DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL IIP KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The Baptiste G. Aubuchon House, 450 rue St. Jacques, Florissant, Missouri, is a rectan- ciular-plan, two-story, five-bay, six-room (not including halls, bath, and basement) residence in a typical, Missouri, Classically derived style. An enclosed one-story, two- room porch is attached to the rear (southeast) facade of the main (northwest) portion of the house.
EXTERIOR
Over-all dimensions
The main portion of the house measures approximately 40' by 20'; the enclosed porch is
9' x 40'.
Construction materials and colors
Basic construction materials are brick and stone: handmade soft red brick (laid in com mon bond) for the walls and stone for the foundations. The rear (southeast) porch is of
wood-frame construction. Brick and wood are used for the cornice and lintels and lug- sills respectively. Asphalt shingles cover the roofs.
Openings
Windows. Six-over-six light, double-hung sash windows occur one per bay on the northwest
and southeast facades of the main portion; there are no windows on the gable ends. Each
is trimmed by a wood lintel and lugsill. The four porch windows are also six-over-six light, double-hung sash; they, however, lack the lintel and lugsill trim.
Two basement windows are on the southwest facade of the main portion. Vousoirs (brick stretchers) ornament the segmental-arched openings.
Doorways. Two entrances provide access to the Aubuchon House. The main (northwest) entrance is centered in the middle (or third) bay of the primary (northwest) facade of the main portion on the first story. It is filled by a single-leaf, six-panel, wood door flanked by three-light sidelights and topped by a four-light transom. A lintel trims
the upper edge of the doorway opening. Protecting the entrance is a three-bay, one-story
porch. Four Doric columns support its hip roof; a pedimented gable ornaments the roof above the center bay. The porch rests on a cement base.
A second doorway, which provides access to the rear (southeast) porch, is also centered in the middle bay and filled by a single-leaf door. It is located on the southeast facade.
Roofs
Medium-pitched gable and shed roofs cover the main (northwest) portion and the rear porch respectively. Three lightning rods are evenly positioned along the center ridge of the gable roof.
Chimneys
Two, single-stack, brick chimneys service the Aubuchon House. Positioned one to each end
(northeast and southwest) facades of the main portion, they are flush with the wall sur face, straddling the roof ridge.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Baptiste G. Aubuchon House, 450 rue St. Jacques, Florissant, Missouri, is significant as an unusual example in its locale of a typical, Missouri, two-story, Classically derived- style, residential structure.! It is perhaps one of the earliest houses in Florissant, being constructed in ca. 1842. The house remains essentially unaltered.
The Aubuchon House is located on the southwest quarter of Block 35, once a part of the original Florissant Commons. These Commons were disposed of under the charter granted by the city of St. Ferdinand [Florissant] in 1857. The first recorded deed transfer to this property was to Baptiste G. Aubuchon in November, 1856. As these early dates appear contradictory, it should be noted that some plots were occupied previous to the Commons' dispersal.2
Chronology of ownership
A chronology of ownership includes:
1. ?2. Baptiste G. Aubuchon November, 18563. Maria Mottin (nee Aubuchon) February, 18694. Henry and Cora Goldbeck October 8, 19085. Hardesty Developments Inc. May, 19476. Mr. Rogers February, 19487. Mr. Davinroy May, 19488. Robert Hoorman 19599. Mr. and Mrs. David W. Baum July 7, 1971. 3
Only minimal historical data is available about the above owners. Baptiste G. [Gabriel]* Aubuchon, brother of Florissant's first mayor (Gregory Aubuchon),5 was married to Celeste Courtois on April 26, 1825. 6 Two children, Henry A. and Maria A., were born to them. Professionally, Aubuchon was a prominent early Florissant Valley farmer/landowner. 7 Henry Goldbeck was the son of prominent Florissant business people, Gerhardt and Mary Ann Goldbeck."
The survey of Missouri's historic sites is based on the selection of sites as they re late to theme studies in Missouri history as outlined in "Missouri's State Historic Preservation Plan." The Baptiste G. Aubuchon House is, therefore, being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places as an example of the theme of "Architecture."

Decorative features
Decorative details include lintels and lugsills {already mentioned) and cornices. Dentil- embellished cornices trim the northwest and southeast facades of the main portion; the end-facade projecting verges are plain.
INTERIOR
Basement
The half basement under the main (northwest) portion has stone walls and a poured con
crete floor.
First floor
The first floor is comprised of four rooms. A central hall separates the parlor and dining room of the northwest portion.
The rectangular-plan parlor and dining room are equal in dimension. Each has a fireplace centered along its lengthwise outer wall; original closets abut the fireplaces to the southeast. Finishing treatments include random-width, tongue-and-groove, pine flooring and plaster walls. The woodwork is primarily of pine; window sills are of oak.
Access to the second floor is by a straight-run, 16-step, "bridal" staircase (so named
because each step represents one year of the bride's age, usually 16). 1 The stairway is
positioned along the northeast wall of the hall, near the main entrance.
Second floor
The two bedrooms of the second floor open off a central hall; a non-original bath is at the northwest end of the hall. Each room has a fireplace and closet positioned like those of the parlor and dining room below. The finishing of this floor is similar to that of the first floor.
Attic
Access to the attic is through a closet in the bath. This space is unfinished.
ALTERATIONS
Alterations include:
1) the addition of an enlarged, one-story porch on the main
(northwest) facade (ca. turn-of-the-century)
2) the enclosure of the rear (southeast) porch with siding (date unknown)

CONDITION
The Aubuchon House is in good condition. The present owners are conducting an extensive restoration program.
SITE
The Aubuchon House, which faces northwest, is situated on the east corner of rue St." Jacques and Washington Street, one of the highest elevations in Florissant. A residen
tial neighborhood of more recently constructed homes surrounds the house.
The house occupies the northeastern half of a lot measuring 170' by 110'. Outbuildings include an original well house (no longer in use) and a shed (constructed on the site originally occupied by a summer kitchen). [The summer kitchen was known to have existed as late as 1878 as it appears on a survey map for that year.]3
PRESENT STATUS
There is no threat to the continued existence of the Aubuchon House; the home has sympathetic owners. Restoration of the first floor is complete; the second floor is to
be finished in 1976. 4
