Our History
Establishing the Mission in RoseburgThe mission of St. Stephen the Martyr was established in the Umpqua Valley in 1853, and thename of the parish was changed to its present nameof St. Joseph in 1881. The parish began as a smallchurch in downtown Roseburg. It outgrew thatlocation and the current location was purchased. Theschool was built first and the gym used for churchservices until funds could be raised for a new church. The first Sunday Mass was held in the gym in 1955.Seattle sculptor Richard Bryer hand-carved approximately 1,500 bricks to form the Stations ofthe Cross. Church construction began on May 1, 1966,the Feast day of St. Joseph the Worker.
ArchitectureSt. Joseph Parish was created as a place of worshipfor 800 people, functionally and spiritually, in accord with the 1960s ecumenical pronouncements, while retaining as much of the traditional aspects of the Church as possible.
The Church forms an awesome silhouette against thesurrounding natural landscape. The altar occupies itstraditional central position in the sanctuary, floodedwith light from the box-shaped skylight at the pinnacle of the tower, as well as from vertical stripsof glass on four sides of the rising tower walls. Thedramatic stained glass windows send jeweled patterns of light across the brick floors and walls, creating an effect similar to that found in medievalGothic cathedrals. The rotunda is built with glue-laminated timbers and wood decking. The walls andceiling of the nave are paneled with natural finishhemlock boards. The interior conveys a sense of bothwarmth and tranquility through the integration ofsculpture, ceramics and stained glass into the architectural setting.
