If it doesn't, it is simply a diorama, a Christmas card picture of three wise men and a star, and it hasn't shocked us the way it should. Strange foreigners from a strange land with strange beliefs saw and responded to the light, while those who considered themselves religiously special and learned in the ways of God completely missed it – or saw it but didn't consider it important. It was outside the box of their expectations. Those who were deemed unclean and unworthy were the ones who saw the light, responded and were gifted with joy. The Epiphany should jostle us in our comfort zones and make us reflect on our set-in-stone expectations of how God will appear to us and what he will look like when he comes. The conclusion we need to come to is that we have no idea and that God may indeed first manifest his light to someone we think is outside the fold of acceptable religious beliefs. We live in a dark world, where it isn't always easy to discern the light, but it does us no good to cling to our black and white talismans against the night. Like the magi, we need to be able to recognize God's pinpoints of light in the dark universe and be willing to strike out across a wilderness terrain without all our theological comforts around us. We need to be fully aware that the light can be a star, a child, a dream, a long arduous journey, a dangerous proposition, a diligent search, an overwhelming joy, a compassionate decision or a flight back into the wilderness. It is rarely what we expect. Jean Allen

Epiphany Of The Lord

Light Expectations

The Epiphany should disturb us.

For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” (Matthew 2:1-2)Adults: What insights about your own faith have you gained from learning about other faith traditions?Children: What could you do to be like a star and lead someone to know about Jesus?
