July 9, 2012 Regarding Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago joining the suit to protest the HHS mandate
violating the constitutional protection of religious liberty The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago is a ministry that feeds the poor, protects the home‐less, counsels the troubled and houses the homeless. This ministry will lose its identity as Catholic unless the HHS mandate now in force as the recent law of the land is changed and the Catholic Church and other religious bodies are given back their constitutional freedom to minister publicly. This is the issue now be‐fore a court. It is also the issue before a nation that portrays itself as the “land of the free.” I am proud of the work of our Catholic Charities. This ministry gives flesh to the Church’s constant concern for the poor. I am sorry that the intransigence of the Department of Health and Human Services has made it necessary to defend in court what every American could take for granted until this year.
WHY CATHOLICS COME TO MASS?
. We desire to respond to God’s love “God so loved the world that He sent His only son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”9 Jesus’ love for us led Him to offer Himself on the cross for our salvation. The same saving love of Jesus leads Him to continue to give Himself through the gift of the Eucharist. The word “love” in English, particularly today, has been stripped of much of its beauty and meaning. It often is re‐duced to a “feeling.” In Greek, there are seven words for love and the word for the love God has for us, agape, con‐notes action, a self‐gift. The love we want to have for God is a self‐gift in return, of our time, energy, worries, hopes and joy. The Mass is the best place to thank God for the gifts besides Himself that He gives us — especially life, family, friends, faith and love.

THEOLOGY‐ON‐TAP July 8 – August 1 Theology‐on‐Tap, a speaker and conversation series for people in their 20s and 30s, married and sin‐gle, begins its 32nd year of provid‐ing young adults with opportunities to learn more about the Catholic faith. Participants may attend a presentation at one of 40 locations at Archdio‐cese of Chicago parishes and Newman Centers. TOT is presented four evenings per week throughout the month of July, offering young adults the opportunity to make connections between faith and everyday life, and to en‐gage in conversation with their peers. Presentations focus on aspects of faith and social life of interest to young adults including: truthful relationships, prayer styles, dis‐cerning gifts, friendships and faith in the workplace. Portage Park Farmers’ Market launched its 4th market season Sunday, June 3rd, 2012. My heartfelt thank you to all who helped to organize our Annual 2012 Summerfest. Because of the wonderful weather our Good Lord bestowed on us, as well as the generous involvement of many
parishioners, and the goodness and generosity of our sponsors, we achieved a huge success. The total profit amounted to $23,000. The funds will go towards renovating the McManus Hall. My words of gratefulness go out to so many dedicated people who worked tirelessly to prepare and then coordinate this wonderful event: Fr. Michal Rosa, Zofia Kass, Siostra Bernadeta, Andrzej Parada i Henryk Mroczkowski. It was truly an amazing parish event where we all came together to work side by side and have fun, all ethnic groups, all nationalities worked for the good of our parish. Na wielką nędzę – Miłosierdzie! Jezus Chrystus pokazał wszystkim – raz na zawsze – że Bóg jest zakochany w człowieku, a człowiek może być spokojny i ufny w objęciach Jego Opatrzności. Tymczasem my mamy ciągle trudności z przyjęciem tej Bożej miłości, która obejmuje każdego człowieka niezależnie od jego czynów – dobrych lub złych. Dlaczego dopiero w połowie XX wieku została nam dana Koronka do Miłosierdzia Bożego? Dlaczego zawołanie „Jezu Ufam Tobie” przyjmujemy jako osobiste dopiero teraz, tak późno? Może dlatego, że nasza nędza w końcu sięgnęła dna. Wszystko zło jest głośnym wołaniem o miłość, której nie może dać świat. Dowolna ocena obiektywnej rzeczywistości, podważanie prawa do życia, lekceważenie odwiecznych wartości, takich jak prawda, szacunek, sprawiedliwość, odpowiedzialność, pragnienie przeżywania przyjemności powodują brak świadomości istnienia grzechu i poczucia zła. To zaś domaga się jeszcze mocniejszego wołania: „Jezu Ufam Tobie.” Tak powinien wołać człowiek pokorny, który już wie, że wszystkie wysiłki nasycenia siebie upadły i że nie istnieje nikt, kto mógłby go zaspokoić. Jedynie Jezus zna najgłębsze ludzkie pragnienia i tylko On jest w stanie uczynić człowieka szczęśliwym.
Nabożeństwo do Miłosierdzia Bożego, pokazuje jak Bóg potrafi być wielkoduszny. Jeżeli Bóg przez Św. S. Faustynę mówi, by modlić się przy pomocy Koronki do Jego Miłosierdzia, to po to, aby bezgranicznie oddać się Jego Miłosiernej Miłości. Paradoksalnie, to właśnie te sytuacje życiowe, które są dla nas przykre, i od których chcielibyśmy uciec, kształtują w nas postawę bardziej skłonną do zdania się na Bożą Opatrzność. Dzięki nim uczymy się pokory, która każe nam przyznać, że to Bóg jest wszechmocny a nie my. Daje On człowiekowi prawo dysponowania Jego największymi darami, jakimi są „Ciało, Krew, Dusza i Bóstwo” Jego Jednorodzonego Syna. Pół wieku temu jeszcze nie było to możliwe. Dlaczego? Być może dlatego, że nie doświadczyliśmy głębi swojej nędzy. Dopiero gdy okazała się ona tak okrutnie przykra i tak strasznie bolesna i wszechobecna, pozwoliliśmy się „przekonać”, że jedynym naszym wyjściem jest słuchanie Boga. On bowiem jest nade wszystko Bogiem Miłosierdzia i u Niego należy szukać pomocy, gdy zło chce zapanować nad ludzkim życiem. To też Koronka do Bożego Miłosierdzia jak czytamy w Dzienniczku (Dz. 687) – jest to ostatnia deska ratunku: „chociażby był grzesznik najzatwardzialszy, jeżeli raz tylko zmówi tę koronkę, dostąpi łaski z nieskończonego miłosierdzia mojego.” Koronka powinna być odmawiana zgodnie z tekstem podanym przez Pana Jezusa, powinna być zawsze w liczbie mnogiej. Sens formuły koronki przypomina nam, że praktykowanie miłosierdzia, to pragnienie dobra dla wszystkich. Należy również pamiętać o podstawowych przymiotach jakimi są: wiara, wytrwałość w modlitwie, pełnienie dzieł miłosierdzia i nade wszystko – ufność! Bóg jest wspaniałym Ojcem naszym i abyśmy umieli jak S. Faustyna, Jan Paweł II, Ks. Michał Sopoćko bezgranicznie Mu zaufać, nawet wówczas, gdy rozum podpowiada coś zupełnie innego. Wszyscy jesteśmy słabi, wszyscy popełniamy grzechy, ale wszyscy możemy powstać, prosząc w pokorze
i ufności, wołając: Jezu Ufam Tobie – Trzymaj mnie przy sobie!!!

Serdecznie dziekuję wszystkim osobom za pomoc w zorganizowaniu naszego pikniku parafialnego (Summerfest). Dzięki wspaniałej pogodzie, którą obdarzył nas Pan Bóg oraz dobrej organizacji i zaangażowaniu wielu osób jako woluntariuszy, dobroci i hojności sponsorów odnieśliśmy wspaniały sukces. Całkowity dochód, po odliczeniu niezbędnych wydatków wyniósł 23 tys. dolarów. Pieniądze te chcemy wykorzystać na remont sali parafialnej McManus. Słowa podziękowania kieruję w stronę osób, które wiele dni pracowały i poświęciły swój czas oraz umiejętności, aby przygotować, a później koordynować to wspaniałe wydarzenie parafialne: Ks. Business travel at times is really cool. New places. New faces. New challenges. At other times, though, all you want to do is get home. Here’s my latest itinerary (which I did not dictate): up at 3:00 AM on recent Monday for a 5:00 AM flight to Sacramento; rent a car and drive to Stockton; buy over $200 worth of groceries from three different stores for my quality assurance presentation the next day; schlep all that product to the hotel; unpack it, along with the two totes of equipment and supplies I’d sent in advance; up at 4:00 AM on Tuesday to set everything up for a 9:00 AM gig that started late and ran into the afternoon; clean all my gear up and re‐pack the totes for UPS delivery back to Chicago; drive back to Sacramento for a connecting flight through Phoenix that got home‐‐with delays‐‐about 1:00 AM Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. As I told my wife, I was tired this time out before I even began. The Phoenix to Chicago flight was packed, and I ended up in a center seat near the back. I barely made the connection to begin with because of a Sacramento delay, so when I settled in I grum‐bled to anyone who’d listen that I’d be having dinner in Chicago well after midnight. The man in the window seat nodded under‐standingly. The woman on the aisle joked that I could at least buy an over‐priced in‐flight meal. I’d missed breakfast and lunch so I tried doing just that, but when the flight attendant made her way back to me, I learned that the food was gone. “Huh?” I said. She apologized, explaining that many of the others on board had or‐
dered, too. Then the woman on the aisle told me she had half a turkey‐wrap and I was welcome to it. Said she’d just eaten the other half and she couldn’t finish it and please, I should take it. I declined multiple times until she showed me the goods. I said thanks and devoured it. The flight attendant was impressed by the woman’s graciousness, and so was I. Over the next three hours, Anne and I spoke of her work (she teaches English in an Oakland middle‐school), a decline in proper language (she wore a Grammar Wars t‐shirt), guitar humans vs. piano humans (she has a degree in music), politics (she leans left), money (she’s struggling), Catholicism (she has issues with the Church but still claims the faith as her own), and her Chicago visit (she was coming in for a family celebration). Landing at O’Hare, I told her it had been great speaking with her. I also thanked her again for the sandwich, figuring right then and there that I’d write a future column about her. Then I saw today’s Gospel and smiled: it’s the one in which Jesus sends his disciples into the world, in‐structing them to take no food but to live off the graciousness of those that would receive them. I emailed Anne later and told her she was a Godsend, literally. She emailed back saying “I believe you were sent to inspire me to rethink my religious fervor.” Per‐haps we were both fed exactly what we needed that night. Suste‐nance takes many forms, after all. And depending on circum‐stance, it can leave us both filled and fulfilled at the very same time .
