SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY, PRIEST: Saint John Mary Vianney was born on May 8, 1786 at Dardilly, Lyons, France. John wanted to become a priest. After overcoming many difficulties, he was ordained a priest on August 3, 1915. Three years later, he was made parish priest and Pastor of the Parish at Ars (Cure D’Ars). John encountered people who were indifferent and quite confortable with their style of living. His vision of converting them led him through severe fasts and short nights of sleep. (Some devils can only be cast out by prayer and fasting.)
His work as a confessor is Saint John Mary Vianney’s most remarkable accomplishment. In winter months, he would spend eleven to twelve hours daily reconciling people with God. In the summer months this time was increased to six-teen hours a day. Unless a man was dedicated to his vision of a priestly vocation, he could not have endured this giving of self, day after day. Accustomed to the most severe austerities, beleaguered by swarms of penitents, and besieged by the devil, this great mystic manifested imperturbable patience. He was a wonder worker loved by the crowds, but he retained a childlike simplicity, and he remains to this day, the living image of the priest after the Heart of Christ. It is reported that even the staunchest of sinners were converted by his mere word. He died August 4, 1859, and was canon-ized May 31, 1925. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI named him the patron of all priests worldwide.
Father John Marie Vianney had short, touching homilies. I found one in the Breviary on the feast day of Saint John Vi-anney on August 3rd. Volume VI page 1269 -1270.
From the catechetical instructions by Saint John Mary Vianney, Priest:
“My little children, reflect on these words: the Christian's treasure is not on earth but in heaven. Our thoughts, then, ought to be directed to where our treasure is. This is the glorious duty of man: to pray and to love. If you pray and love, that is where a man’s happiness lies. Prayer is nothing else but union with God. When one has a heart that is pure and united with God, he is giv-en a kind or serenity and sweetness that makes him ecstatic, a light surrounds him with marvelous bright-ness. In this intimate union, God and the soul are fused together like two bits of wax that no one can ever pull apart. This union of God with a tiny creature is a lovely thing. It is happiness beyond understanding. We hasd become unworthy to pray, but God in his goodness allowed us to speak with him. Our prayer is incense that gives him the greatest pleasure. My little children, your hearts are small but prayer stretches them and makes them capable of loving God. Through prayer, we receive a foretaste of heaven and something of paradise comes down upon us. Prayer never leaves us without sweetness. It is honey that flows onto the soul and makes all things sweet. When we pray properly, sorrows disappear like snow before the sun. Prayer also makes time pass very quickly and with such great delight that one does not notice its length. Listen: Once when I was a purveyor in Bresse and most of my companions were ill, I had to make a long journey. I prayed to the good God, and believe me the time did not seem long. Some men immerse themselves as deeply in prayer as fish in water, because they give themselves totally to God. There is no division in their hearts. O. how I love these noble souls! Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Colette used to see our Lord and talk to him just as we talk to one another. How unlike them we are! How often we come to church with no idea of what to do or what to ask for. And yet, whenever we go to any human being, we know well enough why we go. And still worse, there are some who seem to speak to the good God like this: “I will only say a couple of things to you, and then I will be rid of you.” I often think that when we come to adore the Lord, we would receive everything we ask for, if we would ask with living faith and with a pure heart.”
Ministers walking on water! There is the story about three clergymen: a Jewish Rabbi, a Protestant minister and a Catholic priest. They were fishing together. They rowed to the mid-dle of a small lake and cast their lines. Soon they ran out of bait. The rabbi volunteered to go for more. Calmly he stepped off the boat and walked across the water to the shore. When he returned in the same manner, it was discovered that the trio’s canteens were empty. Immedi-ately the minister collected them and, like the rabbi, walked across the water to the shore and filled them up and returned. Later, when the men grew hungry, they realized they had forgotten a lunch basket, whereupon the priest quickly rose, stepped off the boat and immedi-ately plunged to the bottom of the lake. When he had surfaced, he heard the rabbi say to the minister, “I suppose we really should have told him where the stones are.”

Reading 1 - 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11–13a At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crush-ing rocks before the LORD—but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake—but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire—but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whisper-ing sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
Responsorial Psalm - Ps 85:9, 10, 11–12, 13–14 R. (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your sal-vation. I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD--for He proclaims peace. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwell-ing in our land. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salva-tion. Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salva-tion. The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps. R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salva-tion.
Reading 2 - Rom 9:1–5 Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patri-archs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Gospel - Mt 14:22–33 After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terri-fied. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immedi-ately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Fr. Bernardin’s Homily (August 9, 2020)
Diocese Requested Second Collection
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time (August 9, 2020):
The violence of nature plays a role in all three readings today. Human life is a remarkable
mixture of that famous “smile and tear”. We all have our ups and downs in life. We attend
both weddings and funerals. Parents witness graduations and often the failures of their chil-
dren as well. Married life can be like the smell of roses and turn into a nightmare. Young
people are successful today and can be turned upside down tomorrow.
Friends may disappoint, and we may witness infidelity not only in our government but even
in our Church. All this may leave us confused and downcast. What are we to do?
Whenever we have that sinking feeling that Peter had, we need to cry out as he did: “Lord,
save me!” Whenever we feel that living our life of faith seems as though we are walking on
water, we need to cry out as Peter did: “Lord, save me!”
Whenever we think that responsibilities and demands of our work are weighing us down and
we realize we are slipping into the abyss of busy-ness, we need to cry out as Peter did:
“Lord, save me!”. When worries, anxieties and panic make us feel as though we were
drowning, we need to cry out as Peter did: “Lord, save me!”
How did Jesus respond to this cry for help? Immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand and
caught Peter. Jesus is not only there. He is right there! He didn’t wait for Peter to gulp a
gallon of lake water before He grabbed him. But He did wait until Peter called for help.
Like Peter, we have to call for help, ask for help, and seek help. The hand that is stretched
out to catch us will be Jesus’ and disguised as the hand of a parent or sibling, the hand of a
counselor, the hand of a friend, a co-worker, a spiritual director.
FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND
One night a man had a dream- he dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord; across
the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;
one belonging to him and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene had flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints and noticed that many
times along the path there was only one set of footprints in the sand. He also noticed that this hap-
pened during the lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned
the Lord.
“Lord, You said that once I decided to follow You, You would walk all the way; but I noticed that dur-
ing the most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints! I don’t understand
why, when I needed you most--You deserted me!” The Lord replied, “My precious child, I love you
and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of
footprints—it was then that I carried you.” Unknown Author
This weekend, there is a second collection for the Church in Latin America. Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean do not have access to church programs and ministries because of a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers. Your generosity makes it possible for our brothers and sisters in Latin Amer-ica and the Caribbean to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. Please be as generous as possi-ble. Mass Intentions
Gracious and loving God, we come before you as believers who must see our faith manifested in ser-vice to others. Kindly hear our petitions and teach us to act as your Son always did by serving others. We address these petitions to the Father through the Son:
For the Church: that we may recognize God's presence in both the extraordinary and ordinary events of our lives so that we may coop-erate with God more fully .
Lord, hear our prayer
For greater civility in public discourses: that all political leaders may show respect for their opponents, express their ideas and con-cerns thoughtfully, and work to promote the common good of society Lord, hear our prayer For families facing crisis: that they may hear Christ’s invitation to step forward in faith and find healing and renewal as they take the hand of Christ
Lord, hear our prayer
For the strengthening of marriage and family life, and for all those preparing for marriage, that the Lord will fill them with virtue and a love that endures all things
Lord, hear our prayer
For all who are ill: that God will relieve their suffering, bring healing to the sick, and sustain them as they work to recover their strength
Lord, hear our prayer
For all who have died, for our loved ones who have died, that God will welcome them into the fullness of His vision that we begin to know through the Eucharist
Lord, hear our prayer
For these intentions, the intentions shared by the community throughout the week that we bring to the altar, and all those intentions written in the silence of our hearts. Lord, hear our prayer
Gracious and loving God, we find it difficult at times to link our faith in you with the problems of our sisters and brothers. Kindly enable us to understand that faith in you must indeed include your ex-tended family. Teach us to realize that faith and community service go hand in hand. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

CALENDAR:
We will soon be in touch with you regarding plans for the reception of sacraments: First Reconciliation, First Holy-Communion & Confirma-tion. We also hope to have some plans for the return to clas-ses for all…
Personal Note: By now, I’m sure that most of you know that I’ve retired as Director/Coordinator of Reli-gious-Education at SJE Parish. Who will take my place? Ask Fr. Bernardin about that! However, I will be volun-teering & be around to see the children through on re-ceiving their sacraments. I’ve been asked if I’m returning to Ireland permanently… The answer to that question is: There are many branches of Sisters of Mercy. For exam-ple: Sisters of Mercy of Ireland (who opened & operated SJE School for many years.) Sisters of Mercy of England, Sisters of Mercy of South-Africa, Sisters of Mercy of Aus-tralia and Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Even though I was born & raised in Ireland – I belong to the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas (who had a recruiting house in my home parish in Ireland.) So, the shortest answer is: No, I will not be returning to Ireland permanently. Again, thanks to each and all of you for the many bless-ings which I experienced during my ministry years here at SJE.
In Memoriam
–bating the greatness of their orders. Suddenly, an apparition of the Holy Family appeared in front of them, with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such poverty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beautiful re-flection of the Trinity and the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, send him to school?
