PRAYER FOR POPE FRANCIS

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, Pope Francis, a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. AMEN

take five minutes to feed your faith every day

Remove this page from the bulletin and put it where you’ll see it each day.

Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a

time.

SUNDAY, MAY 25, 2014 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Ask for directions The seven essential ingredients for a happy and holy life are available to you at all times. Simply call on the Holy Spirit—your divine Advocate—and in one breath you will receive: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and wonder and awe. Whenever you find yourself emotionally overwrought or on an uncertain course, remember not to act out of anger or fear. Look to God for help, and the peace of God’s Spirit will come.

TODAY’S READINGS: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17; 1 Peter 3:15-18; John 14:15-21 (55). “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.”

MONDAY, MAY 26 MEMORIAL OF PHILIP NERI, PRIEST

A smile is worth the effort Even in corrupt 16th-century Rome, Saint Philip retained a joyful spirit—a sure sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. “A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one,” he said. Do you ever catch yourself slipping into the character of a grouch? Careful research has shown that, counter to popular belief, it actually takes more muscles to smile than to frown, but isn’t it worth the effort to build up those smile muscles? Make Philip’s prayer your own: “Let me get through today, and I shall not fear tomorrow.”

TODAY’S READINGS: Acts 16:11-15; John 15:26-16:4a (291). “The Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father . . . will testify to me.”

TUESDAY, MAY 27 MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY, BISHOP, RELIGIOUS, MISSIONARY

Don’t give up Saint Augustine of Canterbury is called the “Apostle of England” for bringing Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. It wasn’t easy—they were a rough crowd, and they clung fiercely to their customs. Augustine experienced frustration, failure, and self-doubt, but he kept trying and at least partially succeeded in establishing the English church. Pope Gregory the Great wrote to him reassuringly: “He who would climb to a lofty height must go by steps, not leaps.” Even when it seems as if you’re not making headway, sometimes the only thing you can do is keep pushing forward.

TODAY’S READINGS: Acts 16:22-34; John 16:5-11 (292). “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved.”

WEDNESDAY, MAY 28 EASTER WEEKDAY

Are you searching in the dark? Faith requires you to open your eyes to the light. It demands conscious decisions day by day. Christianity has no set-it-and-forget-it mode. If you’re not exercising a vital, growing faith, your spirit is probably withering on the vine. Which is why unchurched seekers who eagerly grope for answers to life’s mysteries are sometimes more spiritually healthy than regular churchgoers who park in the pews and vegetate. Saint Paul was impressed by Athenians who worshipped the “unknown god.” Do you

sometimes fall into the trap of thinking you know God too well to seek further?

TODAY’S READINGS: Acts 17:15, 22-18:1; John 16:12-15 (293). “What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.”

THURSDAY, MAY 29 SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Rise to the occasion When Christ was raised from the dead, it wasn’t merely a matter of his soul going to heaven. He first appeared physically to his disciples. Then when he did ascend, he took his body with him. His return to the right hand of the Father made sense because Jesus was, after all, God. His body going with him, however, was just as necessary because God did not take on human form only to shed it as if it were a burden. That is the great calling the celebration of the Ascension reminds you of: to share in God’s life and rise to God.

TODAY’S READINGS: Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:17-23; Matthew 28:16-20 (58). “He presented himself alive to them.”

FRIDAY, MAY 30 EASTER WEEKDAY

Heal the breach On this date in 1868, only a few years after the U.S. Civil War ended, “Decoration Day,” which later became Memorial Day, was celebrated for the first time. The idea was to unite and heal a wounded nation while honoring those who had fallen on all sides. The date was selected in part because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle, in part because it was seen as the optimal date for flowers to be in bloom. Give a flower and heal a division in your own life today.

TODAY’S READINGS: Acts 18:9-18; John 16:20-23 (295). “You will grieve, but your grief will become joy.”

SATURDAY, MAY 31 FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

See God in people God often speaks through relationships with other people. A conversation with a friend can reveal a deeper truth. A simple smile from a stranger can tell of the wonderful love of God. Memories can call forth gratitude or alert you to the need for greater reflection. Truly it is in encountering others that the spirit of God stirs within. Just ask Mary as she encountered Elizabeth at the Visitation. Pay attention to the people in your life who make your soul jump. Cherish these moments and remember: The life of Christ is contained in everyone you meet.

TODAY’S READINGS: Zephaniah 3:14-18a or Romans 12:9-16; Luke 1:39-56 (572). “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
