ST. CECILIA CHURCH Sunday

Vigil 5:00pm (Saturday) 6:30am, 8:00am, 9:30am, 11:00am

Monday through Friday 6:30 and 8:30 am

Saturday 8:30 am

First Reading ~ Book of Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31

When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize. She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. She obtains wool and flax and works with loving hands. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her fingers ply the spindle. She reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her a reward for her labors, and let her works praise her at the city gates.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Holy Gospel ~ Matthew 25:14-15, 19-21

Jesus told his disciples this parable: "A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his posses-sions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one--to each according to his abil-ity. Then he went away.

"After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the addition-al five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibili-ties. Come, share your master's joy.'"

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Second Reading First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians 5:1-6

Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sis-ters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When people are saying, "Peace and security," then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of the night or of darkness. There-fore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 15, 2020

FOCUS: God empowers us to participate in his work to bring about good in the world.

We are called to participate in God’s work to multi-ply goodness in our world, and God gives us all we need for this work. Especially in the Eucharist, we receive God’s grace and strength that we, too, may be faithful in small matters and great responsibilities. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The first reading from Proverbs declares a worthy wife as having value far beyond pearls. She is described as bringing goodness, being entrusted with her husband’s heart, hard-working, and in fear of the Lord. Paul tells the Thessalonians that they are children of the light and children of the day, and thus, disaster will not befall them when the day of the Lord comes. In the Gos-pel, Jesus tells a parable of the faithful servant who multiplies the talents given him by his master. REFLECTION: Discipleship isn’t a holding back for fear of making a mistake, or looking like a fool. Judging from today’s parable, it requires a spirit of risk and boldness, sometimes in big matters, but mostly in small daily occurrences. Whatever the “risky business” we use in our service of the Lord, we are encouraged in today’s parable by a Master who trusts his servants to “give it a try” – so that when he returns we will hear him call us “good and faithful servants.” So we ask ourselves:

Do I treat my faith as something fragile, keeping it close and protected as if it will break if brought out into the open?

In my daily life, how venturesome before others am I with my faith?

If you could spare about 20 minutes after the daily Masses and after the Sat-urday and Sunday Masses, and including funer-als, please contact the rectory at 215-725-1240 or see the coordinator after Mass.

The Giving Tree will be in the front of church by Thanksgiving Day. Every year we provide gifts of love that respond to the practical needs of those less fortunate through-out the City of Philadelphia. We encourage you to choose a tag from the tree and purchase the item listed. We will collect the gifts the weekend of December 12-13. Due to COVID-19 precautions, we are doing things a little different this year. Riley and Sons Moving has generously donated a truck to collect and sort the gifts. The truck will be in the church parking lot the weekend of December 12-13. We are asking that you bring the gifts to the truck and NOT place them under the tree. Items should be UNWRAPPED AND UNBAGGED with only the tag attached to each item (no shopping bags, no gift bags or envelopes). And, we ask that you please do not bring gifts any other weekend or day. Gifts will be delivered to - - - -
