32nd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16 Elijah asked a widow for a cup of water and a piece of bread. She told him she was almost out of flour, and that she and her son would soon starve. Elijah told her not to be afraid, as God had told him the jar of flour would not go empty. So she did as he had asked and prepared bread from the last of her flour. As God had said, her jar did not go empty, and she and her son had plenty to eat. Second Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28 The high priests entered the sanctuary each year and offered a sacrifice, but not a sacrifice of their own blood. Just as people die once and are judged, Christ was offered up once for the sins of many. Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 Jesus expressed disgust over the hypocrisy of some of the scribes for wanting special treatment from the people. He watched the wealthy put large contributions into the collection box, but explained that what they gave was surplus wealth, and not a real sacrifice. He told them the biggest donation was a small amount from a widow, because she had given up the only money that she had to live on. SAINT ELIZABETH-ST. COURAGE IN RED My dear friends in Jesus Christ,

I write to invite you to an Ecumenical Evening Prayer Service on Tuesday, November 27th at 7 PM at St. Brigid Church in Peapack. The special focus of our prayer will be for current day Christian martyrs; other Christians around the world who are being persecuted for their belief in Jesus Christ. Each day we hear of increased violence perpetuated against our fellow Christians. Many have fled their native lands because of religious persecution. Others were not so fortunate.

In recent weeks, our parish hosted Lord David Alton, a member of the House of Lords in Great Britain and Marcela Szymanski, UN and EU Liaison Officer for Aid to the Church in Need, who spoke about the tragedies worldwide and the efforts being done to assist persecuted Christians. Their intent was to bring a greater awareness to the suffering and the genocide of Christians, and the call for Religious Freedom. They challenged those present to be a part of this effort through prayer and action.

In recent years, a Catholic charity under the guidance of Pope Francis called Aid to the Church in Need, started an initiative called Courage in Red. The week of November 24 has been designated as a week of action both on a personal and on a community level. One of the initiatives they started was to get places of worship to light up in red and to have prayer vigils for our persecuted sisters and brothers.

Last year their efforts saw both the London Eye as well as Westminster Cathedral shining in red to bring about an awareness to the plight of Christians. According to our recent visitors, London will again be seen in RED as well as other places throughout the world. It would be wonderful if our parish could be a part of this effort as a way to support our less fortunate brethren who are unable to practice their Christian faith.

Red candles will be available in the back of the Church. All donations from the sale of the candles will go to the Aid to the Church in Need.

Please know of my continued prayers for you and for all victims of persecution. In Christ Jesus our Lord, Rev. Msgr. Edward C. Puleo, Pastor

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Week 15 “This is another week of miracles. I am able to hear my mother’s voice for the first time! All of the fluid that surrounds me helps to carry the sound of her voice, her

heartbeat and even her stomach, to me. I can hear some things outside the womb--- like Daddy’s voice, too! My brain is not yet mature enough to interpret it all, but it sure is interesting. I am growing some hair and eyebrows and even growing tiny little hairs called ‘lanugo’ all over my body that helps me to maintain my body temperature. Don’t worry; by the time I am born, most of that hair will have disappeared! Please keep praying for me.”

PRAYER FOR ALL HUMAN LIFE God of infinite love,

open wide our hearts and minds that we might be worthy advocates for the voiceless and vulnerable.

Give us the courage of will to remain vigilant to the unborn.

The generosity of heart to offer support to the sick.

The constant desire to be present to the elderly.

The abundance of love to be committed to the disabled.

The perseverance to seek and find the lost and forgotten.

Lord and Giver of life, in your love and mercy, keep us safe in your care as we strive to offer comfort to others in your name.

May we always keep before us the challenge to recognize the face of Jesus in all those we meet.

Through Christ Our Lord, Amen. ~ by Reverend John G. Hillier, October 1, 2013

Remember to pray for the souls in purgatory: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let

perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the

mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

WORLD DAY of the POOR “This poor one cried out and the LORD heard, and from all is distress he saved him.” --Psalms 34:7 The second World Day of the Poor will be observed on Sunday, November 18, 2018. In his apostolic letter to close the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis suggested the Catholic Church set aside one day each year when communities can “reflect on how poverty is at the very heart of the Gospel.” He designated this day as the World Day of the Poor. As we prepare for Thanksgiving and share our gratitude to God, may we remember those less fortunate.

THE GIVING TREE The parish Giving Tree will be available in both Churches November 17-18. Tags adorn each tree with gifts needed to assist those in need. This year the gifts will be given to those in need in our area and Perth Amboy, the Pregnancy Aid and Information Center, students of Matheny. Gifts may be wrapped and returned to Church on

December 8th and 9th. It is not necessary to wrap the diapers and formula. Thank you for your generous outpouring to those in need this Advent as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ our Lord.
