MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION CONTRIBUTORS

Let me first begin by thanking Jim Bull for everything he has done for the local racing scene and where he has taken MRA. Jim has been an inspiration to me over the years as I have progressed as a photographer and entered the world of off-road media. Secondly, as you might know, Engle Publishing has purchased MRA from Jim and brought me on to fill Jim’s shoes as editor. The employees at Engle have been great to work with and are dedicated to progressing MRA on the same path as Jim was aimed. As Jim mentioned, we will use their resources to take MRA to new levels, yet continue to bring you the best amateur racing coverage in the country.

Now, to introduce myself: My name is Shane Hartman. My racing career was never something spectacular, but I have enjoyed every moment. Being that I have bled blue and white ever since I was a little tike, I only saw fit to head off to Penn State after high

school. While earning my degree in supply chain and information systems, I had the time and opportunity to travel to several national races. I picked up my first camera to help offset my costs. My artistic side was quickly revived as I became dedicated to learning and advancing my photography skills. Shortly after a career-ending shoulder injury, I sat in my room and decided to sell off my race machines and become a self-proclaimed race photographer.

I quickly advanced through cameras and equipment to where I stand today, just two years out of college. Over the last couple years, I have had the pleasure of working with many great companies, like MRA, RacerX, ATVSport, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and many more. While most of my work was on the national level, my local ties and interests remained strong. I began RoxstarImages.com in an effort to bring more to the local event photography realm. I wanted to give riders and fans more options for printing and a few different products, like wall graphics, that they had never before had the chance to purchase.

Now that you know about me, I would like to know more about you, the readers. As we grow MRA, we are looking for interesting stories to feature as well as rider profiles. If you have any suggestions or would like to be a featured rider, please shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Please keep an eye out for me and all of the MRA contributors out on the track. Come up and introduce yourself, as we all love to meet new racers and fans.

Stryker, Desiderio Capture PA State Motocross Championships

26th Annual Tony D. Motocross Schools Pennsylvania State Motocross Championships

Just slightly less than 400 motocross enthusiasts came out to Hurricane Hills for one of the biggest races of the season, the 26th Annual Tony D. Motocross Schools Pennsylvania State Motocross Championships. The best riders from the Keystone State and beyond

came to Hurricane Hills to compete for the coveted title of Pennsylvania State Motocross Champion.

Suzuki pilot, Michael Stryker, topped the podium of the extremely competitive Collegeboy division with a perfect 1-1 score. Stryker gated third in the opening moto and moved into the point position by lap three and pulled away to take the

win with an eight second advantage. In the final moto, Stryker led the start and rode to the win uncontested, taking the checkered flag 11-seconds ahead of Eric Balawejder, who earned the runner-up tier of the podium via his 3-2 rides. Michael Sowa completed the podium, carding a 2-3 for the day.

Ben Rio, Sowa and Stryker led the start of the opening Collegeboy moto. Rio and Stryker began a battle for the lead shortly after the start of lap two that wasn’t decided until a lap later. Sowa, Balawejder and Nicholas Hoit rounded out the top five. Stryker closed the gap

to bike length on Rio by the start of lap three. Rio tried to block Stryker’s inside line pass at the entrance to the tree line section but the move backfired, he cross-rutted and went down, handing the lead to Stryker. Sowa, Balawejder, Joe Fritz Jr. and Hoit advanced. Stryker started lap four with an eight second lead that remained unchanged at the checkers.

Sowa, Balawejder, Hoit and Fritz closed out the top five.

Stryker, Sowa, Balawejder, Fritz and Rio led the start in the final Collegeboy moto. Stryker pulled away and had a six second advantage after two and a half laps. Half way into lap three, Balawejder made the pass for second in the big sweeper by the start. Sowa was displaced to third. The battle for fourth came down to the final section of the racecourse on the last lap when Fritz miss-timed the first obstacle of the rhythm section and Rio slipped by taking fifth. Stryker took the checkered flag 11-seconds ahead Balawejder. Sowa, Rio

and Fritz followed.Nick Desiderio, Rio,

Robbie Zahuak and Matt Moore led the start of the first 250 B moto. Desiderio left the field behind to start lap two with a six-second advantage. Rio closed the gap on Zahuak and made the pass for second in the rhythm section at the end of the lap. Zahuak was relegated to third. Desiderio’s lead was

ten-seconds by the start of lap three. Second and third were unchanged when Travis Clarke and Kyle Kaznowski moved up, securing fourth and fifth. Desiderio got the win with a hefty 23-second lead. Rio, Zahuak, Clarke and Kaznowski rounded out the top five.

Andrew Chacho, Desiderio and Kaznowski led the start of the final 250 B moto. After two and a quarter laps the top five running order was; Desiderio, Kaznowski, Chacho, Zahuak and Clarke. A quarter of a lap later, two major crashes altered the running order to Desiderio, Zahuak, Rio, Clarke and Nick Palazzolo. Desiderio got another easy win, taking the checkers with an 11-second lead. Zahuak, Rio, Clarke and Jesse Deryke followed.

Desiderio (1-1) topped the podium. Zahuak (3-2) took second and Rio (2-3) third.

TRAIL-WAY SPEEDWAYPENNSYLVANIA SHORT TRACKWinsett Wins at Trail-Way STBy Len & Ben BreechHANOVER, PA.

After racing borrowed machines occasionally for a few seasons, Ricky Winsett made the plunge and bought his own machine from Phil Libhart. After a few races to get the machine sorted out, he showed his stuff at Trail-Way Speedway’s fall event, which is normally one of the most highly anticipated events. In the Open A final, Jason Isennock led Winsett, Cory Long, Mike Poe and Cory Texter off the second turn. Poe took the lead into three on the second lap. Coming off four on the next laps, Winsett took the lead. Up front, Winsett and Poe settled into a consistent pace, leaving Texter, Isennock and Long to battle for third.

As the evening went on the cool clear day had the dew starting to settle on the track, causing the track to start to get slick. After four red flags and only two laps completed, the Open Sportsman race was called because of track conditions and paid from the starting lineup, even if the rider had crashed out earlier.

Derek Hersh continued his season long domination of the 250 and Open B classes with another double win. 250 had him taking the lead on his Don’s Kawasaki/Lancaster Harley Davidson sponsored Kawasaki from Tyler Stacey, Ryan Connelly and Jeremiah Snow. Snow took third into three on lap three and in the

closing laps pressured Stacey for second.

Becca Zafia led the 125 field with Connelly, Snow and Kevin Bills close behind. After a close battle, Snow took second off two on the fifth lap and got under Zafia into three on the next lap for the lead and win.

The 85s again had a good battle. Colton Smith led Cameron Smith, Ryan Varnes, Cody Ebersol and Dustin Healey off turn two. Healey took third at the end of the second lap, with Varnes retaking it two laps later. Healey took third for good on the next lap into three. As they started the seventh lap, Cameron kicked it up a notch and took the lead and held it to the end.

Colton held onto the 65 lead the entire distance for the win with Healey, Brandon Price, Kyle McGrane and Tristan Avery behind. Healey stayed with a length or two the entire, while Avery secured fourth at the end of lap two.

Off turn two, Chris Klinefelter took the 750 lead from Mark Myers, Jason Isennock, Jim Chapman and Mike Klopp. Isennock dropped out on the second lap, while Myers took the lead on the third lap, but Klinefelter retook it on the fifth lap and held on till the end.

The 40 + had Klopp leading Mike Mester, Warren Diem, Todd Kendig and Lowell Wherley. Diem dropped out on the third lap, with Wherley, making his second start of the year, started picking off riders, taking second from Kendig on the sixth lap.

Jim Hollister led Klopp, Rich Mellinger, Ken Yoder and Kendig off

two in the 30 +. Yoder finally took the lead at the halfway flags from a tiring Hollister, while Mellinger and Klopp got by him on the sixth lap in their battle for second.

YORK, PA. SEP. 28The York Fairgrounds. Magical words

to a lot of motorcycle racers on the East Coast. The pea gravel half-mile was the site of a traditional Memorial Day stop for the pro riders up until some spectator problems caused a cancellation after 1994. But through the efforts of Darryl and Candy Baer/Mark Stambaugh/Don’s Kawasaki/Lancaster Harley-Davidson and others, motorcycle racing returned. This time, instead of a pro program, it was an amateur program and with no National running, there were many Pro riders signing in. The only thing that didn’t turn out was the weather. It rained heavily Friday night and was raining when they announced they were going to try Sunday. Conditions were slightly better, but no where near perfect.

With over 225 riders returning in twenty one classes, things were in hurry up mode from the start. With encroaching darkness and no lights, most of the finals were reduced in laps to get as many as possible completed. The featured 450 Pro event was moved from last to the fourth final run. Cory Texter led the field off the line with Matt Weidman, Raun

Wood, James Rispoli and Brandon Robinson close behind. Off the fourth turn on the opening lap, Weidman put his Super Trapp/Shoei/ Silkolene Honda into the lead and checked out. Rispoli took control of the third place battle by the third lap and cut a little into Texter’s margin.

The Open A class had several twins against the Honda and Rotax singles. Off the start, Rick Winsett led Brian Phillips, Mike Poe, Weidman and Rispoli. By the end of the second lap, Weidman had got the Harley rolling and took the lead from Winsett, with Rispoli starting to get the feel for the White’s Harley Davidson and moved into third. Weidman held another large margin at the line.

The 30 + had Ken Mohler leading Kevin Varnes, Roy Miller and Jim Haas off the second turn. Haas took the lead off four on the opening lap, but Mohler retook it on the following lap, joined by Mike Klopp and Mark Filbrown. They stayed very close trying to dodge each others spray as they jockeyed for the win that went to Mohler.

Eric Stump scored a pair of B class wins, 250 and Open. In the 250, Matt Zacher took the lead from Stump, Derek Hersh, Tyler Phillips and Erin Kissinger. Kissinger drifted high in two on the second lap, letting Jeremiah Snow by. Stump was close on the third lap and took the lead as they took the white flag while Phillips and Snow pressured Hersh for third in the late laps.

Jesse Long grabbed the lead in the

last final, Open B, before darkness called the program from Stump, Kissinger and Zacher. Travis Diem moved into the fray on the next lap along with Hersh. As they started the last lap, Stump took the lad from Long.

Colton Smith led Brandon Price, Dalton Gauthier and Dustin Healey at the start of the 65 final. Healey shot into the lead as they ended the first lap. On the third lap, Tristan Avery worked his way up to second.

The 85 (7-11) had Colton Smith in front of Ryan Varnes, Avery, and Dylan Winsett. Winsett drifted back, while Cameron Smith joined the five-way battle for the lead along with Mike Mesler. Avery took the lead at halfway, while Mesler took first off two on the following lap.

Klopp took the 40 +, with Texter taking the Open Twin final and Richard Pfanders won the Lightweight Vintage. The winners paid from the lineup due to darkness were John Long in the 250 Sportsman, Rispoli in Open Sportsman and Jason Isennock in the 750 Vintage.

NEWBERRYTOWN. PA. OCTOBER 4, 2008

Nine years after he won the only Pro race at Susquehanna Speedway, Mike Varnes returned as a regular A rider and easily took the 30 + class on a track that he admitted came to him by the time this final ran. When he ran the Open A early in the proceedings, he finished sixth against a hoard of hot shot kids on a still tacky track. When the 30 + came to the line, the track had gotten dry and slick, just what he was looking for. At the green light, Varnes put his White’s Harley Davidson to the front and pulled away, letting Roy Miller, Mike Klopp and Rich Mellinger. Miller kept just in front of the pack, while Mellinger started pressuring Klopp after the second lap By the fourth lap, Mellinger took third and pressured Miller for second till the end.

Cory Strickler took point in the Open A final from Austin Greenland, Cory Texter, Mike Poe and John Long. Greenland put his Greenland and Son/Moose Racing Products Honda into the lead on the back straight of the second lap. Once in front, he kept a comfortable distance over the Texter/Poe/Strickler battle for second, that went to Poe with one lap to go.

The same basic cast of characters returned later for the Open Sportsman that had Toby

Stay surprisingly leading off two, but Poe took the lead entering three. Greenland pressured Stay, taking second on the fourth lap. Cory Long Stay for third in the late laps, but couldn’t get past. Dalton Winkler took fifth entering one on the sixth lap.

Miller led Long, Tyler Phillips, Travis Diem and Derek Hersh out of two in the 250 Sportsman final. Long slipped under Miller for the lead entering one on the second lap and pulled away. Phillips dropped out on the third lap.

Mike Mester was the fastest starter in the several starts of the 40 + final. On the official one, he led Klopp, Lowell Wherley, Tom Majeski and Ray Jenkins. Majeski, on a borrowed machine, took second when Klopp drifted high. Klopp retook it a lap later and challenged Mester unsuccessfully in the late laps. Dallas Baer and Majeski fought for third to the end.

The 85 class again had a good battle. Ryan Varnes led Dylan Winsett, Cameron Smith and Cody Ebersol off turn two. Smith was in second before the end of the opening lap and got by Varnes down the back straight on the second lap. Varnes stayed close through the rest of the final.

After Derek Hersh easily won the 250 B and Open B finals, Ryan Connelly led Phillips, Ryan Bills and Matt Trout in the 125 final. Phillips took the lead off four on the second lap and pulled

away. Trout unsuccessfully pressured Connelly in the late laps for second.

Texter took the Open Twin over Stay while Brandon Price doubled up in the 50 Senior (7-8) and 65 classes. Damon ream held off John Winsett III for the 50 Shaft win and Nathan Reichert traded the 50 Chain lead with Zack Kolsovsky several times before coming out on top.

Clark (97), Phil Nicoletti (partially hidden) and Justin Murray (406) lead the start of the final 250 Pro/Expert moto

“Flyin” Phil Nicoletti Nabs Three NY State MX Championships

26th Annual Kawasaki/Michelin New York State Motocross Championships

540 of the best motocross riders from the northeast came to the Broome-Tioga Sports Center to race the full National track for the 26th Annual Kawasaki/Michelin New York State Motocross Championships.

Kawasaki backed, and soon to join the Honda backed, Team Solitaire, Phil Nicoletti, dominated the competition. Nicoletti’s performance also demonstrated his mud riding skills. Substantial rainfall made track conditions treacherous both days but Nicoletti rode unfazed, riding like there hadn’t been any rain or mud at all.

Nicoletti topped the Open 4-Stroke and Collegeboy classes with perfect 1-1-1’s and then continued his domination in the

250 Pro/Expert class on Sunday, winning both moto’s going away. Nicoletti almost made a clean sweep of every class entered; winning the first Open Pro/Expert moto but a flat tire in the final moto resulted in a DNF that ended his chances a perfect sweep.

Nicoletti, Casey Clark and Mike Stryker led the start of the opening 250 Pro/expert moto. Nicoletti started lap two with an 11-second advantage that increased to 15-seconds by the start of lap three. Behind Nicoletti, Clark and Stryker swapped positions with Clark finally taking second for good by lap four. Nicoletti took the checkers 26-seconds ahead of Clark. Stryker, Jay Weller and Matt Eastman closed out the top five.

Clark, Nicoletti, Justin Murray and Stryker led the start of the final 250 Pro/Expert moto. Nicoletti took the point in the front rhythm section. Colton Harrison, Eastman and Stryker rounded out the top five. Nicoletti pulled away, starting lap three with a 16-second lead that decreased to 15 at the white flag and only 12 at the checkers. Clark, Harrison, Willy Shatrau and Dave Sterritt completed the top five.

Nicoletti (1-1) topped the podium. Clark (2-2) took second and Stryker (3-6) third.

Zach Rice, Kyle Jackson, Cole Fredericks, Dan Netti and Sean Ballard led the start of the first Open Mini moto. Jackson took the point half way into lap one and had a whopping 46-second lead at the white flag. Jackson got an easy win. Aaron Zielfelder, Doug Miller, Netti and Tyler Smith followed.

Kyle Pollak, Paul Plewa, Rice and Ballard led the start of the second Open Mini moto. By the start of lap two, Pollak continued to hold the point with Ballard moving from fifth to second. Jackson, Netti and Zielfelder rounded out the top five. Pollak took the white flag with an eight second advantage that increased to nine at the checkered

flag. Ballard, Jackson, Zielfelder and Pete Schachtler closed out the top five.

Jackson, Miller, Schachtler, Pollak and Ballard led the start of the final Open Mini moto. By the end of lap one, Jackson continued to hold the point when Pollak moved from fourth to second in a half a lap. Just after the start of lap two, Pollak made a mistake that allowed Schachtler and Miller to re-take second and third. Martin Matt held fifth. Jackson had a seven second lead at the white flag but Pollak was closing the gap after passing both Miller and Schachtler to re-take second. When Jackson emerged from the front section, Pollak was only three seconds back. Pollak used lapped traffic to his advantage and made the pass on the huge downhill ski jump taking the lead. Jackson went down hard on the following tabletop landing, securing the win for Pollak. Pollak took the checkers with an 11-second lead. Schachtler, Miller, Jackson and Ballard rounded out the top five.

Jackson (1-3-4) topped the podium. Miller (3-6-3) took runner-up and Zielfelder (2-4-6) third.

Story by Megan Ego and Michael Salerno

Early in the morning as people stirred from there trailers and a line trucks with their bike or quads in tow were in for a great day of racing for the 13th round of the PA State Hare Scramble Series held at Rausch Creek in Tremont, Pa presented by Moose. Rain from days before had left some serious mud holes out in the bush but left the motocross section

quite dry. The youth bike and quads had their hands full with most riders making 18 laps of drop offs, tight woods and some fast wide open section. Once again Alex Fell and Rausch’s track crew made a challenging course. Megan Ego talked to racer Jerry Lynn and said “Best course I ever rode on up there”. Jerry had quite the battle on his hands at this race with Tom Cichon. They had been going back and forth the whole race, and in the end Tom came out with the victory for the Super Senior class.

In the morning race for the bikes was Devrynn Clugston taking the overall on his 110cc Honda over Daulton Fry riding the Kawasaki machine. Youth ATV’s were up next, and saw Christian Smith riding a smart race and was able to take the overall by edging out Westly Wolf also riding an Apex 90cc

quad. The 85cc bike were moved onto an abbreviated course which the adult bikes and quads were run on later. These kids were really pushing hard but Tegan

Temple was able to keep the pace for the entire hour and take the overall win. Two more KTM’s were mounted by Landon Wolfe and Dieter Willenbrock rounded out the

podium.Once the track was changed

to the longer course, the adult bikes were on the line searching for the best place to make right hander in to the

woods. First off the line and grabbing the holeshot was the GEICO Yamaha rider of Eric Rodger’s. He was able to ride strong and consistent taking the win over factory Husberg rider of Jedebiah Haines in the “A” class. The “C” class saw 20 riders go

into the first corner and at the end of the 2hrs of fun was Ryan Francis with a 5min lead over second place.

As far as the ATV’s, it was Borich riding the Rockstar Makita Suzuki taking the holeshot in the “A” class and never looking back. There

were three Vet +30 riders in the top ten showing these young kids how it’s done.

Two rounds left in the PA State Hare Scramble Series. Next races will be at Hurricane Hills and then ending in October at Dutchmen Motocross Park.

The inaugural Suzuki Triple Crown race was one of the most anticipated races of the season. Collecting the top riders from the MDRA, PAMX and the Ultimate MX series, fans would surely be in for a treat. Many rolled in early on Friday for a day of practice which would prove to give them an extra edge as mother nature rolled through Saturday with a large rain systems. The track promoter and Doublin Gap owner, Rod Yentzer was forced to cancel Saturdays events and turn the three moto format race into a single day two moto format. While many would

fail attend Sundays events, Rod turned a poor situation into a great day of racing with beautiful weather to stand behind him.

Before racing kicked off, it was announced, at the riders meeting, that the Triple Crown event will return next year and be held at Jeff Cernic’s Pleasure Valley Raceway. At a race such as this, it is sometime necessary to grab just an extra quarter twist to stay up top, and that is exactly what many did. As the gates dropped and the day progressed, current champions would add another crown to their collection, while others were able to rebound from a sloppy season and shine.

WEBB MINI BIKE RACE - PAGODA RACEWAYSeptember 20, 2008 - by Andrew Mahey - roxstarimages.com

This year’s Third Annual Craig Webb Pit bike Race was a huge hit. Organizing the event in his own backyard, Jeff Webb managed to bring in over 70 rider entries and raised $5500 which was donated to the American Heart Association. Between the live band, pig roast, free food and raffle this was one of the best put together fundraisers I had ever seen. The event was one all around good time bringing in many donating sponsors which really helped Jeff make the event happen. Riders such as Tyson Clark, Kyle Davis, James Max and the Reitz brothers were truly a blast to watch rip around the pro built backyard track. 2up minis made an appearance making the event

have a big race feel and helped scored the participating riders. Jeff would like to thank all the sponsors and riders that made their donations and hopes the event is even bigger and better next year.

The first ever red bull Moto GP race in Indianapolis, Indiana sure didn’t disappoint the large crowd on hand. Even though Hurricane Ike tried to take over the show, “The Doctor”, Valentino Rossi made sure he stayed the main focus. The heavy rains put a delay on the race but they got rolling just around 3pm with heavy rain still continuing to come down.

Nicky Hayden from Owensboro, K e n t u c k y stormed into the lead and was very determined to grab his first Moto GP win of the year. Rossi, hailing from Italy, passed his teammate Jorge Lorenzo a couple laps into the race

and put his target on Hayden. Rossi, who is currently leading the overall points reeled in Hayden and they put on a cat and mouse show for more then half the race. Hayden had the straight away speed on his Repsol Honda and Rossi would inch up to him every corner. The condition started

to worsen and on lap 13 Rossi powered his Yamaha into the lead and never looked back. Hayden kept him honest for most of the race until he was pressured late by Jorge Lorenzo.

The race was red flagged on lap 20 (8 laps shy of the scheduled 28 laps). Behind Lorenzo, there was a heated battle for 4th between 2007 Moto GP world champion

Casey Stoner, JiR Scot H o n d a ’ s A n d r e a D o v i z i o s o , and young texan Ben S p i e s . The AMA C h a m p i o n Spies was c o m p e t i n g in only his

3rd ever Moto GP and put on a great showing finishing a close 6th in the harsh conditions.

F r e n c h m a n Sylvain Guintoli was 7th, with Spaniard Dani Pedrosa of the Repsol Honda Team 8th followed closely by Aussie Chris Vermuelen. Four seconds back, San Carlo Honda’s Alex de Angelis from Italy finished 10th.

There were 4 americans in the field in the Moto GP class. Hayden(2nd), S p i e s ( 6 t h ) , H o p k i n s ( 1 4 t h ) , Edwards(15th).

Earlier in the day, a young rider who has raced a handful of dirttrack races around the district six area, PJ Jacobsen made his 125 GP debut. Growing up racing dirttrack at tracks such as Trail-ways and Path Valley, Jacobsen is the youngest ever American to race in Moto GP at age 15. Jacobsen, from New York ran as high as 20th before the 125 race got delayed and he finished 22nd. It was a very

respectable showing for the young gun in the tsunami conditions. The only other american and Moto GP regular, Stevie Bonsey finished 9th. Spaniard, Nicolas Terol won the 125 GP race on his Jack & Jones Aprilia.

The Thunder in the Sand event has been an event that local racers look forward to each year. It is a chance for them to experience a different compound surface and be forced to rethink their set ups. The upside is that the event comes twice a year. While the spring event was plagued with some bad weather, the fall event was blessed with clear skies and perfect racing temperatures. After driving across the beach to the gate entrance, it was quickly known that within the pits was the 2008

West Lites Champion and New Jersey native, Jason Lawrence. As many know, JLaw was suspended and this event would mark his return to racing while on high watch probation. While he dominated the 250A class, he would constantly be hounded by Adam Blessing who put in a great ride aboard a 250 two stroke that looked to be nearly stock. Blessing would go on to win the 450a class while runner up Ronnie Stewart would go on to claim the Collegeboy class win. The Quad C class was in force with 5 groups and over 60 entries. In Quad A, it was Donny Lysinger coming back from a holeshot pile up, to claim the moto win and overall victory. Another noteworthy event was Bren Marra dishing out his national caliber skills on the 200-300 class aboard his Cobra.

The second weekend in October brought warm and sunny conditions to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club in Birdsboro, PA for their annual fall supercross / motocross weekend.

This weekend’s race was a combination event offering up the 12th and final round of the 2008 Delmarva MX Series sponsored by MotoJockey.com along with the new for 2008 Pagoda / VPE Big Bucks Weekend.

Everything started off on Saturday evening when close to 150 racers took to Pagoda’s supercross course for a night of racing under the lights. Heat races were run in 13 divisions to determine the gate picks for the evenings main events.

First out of the gates was the College Boy division with Pagoda regular Larry Mutschler grabbing the main event win after finishing second to Lee Chavous in the heat race. Then making his Pagoda debut, 2008 Loretta’s Motocross A champion Taylor Futrell would take to the Pagoda SX course and cruise to the win followed by D6 Iron Man Barry Carsten then Oswego, NY’s William Shatrau. Some of the hottest racing came

in the Open Mini division were Kawasaki pilot’s Tyler Connor and Luke Palonicola would bang bars in both the heat and main events finishing one – two respectively. After the event the Pagoda club members would take to the track to make the transition for Sunday’s motocross race.

Sunday would dawn much

the same as Saturday with the exception of the larger crowd that came to get their last chance at those valuable Delmarva points and their share of the extra purse that local performance shop VPE put up for the pro / expert divisions. There were over 20 racers in each

of the premier expert classes with over $350.00 per moto on the line in both cases.

It would be all Taylor Futrell grabbing the extra loot on top of the 120 % payout that the Delmarva Series offers. Futrell would cruise to all four moto wins as well he should carrying the title of fastest A guy in the country. In addition both expert classes ran 15 minute plus 2 lap motos to the delight of the crowd. Pagoda even offered up the long moto classes for both 85cc divisions to cap off the day.

Pagoda’s next motocross event has been rescheduled to November 2nd and they have a junk car race on November 9th which is always a ton of fun. Check out their website for all the details at: www.pagodamotorcycleclub.com and check out this weekends race photos at: jimbullphoto.com.

It is usually that time of year again for the leaves to start changing and the temperature to start dropping but not at Happy Ramblers! The sun was out, the leaves still intact and the weather was hot all day long. Happy Ramblers hosted the 9th round of the PAMX State Championship with a fairly decent rider turnout.

The track was beautiful and fairly fast. Brandon Garlock #108 had trouble in his first moto, pulling his goggles but came back to win his second for a 4th overall. Jason McConnell Jr. #721 went 1-1 in both of the supermini divisions; Tony

Archer was also the man to beat going 1-1 in schoolboy pushing Lunceford out. Ashlee was pulling out all of the stops but just couldn’t beat Phillips or Shuckhart who took 2nd and 1st in 250 A. The women’s gate had a great number of riders with 20 combined for the gate with Amber Huges securing a win.

Unfortunately towards the end of the day when everything usually dies down there was a lot of confusion and commotion when the C gate was slated to kick off. After the second turn going into the back stretch of the woods there was about a 15 rider pile up causing a red flag on the race. The second go at the gate proved successful and the rest of the moto continued without difficulty.

The final round of the PAMX American Suzuki ATV Regional Championship Series and the District 6 ATV Ultimate Championship Series came to Sleepy Hollow MX Park located in Fredricksburg, Pa. With beautiful blue skies, Indian summer weather and ATV racing on Sleepy’s main track what more could you ask for!?

Randy Lehr was really on his game this weekend going 1 for 1 in 450“A” class. In the Pro-Am class, Bobby Ross was able take the 2nd moto win and the overall edging out Lehr and recent crowned ATVA National Champion Shawn Welsh. Nick Kohan on the #21 Suzuki went 1-2 to take the overall win in the 450”C”. But the real drama was about to unfold in the Women’s division.

All season long, the #72m of Myka Carpenter and Kristen Weiss

battled for the PAMX Women’s ATV champsionship. Myka came on strong in the beginning of the

year but struggle mid season and allowed Kristen aboard her BossOffRoadRacing.com Yamaha to tie it up going in the last round. Unfortunately for Kristen, a broken wrist, which she found out after a trip to ER once the race was over, plagued her all day. The first moto was Michelle Sucui nailing the holeshot and would go 1-1 for the day. In Second was Myka riding consistent lap times because she knew she had to finish in front of Kristen to take the championship. First moto ended with Myka in 2nd and Kristen in 3rd. The second moto was a whole different story. Kristen with her broken wrist obviously in severe pain would cause her to DNF. Even Myka couldn’t keep the gremlins at bay. Railing the berm coming into Vender row on last lap, her chain pops off and is jammed hard between the sprocket and the swingarm. If you don’t know Myka, she has some of the most dedicated fans. They rush to her side but as spectators they not allowed to help a racer out. But they

did give her moral support as they cheered her on as she tried pushing the quad toward the finishing line. Even with the race over Myka is still determined to cross the finish line. And who is there to help….Kristen. Even as fierce competitor, the respect for each other shines through and helps Myka to the finish line. As she crossed, Myka’s friends and family were there to congratulate her one winning the championship.

This is what racing is about. Two racer fighting hard all year long and at the end, they come together as friends. Winning is nice but it’s the people that make this sport great.

Congratulation to all the champions of the PAMX and District 6 Ultimate series.

Reflections by: Kelsey Greenby: Kelsey Greenby: Kelsey Green

Sadly enough, the racing season here in the Northeast is coming to a close, sadly enough, and it has seemed to fly by so fast! It seems like just yesterday I was riding with a hoody on, and here I am doing it again in the fall! As I sit back, and reflect upon all the happenings this year, so much has happened. One strong suggestion I make to every racer is to reflect upon the past season in your own way. Whether that is to simply think about it, write it down, look at pictures, or my personal favorite, scrapbook. Why you may ask? Because you can learn from some mistakes you made, and remember victorious times, and the endless fun. In the following article I have included my personal reflection of 2008.

Rewind to this past winter, March was when it actually was nice enough to do some decent riding and racing, locally. Also in March, I attended a Gary Bailey school that was over a period of three days. This was first time I had attended a riding school that was longer than a few hours. Yes, to answer everyone’s question, he carries a whip, and will use it. Thankfully, I was victim to it only once (for not having my hand on the clutch), and trust me, it was enough to do things his way from then on! He praised my body positioning, but scolded that I need to ‘push my limits’ more.

Loretta Lynns (the race that all racers craze over) was something that I, too was aspiring toward this year. We jumped into area qualifiers full-speed qualifying in both Northeast and Southeast. I had never been this nervous to race, ever. Until my first moto at Tomahawk, I lined up with a lot of girls, most of whom I didn’t even know; I was very jittery (I have never been to a qualifier). The gate dropped, and I got a 2nd place start, and then passed for the lead! We were ecstatic, but unfortunately 2nd moto I got a flat tire (I still qualified). Lake Sugartree was the Southeast qualifier, and thankfully made that as well, despite the rain, mud, and crashes that came our way.

After area qualifiers are the regionals on the road to Loretta’s. Though for me, a crash Memorial Day weekend left me unconscious, which put a big halt on that journey. Mom and dad did extensive research

to pinpoint when exactly it would be appropriate for me to ride again. The crash scared me, mainly because it was the first time I was knocked out, but it was mostly a letdown that I couldn’t ride for a month (and I’d miss regionals). I was ‘sentenced’ not to work out for two weeks, and ride for at least four. With the time off I went to races to cheer my friends on, and plan a girls riding school. I am glad to say that I have fully recovered from that one!

May thru June I was swamped with getting everything prepared for the riding school, and etching=2 0to ride! The first week end of June was jam-packed! Friday night I graduated high school, Saturday was the girls riding class, and I begged Dad to let me ride on Sunday. The riding class on Saturday came and went too quickly (as they always do)! It was blistering hot, but I believe every girl had a nice day (minus those who got sick from the heat), and learned a thing or two.

Luckily for me I didn’t miss any MDRA races this year even with my time off (due to my injury), and pulled off a win in the Women’s class. I have seen a drastic increase of entries of girls, and it’s awesome! I am very proud to say that the women have consistently been having a full enough class to earn our own moto. We even had a weekend where there were SEVENTEEN of us lined up to race! On average at an MDRA race there was 10 women signed up this year, that number is higher than last year, and I hope will be increasing continuously.

This year has been full of ups and downs (more ups though). I am proud to have won the women’s class for MDRA. Also, holding a second girls riding class was an accomplishment that I hope to continue annually. As far as this year and the aspect of my fitness, I believe my cardiovascular endurance is good, but, like most females in this sport, strength is always something to work on. One of the many things I have learned this year is that for one to advance in the sport, they must practice as hard, if not harder, than they race. I am going to strive to apply that concept fully next season. For 2009 my goal is to race at Loretta’s, and finish exceptionally well.

Shawn UlikowskiThis month’s NJ Motocross

spotlight is with Shawn Ulikowski. Shawn is living the dream as a factory wrench. Not bad for a kid who grew up racing at Raceway Park. Here is more with Shawn.

Tell us a little about yourself. I am now 32 years old and living in Mooresville, NC with my wife Davi. We just built our dream home overlooking Lake Norman and we couldn’t be happier. More importantly, we are expecting our first child in late December.

You were a successful local expert

racer what made you decide to pick up a wrench and move to California? Well saying I was successful is very generous of you, but I’ll take the compliment. Moving to California was a matter of practicality I wanted to make a living in the industry and wrenching was a way to do it.

Any advice for someone looking into breaking into the field? First of all, be aware of the demands of the job. It is not all glamour under the lights of a stadium. You have to start at the bottom and work your way up like in any profession. In my case, Joel Dengler gave me an opportunity and I ran with it from there. Check your ego at the door, work without complaint and most importantly network within the industry.

Best thing about the job? The best

thing about the job is simply doing what you love for a living. I know it sounds cliché, but really how many people can honestly say they get up and enjoy their jobs.

Worst thing about the job? Worst thing about the job is simple: airports and airplanes. I’m still waiting for them to figure that whole Star Trek time travel thing out.

Proudest moment as a mechanic? Proudest moment as a mechanic was definitely winning the 2002 West Championship with Travis Preston. Championships are the sole focus for every team, rider and mechanic. Plus we beat Stewart that year. I only know one other guy who can lay claim to that and he is permanently out to pasture….

Over your years in the business you worked for some of the most well respected teams. Pro Circuit, Factory Honda and now Joe Gibbs Racing. Are there any similarities between all of

them? All the top race teams have certain elements of similarity between them. Pro Circuit and Honda are established and their records speak for themselves. However don’t be surprised to see JGR making a strong showing in the coming years. Personnel wise, all the right pieces are in place. Jeremy Albrecht, as we all know has deep roots in the sport. Along with team owner Coy Gibbs, they have put together a truly professional organization. We will be here in the years to come and will be successful.

How about differences? The only difference is that we are not located in the epicenter of motocross which is still obviously So Cal. At times, their weather may be more cooperative in the winter, but that is all I can think of. Carmichael, Stewart, Reed, Ferry, Millsaps, Byrne and young guys like Stroupe and Dungey all call the Southeast home. Hard to argue with that fact.

Do you still get to ride? I still get to ride, but my days of competing are over. However, I do race mountain bikes competitively and proud to say that I won last year’s Charlotte MTB series in the expert class. Must be all the pollution from Cali and Jersey, when I got here I was breathing like Lance Armstrong.

You lived in California, New Jersey and now North Carolina. Where do you like it the best? By far I prefer North Carolina. The people are friendly, the state is beautiful and it is an awesome place to raise a family. I do miss all of my Jersey boys and family though.

Any chance of seeing you at Raceway Park racing again?

You will absolutely see me at Raceway Park again. After all these years it is still my favorite track and I consider the people there like part of my extended family. Don’t tell the AMA, but I am trying to shoehorn Kyle Bush’s NASCAR engine into a 450 frame. Can you say holeshot money…

Any closing words? Thanks for your time and get better Tommy!
