Salina Journal, March 13, 1968. Page 1. Phillipsburg - Dan L. Daily, 15, Phillipsburg, was killed Tuesday when his car ran off a Phillips County road and overturned south of Kirwin. Two passengers, Tim Ellenberger and Pat Johnson, were injured but not seriously. Daniel is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Daily, Phillipsburg; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Burrage, Phoenix, Ariz., and a grandmother, Mrs. Henry L. Rolfsmeyer, Holdrege, Neb. He was born May 6, 1952, at Russell and was a sophomore at Eastern Heights high school in Agra. He was a baseball player. The funeral will be at 10 am Friday at the Olliff-Boeve chapel, Phillipsburg, the Rev. Robert Sheagley officiating. Relatives of the family live in Salina. Friends may call at the chapel from 9 to 9:50am Friday. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Salina at 4pm Friday, the Rev. David Cunningham, officiating.

Salina Journal, December 21, 1969. Page 4. Phillipsburg - An 18 year old Phillipsburg youth was killed in a 2 car accident west of Phillipsburg Friday. One of the injured is in critical condition. Gary Allen Colby , driver of one of the cars, died at the scene. Robert L. Jensen, 17, Glade, was in Gary’’s car and suffered minor injuries and did not seek medical attention. Officers said both cars were headed west on US-36. The Colby car was in the lead. A second vehicle, not involved in the accident, was behind the Colby car, and the Brehner vehicle was in the rear. Breiner was attempting to pass the middle vehicle when Gary started to make a left turn, the Highway Patrol said. The funeral for Gary Colby will be at 2pm Monday at the Olliff-Boeve chapel, Phillipsburg, the Rev. Charles Jones officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Colby, Phillipsburg; 4 brothers, Donald, with the army in Vietnam; Larry, McCook, Neb., and Howard and Daryl of the home, and 2 sisters, Dorothy and Marlene of the home.

Salina Journal, August 21, 1970, Page 9. Hays - Kenneth Wente, 41, Hill City, seriously injured in a truck crash 6 miles east of here on 1-70 late Tuesday, is holding his own” Friday in the St. Anthony hospital intensive care unit. Hospital officials said his condition was “not good”. Wente was driver of a truck loaded with rabbits headed for the Kansas Food Products processing plant at Hill City. He suffered burns over 75 percent of his body. A passenger, Lee H. Smith, 18, Phillipsburg, died Wednesday of injuries. Authorities said Wente apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The westbound truck careened into the median, hit a guard rail, dropped between 2 underpass bridges onto a county road and burst into flames. The funeral for Mr. Smith will be at 10 am Monday at the Olliff-Boeve mortuary, Phillipsburg, the Rev. Delbert Tetrick officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery near Phillipsburg. The family suggests memorials to the Phillipsburg Church of God. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 20, 1951, at Bearden, Ark. He came to Phillipsburg as a small child and attended Phillisburg schools. He was a 1970 graduate of Phillipsburg High School, where he had been active in athletics, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Leo Club. He was a member of the Church of God. He was a summer employee of Kansas Food Products. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Smith, a brother, Vernon, and 5 sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Bates, Hill City; Mary Ann, Detroit Mich., and Virginia, Hazel and Sandra all of the home.

The funeral for Robert A. McClellan, 22, Phillipsburg, will be at 10 am Friday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel here, the Rev. Franklin Rothfuss officiating. Mr. McClellan, a May graduate of Fort Hays State college, died Tuesday when the State Highway department tractor he was driving overturned in a ditch south of Norton. He was born Feb. 21, 1952, in Phillips County. He was under contract to teach English and journalism at the Baldwin City High School this fall. Surviving are the widow, Beverly, of the home; his mother, Mrs. Edna McKown; stepfather, A.R. McKown; brother, James, and 3 sisters, Sherry and Peggy McClellan, all of Phillipsburg, and Judy Miller, Lakeview, Iowa. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg. Memorials have been established to Fort Hays State and the Phillipsburg Recreation commission’s Little League baseball program. Friends may call at the chapel.

He was born June 8, 1952 at Phillipsburg. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Erma Jensen, Kirwin; 4 brothers, Walter and Wallace Jensen, both of Oberlin, Larry Jensen, Hutchinson, and Jerry Jensen, Garnett; and a grandmother, Mrs. Edna Morton, Phillipsburg. Wanda Fay Owen, 38, 406 S. Ninth St., died Monday, Dec 17, 1990, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Owen was born Wanda Fay Faubion on Aug. 2, 1952 at Phillipsburg and had been a Salina resident since 1986. She was a licensed practical nurse at Kenwood View Nursing Home and was in charge of medical records. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg. Survivors include her husband, Joel M. of the home; a son, Devin Runyon of Salina; two daughters, Jenele Serocki and Tamara Runyon, both of Salina; a brother, Paul Faubion of Salina; and two sisters, Saundra Foe of Salina and Julie Faubion of Westminister, Colo. The funeral will be at 9am Wednesday at the Gelsendorf-Rush Smith Funeral home, the Rev. Stephen Letourneau officiating. Burial will be at 1:30pm, Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg. He was a truck driver and worked for Wesco in Norton. Survivors include a son, Tony of McPherson; a stepson, Robert Cotton of Fallon, Nev.; his mother, Maxine Brown of Phillipsburg; three brothers, Charles and Steve, both of Phillipsburg, and Dennis of Norton; a sister, Ruth Brown of Norton. James LeRoy Schneider, son of John Edwin and Ethel (Olson) Schneider, was born June 1, 1952 in Hutchinson and passed away Friday, Nov. 28th, 2008 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 56. After high school, Jim spent time in the Army Reserves in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He later worked as an oil rigger for Red Tiger Drilling Company in Oklahoma. Jim enjoyed riding his Harley and was associated with several motorcycle associations. He also enjoyed motorcycles and vehicles in his spare time. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. Jim was preceded in death by his father, John. Survivors include his mother Ethel Schneider of Phillipsburg; son Ronald Charles Schneider of Hays; two brothers: Victor Randolph of Abilene and John Randolph of Joplin, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 6th at 2 pm in the Olliff –Boeve Memorial Chapel with Pastor Mark Gervais officiating. The congregation sang “Just As I Am” accompanied by pianist Tim Ito. Taped selections included: “Danny Boy” and “Trouble in Mind”. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.

Cathy Sue Colby, age 57, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2010 at her home in Ulysses, Kan-sas. She was born September 30, 1952 in Smith Center, Kansas, the daughter of Dave and Helen “Chris” (Paulsen) Colby. Cathy attended the Phillipsburg, Kansas school system graduating with the Phillipsburg High School class of 1970. She continued her education obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree at Fort Hays State University in Special Education-Teaching. Later on in life she completed her Master’s De-gree through Friend’s University. Ms. Colby devoted her life to teaching children in various school systems throughout Kansas. She took pride in her work and educational achievements. Cathy was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary in Russell, Kansas. Survivors include two brothers, David of Coffeyville, Kansas, Charles of Norton, Kansas; two sisters, Karen Eihausen of Aurora, Colorado and Mary Stanton of Logan, Kansas. Ms. Colby is preceded in death by her father and mother.

TULSA, Okla. -- Barbara Sue Leader, 58, of Tulsa, formerly of Kirwin, Kan., died Friday, March 5, 2010. She was born Feb. 6, 1952, in Smith Center, Kan., to Lawrence and Vala (Lamont) DeBey. Survivors include her sons, Jeremy, of Hawthorne, Calif., and Andrew, of Tulsa; brother, Mike DeBey; and sisters, Carol Church and Evelyn Dukes. Cremation was planned. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, in Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, in care of the chapel. Second obituary--Barbara Sue Leader, former Kirwin area resident, was born February 6, 1952, in Smith Center, Kansas, to Lawrence and Vala (Lamont) DeBey. She passed away on March 5, 2010, at the Hill Crest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 58. Barbara made her home in Jenks, Oklahoma, and worked in the Tax Accounting field. Her parents, lawrence and Vala DeBey, preceded her in death. Survivors include her sons, Jeremy of Hawthorne, California, and Andrew of Tulsa, Oklahoma; brother, Michael DeBey; and two sisters, Carol Church and Evelyn Dukes. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

M. E. “Mel” White, age 59, of Loma, CO, passed on July 7, 2011. He was born on January 22, 1952 in Smith Center, Ks to Orel E. and Dorothy V. (Portenier) White. He is survived by his partner, JoAnn Gutierrez; a daughter, Misha of Arvada, CO; his sons, Shawn David of Oneonta, NY and Eric of Parker, CO; his daughter-in-law, Tanessa and granddaughters, Finola and Iris; his sisters, Barbara Callaway (Frank) of Pratt, KS and Sandra Killfoil (Jerry) of Newton, KS and many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding him in death are his parents; eldest sister, Carolyn Keirnes, and two infant brothers, Robert and Melvin. Mel was a member of the Eagles and before his retirement, he held positions as director of the Western Slope Billiard Congress of America, state director of Aegon Insurance (Kansas , Oklahoma and Colorado), state sales director of Combine Insurance (Kansas and Iowa). He enjoyed camping and the outdoors. He was a loving partner, father, son, brother, and compassionate friend to many. A memorial fund in Mel’s name to support his daughter, Misha White’s education has been established at Colorama Credit Union. WICHITA, KS - Donald Allen Kern was taken into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Feb-ruary 29, 2016 in Wichita, KS after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on January 7, 1952 to Elwin and Jeanne (Humphries) Kern in Springfield, MO. After graduating from Phillips-burg High School in 1970 Don proudly served his country in the United States Air Force being stationed in England. After Don"s discharge from the Air Force he was a valued employee as a tech support representative for both Wang and Commerce Clearing House in Wichita, KS until his retirement three years ago. On May 23, 1981 Don married Suzan Marie Hooper in Phillips-burg, KS. Don was a loving son to both his and Suzie"s parents." And was a loving and sup-porting husband to his wife Suzie both in their marriage and as she fought and lost her battle to cancer in 2010. Don and Suzie both knew Christ as their savior and their families take great comfort that they are back together and in the loving arms of their heavenly father. Don was preceded in death by his wife Suzie, his mother Jeanne, his brother Hugh. He is survived by his father Elwin Kern of Smith Center; brother Daniel of Searcy, AR; his sister Carol of Las Ve-gas, NV; mother in law Helen Hooper of Smith Center; sister in law Shari Hooper of Wichita, KS; sister in law and husband Dave and Sheila Germeroth of Denver, CO. Celebration of life service will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the Evangelical Free Church in Smith Center. Burial will follow with military honors in the Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center. The family has requested in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the American Cancer So-ciety and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Beverly J. Wiehl, 64, of Smith Center, passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2016, in Osborne. She was born Jan. 26, 1952 in Topeka to Marion and Bernadette (Martin) Fabin Beverly's youth was spent in Phillipsburg, Kansas. She attended the Lutheran church, participated for many years in 4H, and excelled in school at all levels. She was a member of the National Honor Society, was student council and class Vice President and won the Outstanding Teenager award. Among her participation in many clubs and school activities, she especially enjoyed band, choir and Madrigals. Beverly graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1974. Beverly enjoyed a happy albeit brief marriage to her high school sweet heart, Bob McClellan. Their marriage ended with his early and tragic death .Beverly and Bryce were married in 1978, and she joined his large and happy family. Beverly taught English and German for many years in Osborne and Smith Center. She also was the Smith Center High School librarian at the end of her public service, in 2004. She retired after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Beverly and Bryce raised their beloved boys, John and Joe, with great pride and affection. She will always be remembered as a dear and loyal friend, happy in-law, loving wife, and mother. Beverly was a great fan of baking on Sundays, mystery novels, cats, Masterpiece Theater, chocolate, and BBC comedies. There was little she enjoyed more than a good book. Survivors: husband, Bryce, of Smith Center; sons, John, of Cleveland, and Joe and fiancé Leah Kuhlmann, of Smith Center; and a brother, Tom (Peggy) Fabin, of Phillipsburg. Celebration of Life services will be at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at the American Lutheran Church, Smith Center, Ks. There will be no public visitation. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS.

It is with sadness that we tell you of the passing of our classmate, Junior Lesher.

The following was posted on Facebook by his sister-in-law, Ralene: "Today I lost my brother-in-law Jr. Alzheimer’s has taken him from this earth, but we rejoice knowing he is in heaven. I have so many cherished memories that I will never forget. He first touched my heart when I was a teen struggling to find myself. His words guided me through a difficult time and I will be forever grateful. Dana and Jr. were a married couple, but more importantly they were best friends. Dana’s strength to get through this came from God, and He will help her now. We will miss you Jr."

This was posted by his other sister in law, Janine: "Tonight my brother-in-law Junior Lesher went to be with the Lord. Please keep my sister Dana and her family in your prayers for comfort and peace. We have so many wonderful memories of Junior!! He loved the Lord and his family deeply, he had a great sense of humor,(I can still see his huge smile) he was so tenderhearted and a great provider for his family. He will be missed so much!!!

Phillipsburg resident, Barbara Ann Pfannenstiel, passed away Sept. 15, 2018 at her home in Phillipsburg at the age of 65. She was born Sept. 29, 1952 in Phillipsburg, the daughter of Leonard & Maxine (Lemon) Elliott. Survivors include her husband Greg of the home, 2 stepsons: Brandon Pfannenstiel of Oceanside, CA & Shane Pfannenstiel of Kansas City, KS; 2 stepdaughters: Sabrina Bader of Hill City, KS and Sarah Trogden of Lawrence, KS; her brother William Elliott of Glade, KS; her sister, Brenda McClure of Stockton, KS; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Funeral services will be held Wed. Sept. 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Church of God with Pastor Monte Brunner officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Phillipsburg resident Daniel D. Price was born July 1, 1952 in St. Francis, KS to Harry and Neva (Bower)

Price. He passed away peacefully on May 25, 2020 with his wife by his side at the age of 67.

Dan grew up on a ranch and at the age of 11 he and his family moved to Phillipsburg, KS. He attended school

there and graduated in 1970. One day after graduating he entered into the US Navy. While serving on a ship

in Boston, MA he met his wife Mary Dunlap where they were married on May 4, 1973. He was honorably

discharged from the Navy on May 25, 1974.

Although he had plans to go back to school in Boston, while visiting in Phillipsburg, he got a job offer to work

at the refinery in Phillipsburg. So after a quick trip to Boston to get their belongings they moved back to

Phillipsburg. While there he was proud to serve on the city council. In 1982 when the refinery closed down

he, his wife and son moved to Boston, MA. During this time Dan went back to school and earned his

Journeyman and Master Electrician License. He enjoyed working as a union electrician. In 2006 he moved

back to Phillipsburg and worked for Tamko Building Products until he retired in 2017.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Harry and Neva; younger sister Carol Haas; and an infant brother

Darrel.

He is survived by his wife Mary and son Danny of West Bridgewater, MA; daughter Ashley Kertis of Wisconsin

Rapids, WI; and 2 sisters Cheryl Doggett of Denver, CO and Donna Ellis of Grenada, MS.

Cremation was planned. A private family memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2020 in the

Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. The service will be

streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel FaceBook page.

Friends may sign the book Thursday at the funeral chapel from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
