Dear Parishioners of St. John, This weekend we celebrate the second Sunday in ordinary time. The gospel we hear becomes one of the first miracles that Jesus performed. The wedding in Cana was an opportunity for Jesus to manifest His power and also tells us of the great care that He has for us. As we live our lives, Jesus continues to be present to us. Let us remember that He is present in our lives and that we are called to be disciples of Christ and to bring Jesus to others through words and actions. This week we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. day. Let his example and courage inspire us and future generations to build up a society on the foun-

dation of love, equality and justice. From the Archdiocese: “According to Archdiocesan policies lay leadership and parishioners are to be given the opportunity to recognize Fr. Karol Tybor’s gifts and to share their sentiments about his ministry. Thus, we are providing a parish-wide survey as part of his review process. The survey can be found in this bulletin, just simply fill it out, tear the page out and mail it to the address provided on the bottom of the second page. The survey can also be easily accessed by going to the Archdio-cese's web page (https://www.archchicago.org/) and clicking on “Offices and Ministries,” located on the top panel. This will bring you to an alphabetical listing of offices. Under “M”, select Ministerial Evaluation. You will then be directed to the “priests.” Please click on the word “Link” next to your appropriate language to access the survey. The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Polish.” We are looking for more Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Altar Servers. Training can be completed in one session. If you would like to make a New Year’s resolution and join one of the ministries, please contact our parish office to schedule your training.

I would like to inform you that our new printing company is Overt Press, Inc. You should be getting your February/March envelopes soon. We are in the process of updating our parishioner data base. I recently have been communicating with parishioners via email. If you would like to receive communication from our office electronically, please provide us with your email. Please return the bottom of this page by mail or simply drop in the collection basket. Let us continue to keep each other in prayers, Fr. Karol ************************************************************************************ Please mark off what applies: ____ My information as it appears on the envelopes is correct ____ I use Give Central/no need for envelopes ____ I moved out of the parish; please remove me from the mailing list ____ My current email address is _________________________________________________ ____ The best phone number to reach me is __________________________________________ Any comments/correction______________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ My Name:_________________________ Home Address:____________________________________

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE January 20, 2019 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time When you think of being Catholic, what do you think of? Perhaps you grew up with your only associations being fasting, nuns with rulers, and "Catholic guilt." Our faith can sometimes have the connotation of re-striction and absence, not abundance. Who is God in your life? Is He the divine law-giver, the judge punishing the rule-breakers? These are certainly attributes of God. But the laws don't exist for them-selves alone. They exist to help us love one another as God loves us. And this loving God is the author of abundance and joy. Did you hear today's Gospel? "There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee." Here at this wedding, Jesus would perform "the beginning of his signs...and so reveal his glory." This first sign isn't a miraculous healing. He didn't raise someone from the dead. He kept a party going! "There were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons...the water...had become wine." The wine has run out. Jesus creates some-where between 120 and 180 gallons to help his friend save face. We may not have such momentous miracles in our lives, but God is watching out for us. The string of green lights when you're running late. The sale on the replacement appliance you need. The friend who calls at just the right time. These are the little moments of God's abundance. We just need to look for them! Not only does Jesus surprise, but the guests point out to their host: "You have kept the good wine until now." The divine wine is better than the earthly vari-ety. God's goodness is better than what we can grasp at for ourselves. Isn't that how it always goes?

Tax Credit Scholarship Program - Matching Great News! Happy New Year! Thank you for spreading the great news regarding the Tax Credit Scholarship program to friends and family members. The Academy is off to a phenomenal start as we enter year two of this program. The generosity of those – like yourself – who care about our mission and our children is making an amazing impact on families earning these scholarships. As you know, a very generous donor offered a 2-for-1 match for donations made to Empower IL, through 2/22/19. The match is capped at $100k per school – and donors need to specify that they want their funds to help our school specifically. If we can reach this goal, we will have $300k in committed scholarships for our families. Imagine that! Currently, donors have gifted the school with $34,800 which means we have $104,400 after the match. We are every excited about this enthusiastic beginning and hope that we can continue this momentum to reach the ul-timate goal of $100k in total scholarships before the match resulting in $300K for our students. We need you to help us with this important endeavor. Thank you for your consideration and care! Ms. Patricia Murphy Steps for Empower Illinois Donations for 2 for 1 Match https://schools.archchicago.org/donating-to-a-tax-credit-scholarship Please designate Academy of St. Benedict. The match only happens with Empower Illinois through 2/28/19. Thank you for always thinking of us and praying for us!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mis-sion. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new ex-pressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are col-laborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are de-lightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well-worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
