A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKHappy last days of Advent! Most of the fun, excitement of any journey is getting there. We are in the final hours of preparing for Christmas and without a doubt there are still chores that need to be accomplished. Don’t fret because we can only do what is possible and the real focus now is the timely arrival of the Lord. The Gospel for this final Sunday of Advent, is the scene from the Visitation. This meeting of two expectant mothers has a deep significance; the Old Testament pointing to the New Testament. Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah, a priest of high regard in the Temple of Jerusalem. She, pregnant at an older age, represents the best of the ancient chosen people of God. Her body contained the one who would point out the Lord to the world. John the Baptist, unborn within the womb of Elizabeth, leapt for joy in the presence of Jesus
within Mary. John, the last of the ancient Israelite prophets became the first of the Christian prophets pointing to the one he would later call the “Lamb of God”. Mary, the expectant young girl, was bursting with joy at this encounter. Mary enjoyed a unique possession of the Word of God within her. Mary proclaimed the Magnificat to Elizabeth, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” And we have been saved because Mary trusted in God. We understand the importance of Elizabeth’s words to Mary, “Blessed is she who trusted that the Lord’s word to her will be fulfilled.” With the imminent arrival of the Messiah, prophecy is being fulfilled and finally a desperate world is being saved. When you think of it…nothing else is that urgent. The Prince of Peace is approaching. As we celebrate this holy season, we are faced with yet another opportunity to pause in the midst of all the excitement, decorations, and commercialization, to consider again the origin of Christmas--the One whose birth we celebrate. Let's not forget the true meaning of why we celebrate during this time of year. Celebrate the arrival of Jesus and trust Him as Savior today. Have a Blessed Christmas!
You and your loved ones will be remembered in our Christmas Masses...

INSPIRE 16 December 2018
The Fourth Sunday of Advent Vocations: In today’s first reading, the Lord promises to send One “who will shepherd his flock.” God has kept that promise throughout the centuries and continues to call shepherds for His people. Is He calling you to serve as a shepherd – to minister to His people as a priest? Call or write Fr. Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113; [email protected]). And check out our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!
General Intercessions: For our young people, that when the Lord calls, they respond in the spirit of our Lady, who said “let it be done to me according to Your will,” we pray to the Lord!
Marriage Moments: It's almost here. Perhaps your tradition is to decorate the tree or open presents on Christmas Eve. Keep the focus on your love for each other, not on whether everything will go right. Sometimes the best Christmas stories are about fiascos. By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

25 December 2018 The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord
Vocations: Through Isaiah’s prophecy, God says “How beautiful are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation.” In every age God calls men and women to do this work through the prophetic living out of priesthood and religious life. Maybe God is calling you. If you think that might be the case, call or write Fr. Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113; [email protected]). And check out our website: www.cdow.org/vocations! General Intercessions: That, as we celebrate the birth of the Savior, many of our people hear His call to proclaim glad tidings, announce peace, and bear good news as priests, sisters or brothers, we pray to the Lord!
Parenting Pointers: December 30 is the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Often this feast gets lost amidst the hustle of Christmas. Take 5 minutes today to share with your family at least one thing that makes your family holy. Hint: It need not be about saying prayers; it could be examples of selflessness. By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net
Tuesday, December 25, 2018 The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord
Merry Christmas! Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord. The gift of Jesus Christ to humanity is the result of God's unconditional and merciful love for us. Jesus lived and died trying to show human beings how to live by rejecting godless ways and worldly desires and by living temperately, justly, and devoutly. We are also asked to live in joyful hope of Christ's return again, anticipating the fulfillment of all things in Christ. How well have we learned the lessons Jesus taught? Instead of moving closer to realizing God's vision for us, it appears that our world is moving further away. We are easily distracted, disorientated, and preoccupied with things that leave us feeling empty. There is a God-shaped hole in each one of us that can only be filled by Him. Realizing this truth about who we are is the only thing that can bring real happiness. This year, are we going to just "celebrate" God's gift of his Son or really "accept" him?

Our hearts lift at the candles of midnight Mass on Christmas. The Eucharist - that simple little host
resting in the stable of our hearts - has new meaning. Our joy lifts at the sight of long-unseen
family. The wonder of the season is here. Glory to God indeed!
