’ll put the date in your diary and join us for this annual community event on Surrenden Playing Field.

Top of the bill is Shannen Turner, a truly polished performer backed by her band, The Electric Fingers, on stage throughout the afternoon. Uncle Myles returns with Punch & Judy and his own brand of magic and watch out for Charlie the Clown being silly all over the place. We’ve introduced a children’s activity marquee this year so the little ones can make and play with a variety of crafts. And there’s a dog show, arena displays, bonny baby and the list goes on…

The Fete is also an opportunity for village groups and organisations to showcase themselves, to recruit members and to raise funds. We think there’s something of interest for everyone and so we look forward to seeing you from noon on Saturday 28th June and as always if you enjoy the day and feel you would like to join our very small band of volunteers (we also do the French market and Santa around the village) please speak to one of the committee on the day.

Programme - Saturday 28th June 2014

Ken CollinsKen moved from Marden to Staplehurst in 1971 and immediately became involved with village clubs and societies. On his retirement from work he volunteered to drive for The Weald Club for the Disabled and Leonard Cheshire Disability both based in Staplehurst, and continued to drive for both organisations for over 12 years. Ken was transport co-ordinator for the Weald Club for the Disabled, organising many outings for members and was instrumental in raising funds for a new custom built vehicle. He soon realised that funds were needed for both organisations and, as he had been attending local adult education art classes, the idea of drawing and producing a Staplehurst Calendar to raise funds for them and for other village groups came into being.

The 2014 Calendar was the tenth edition, bringing the total raised over the 10 years to £14,457 for Staplehurst Clubs and Societies. Ken also helped organise an Annual Art Show at the United Reformed Church for several years and the Creative Art Exhibition in 2012 for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Staplehurst. Ken has said he is only one of the many people in Staplehurst who volunteer in so many ways to make our village such a caring community. We are delighted to recognise Ken’s contribution to Staplehurst where he is involved in so many aspects of village life.

The club was founded in 1983 and runs classes for puppies and dogs of all ages. There is obedience incorporating The Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme, competitive obedience, rally, heelwork to music and agility. The D.I.T.T.O. Diamonds team was formed in 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s

Craft TentChildren’s Craft Activities come and enjoy a free craft activity. Pop in to the Messy Church tent where, thanks to the Carnival Committee, children can make one craft activity there, to then take home with them. There will be a selection of crafts to choose from, catering for different age abilities (aimed at Primary School ages, but with something too for younger ones). Come and join in the messy fun! Messy Church offers a welcome to everyone and meets at Staplehurst United Reformed Church (opposite the post office). On the first Saturday of each month (except August) the Team organise a Messy Church event with 6 or 7 different craft activities, a short Service, followed by a tea together. Why not come along and join in with us and get messy too!.

Charlie the Clown is at the village fun day today. He will amaze you with his Magic, read your mind and tell you one of his awful jokes (very corny). If you are lucky you might meet Charlie’s pet mouse or even say hello to his friend “ Mickey the Monkey”. You cannot miss Charlie with his Trolley of Tricks and his colourful outfit.

Shannen is from Strood in Kent and comes from a large musical family. Spotted by her now musical director singing at the Dickens’ World attraction in Chatham, she soon graduated to performing in the adjacent Britannia Theatre in a successful musical revue ‘Time for Tea’, capturing the audiences hearts with her rendition of Wouldn’t it be Luvverly! Subsequently starring in regular cabaret spots. A country singer at heart, Shannen has gone on to perform regularly at shows and festivals and is delighted to bring her talents to Staplehurst with her band The Electric Fingers, fresh from her recent auditions for ‘The Voice’ and X Factor with close friend Jamie Johnson making the final! This summer Shannen will be warming

Where is it?Well, travel around 3858 miles west, do another 704 mile hop southwards to the Great Plains of America and you’ll be there in Staplehurst, Nebraska. The maps don’t show it, but whilst it’s relatively flat it’s actually 1500ft above sea level.

How did it get its name?In the mid 1800s the population of Staplehurst, Kent, was about 1600. William Jull was Deacon of what is now the United Reformed Church, and in addition ran a general store and warehouse opposite the church (in what is known as the Milestone Buildings). The youngest of his 8 children was called Ebenezer, and he became a railway engineer. The middle to late 1800s was a time which was hard for our area. Ebenezer, his wife and children, had been moving around, probably because he needed to live close to the site where the railway was being constructed. They appeared in different locations in the 1851, 1861, and 1871 censuses. It must have been soon after the 1871 census they made the momentous decision to emigrate to the USA with their

8 children, almost certainly never expecting to come back. Once they landed, on the east coast they continued travelling west around a further 1200 miles , finally settling in a place called Lincoln Creek. This was their homestead and was about a mile and a half from the nearest settlement, which comprised at that time of just a few houses - it was called ‘Lone Tree’, because of a large tree to its north west. That was in 1873 and 3 years later a mail route was established which passed through Lincoln Creek. The Julls, who had no doubt inherited some of their father’s entrepreneurial spirit, took the opportunity to set up a Post Office on their land. Ebenezer’s eldest daughter, Marianna (known as May), became postmistress (by this time she was 19 and married to another English immigrant, Burrell Mathews). She named the Post Office STAPLEHURST, after her father’s roots. In addition to the Post Office, the Julls had built a mill on their land, but in 1880 a disaster occurred, with the mill being completely destroyed by fire.

Following this the family decided to move the post office to Lone Tree, and, at the same time, the ‘Lone Tree’ name was changed to Staplehurst. That same year the first map of the new Staplehurst was made, and 4 years later on August 22 1884, Staplehurst, Nebraska was incorporated as a village. Incidentally May later moved to Colorado and finally died in 1955, aged 97, in New Jersey.

What’s it like now?With a population currently around 280, it’s a relatively small village, but an active one. It has a volunteer fire department, a community centre, small Lutheran school, (linked to the Lutheran church) and a local pub. It also has a post office, despite the US Postal Service recently trying to close it – but the local community joined forces, protested, and won – it’s been kept! Although named by an English family, the ancestry of the current residents is mainly German (45%), with those being

able to trace back to English roots just 8% – and you won’t find any Julls living there now. Weatherwise, it’s cold in winter, with average temperatures below freezing from mid December to the end of February, and is normally accompanied by around 6 inches (150mm) of snow through this winter period. Summer is warm, but it’s also the time when there’s more rain. It gets windy at times too. As we write this in mid May, the area has sadly suffered from a massive storm, (which included 4 tornadoes to the south and east of Staplehurst). It was one of the worst, if not the worst in the last 30 years.

A friend of our contact there, a teacher, had so much damage her house is currently uninhabitable. They must live in a rental for four months while their house is being repaired AND the day after the storm she had a baby - their third child. Throughout Nebraska around $20m worth of damage has been caused. Looking at the wider area, Staplehurst is about 8 miles from the much larger town of Seward (pop.c 7000) and this is the main commercial centre, and indeed many of the local Staplehurst children attend school there. 27 or so further miles away is Nebraska’s state capital Lincoln, and with a population of around 250,000, is the major cultural centre. If you want to visit the American Staplehurst the nearest airport is here – it takes just 12 hours from Heathrow.


Staplehurst Play Scheme28th July to 5th August 2014Play Place will be running the village’s Playscheme again this year. The scheme will provide up to 60 places each weekday morning for rising 5s (those starting school September 2014 provided they have reached 4 years old) to 11 years. The venue will again be the Kathie Lamb Brownie & Guide Centre, at the Jubilee Field. Sessions start at 9.30 and run through until 12.30pm.

So what do the children do? Well it’s largely up to them, as they can choose from a large selection of resources and equipment that are appropriate to their age group. The sessions promote ‘free play’, and there’s a programme of topic based activities, so they are fully occupied, and have a fun time – after all that’s what holidays are for!

Although the scheme is strongly supported by both the Parish Council and Maidstone Borough Council, there is a small charge for each session. There are more details atwww.staplehurstvillage.org.uk and more will be published nearer the time.

Letters From the Front To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War, The Drama Group are putting on a short (around an hour) play, in the Parish Church. Written by Julie Austin, it’s a story of an elderly lady’s reminiscences of life and enduring love, punctuated by letters from her husband. It’s on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July, starting at 7.30. Look out for ticket details.

Staplehurst 10k Run

The race returns on June 15th for a sixth year with new sponsors in ACORN HIRE. Since it started, it has grown to become one of the most popular 10ks in Kent, with a regular 300 plus finishers. It is recognised as one of the county’s fastest courses, with genuine personal best potential for the more serious runners, whilst at the same time, its rural, virtually flat course is an easy and gentle introduction for first timers. For the first time this year we are

having a children’s race, and all children will be given a race number and after completing the short course receive a medal

(children can be entered on the day, at the race HQ in the village centre).

The children’s race will start at 9.30am, and will be 2 laps of

Surrenden playing field.

The main event starts at 10.00am, also from Surrenden Road field.

Spectators and supporters will be able to see the runners as they leave the village along the Marden Road, turning left into Pagehurst Rd and then continuing on a circular route around Five Oak Lane, passing the former ’Wild Duck’ pub, and the ‘Eco- House’ on their return. Invicta Jazz Orchestra – Saturday 20th September at the Parish ChurchAlthough we can’t deliver a concert on the evening of the Carnival and Fete, we’ve been able to team up with the good folk from the Parish Church, to arrange a great

evening of entertainment with the Invicta Jazz Orchestra. IJO consists of 30 talented amateur musicians playing an eclectic mix of jazz styles

from “Summertime” to “Sesame Street” from “Thriller” to “Mack the Knife”. IJO plays regularly in music festivals in Maidstone, Tonbridge, Ashford, Cranbrook and Faversham plus many other gigs usually raising money for charity. Have a look at their
